Morgan James. A little known vocalist best known for her work with Postmodern Jukebox. Very precise and disciplined singer, with a phenomenal belt. Nowhere near as famous as she deserves to be, although her own material leaves a bit to be desired.

Her cover of Dream On is probably her best known:

but God I love her take on Take Me To Church:

Another great singer not mentioned yet

Probably unnoticed because he is so tied into the group harmonies of GSN andY and not so much as an individual singer

But David Crosby was always a great singer in those days first in The Byrds then the above group and then the sublime solo album If I Could Only remember My Own Name

And not a great deal since till a few years ago when he started making some pretty good records with of things his voice largely intact

Just listening to his new record he could be the greatest 80 year old singer😄

Ever

Its much easier to nominate / isolate someone with demonstrable vocal range thankfully ; as there is far too many other options who craft a song well

To be even handed for genders sake  ; Jay Black

Mind went straight to Enrico Caruso ; WW1 barely had phonographs :/

I've been getting back into Jay and the American again through youtube clips for about the last year - yep! one of the best voices in pop music.

Been looking for a best of on vinyl for some time .

A great thread, so many great voices.

I am going to nominate “ Dominique fils- Aime”. Her voice is sublime. To top that off her album recordings are some of the best SQ I have heard.

Her timing and emotion is also flawless. I can name wonderful runners up but will keep it simple with Natalie Cole in particular her “unforgettable” album. Gets me every time.

cheers,

Tony

For me it's Karen Carpenter.  "Voice Of The Heart," released just after she died is a standout.

Male vocal is Jimmy Little.   "Messenger" is a stellar masterpiece!  Kudos to Brendan Gallagher for his work getting that project to happen.  I had the pleasure to interview Jimmy many years back - an absolute gentleman that lived music to the core of his soul.  He didn't care who you were, where you come from, your history.   Such a beautiful man.

Although it doesn't get a roll at home very often now days i couldn't possibly go past some of Mike Pattons work with Mr Bungle. So much more than vocals, he uses his voice as an instrument.

For me, it's out of Jackie Wilson or Carl White of The Rivingtons. Man those guys had some range - true vocal gymnasts. Not sure too many even remember Carl White, such is the injustice of the universe.

Wilson takes the first verse here. Unbelievable.

This is the B-side to one of the tracks The Trashmen ripped off for Surfin' Bird. Carl White lets it rip from the moment the track starts.

The Platters deserved to be on the list too.

Absolutely.  Tony Williams is a master.
