Reds that drink above the price

Featured Replies

We had dinner at "The Haus" in Hahndorf tonight.

On a previous visit, they introduced us to Mike Press shiraz. We loved it, but couldn't find it at any of the local bottle shops. When it won some award as the best SA shiraz, we gave up - just can't be found at any price whereas it was a budget wine on release.

Anyway, tonight we had Maxwell's "Silver Hammer" shiraz and it was superb. I've ordered a case as it seems a real bargain at $18 per bottle. I usually prefer to buy wines individually but previous ones that have convinced me to buy by the case have included Claymore's Dark Side of the Moon, Mr Riggs The Gaffer and Step Road shiraz.

The music connotation is a bonus if you like that sort of thing (must admit that I do :) ) - IMHO this is an outstanding wine in its own right.

Well I've tried a few of the reds recommended so far

Craftsman Shiraz. $13.50 good value drinkable but nothing special

Duck duck goose Shiraz $18.50 good drinkable could drink regularly at this price But again not special

Dark side of the moon Shiraz $26 a good Shiraz that is delightful to drink , it is a little thin compare to a full bodied load Shiraz , but there are many times when drinking any easy red is very enjoyable. The start of a friendship is likely

Here are my picks

Tahbilk Shiraz ($15 - $19)

Zema Estate Shiraz ($18 - $23)

Brand"s Laira Shiraz ($16 - $20)

Best's Great Western Cabernet ($30)

Yalumba "the cigar" Cabernet ($22 - $25)

Wynns Cabernet Shiraz Merlot ($15 - $19)

and finally when funds are low, Yalumba Y Series Cabernet, Vermentino or Pinot Grigio ($10 - $14)

I've had a couple of a Tahbilk's lately: last night a 2004 Shiraz, drinking very well. Week before was a mid 90s Shiraz, very nice but maybe a couple of years past its best. Must one day get a bottle of that wine they make from the really old vines (although that may be pushing the price qualification of this thread!).

Of course I agree with the Zema comment, great priced great wine.

Haven't had Brand's Laira or Bests for years but I remember them as very nice.

Good taste for reasonable priced wines there Lem.

Damn, we like our Shiraz on SNA..... as do I :D...just about anything from Heathcote..anyway

The best red I have had in living memory is Huntington Estate 2006 SPECIAL RESERVE CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Central Victorian wines are great and plenty out there that won't break the bank.

Neil McGuigan Signature Shiraz V, 2009 Barossa Valley/Eden Valley

It was one of those wines when you finish it, you feel a sudden disappointment knowing there aren't any more in the cellar. :(

+1 for Torzi Matthews Shist Rock shiraz - excellent wine for the price.

Thorn-Clarke Shotfire Quartage 2010 - great wine

Bleasdale "Mulberry Tree " Cab Sav.

$15 at Dan's.

You can either consume it now or put some away for a few years.

Dan's currently has a 2007 cellar release... i recently bought a bottle of Taylor's 2007 Clare Valley Shiraz and only just drank it -- holy ***: it''s damn good and only $17!!! Rushed back to buy a dozen, only to find they are all sold ay my 2 local Dan's, and replaced by the Cab Sav -- sadly not nearly as good.

If you happen to find any of the shiraz at your local Dan's, buy them all!

p.s. Still yet to find the Torzi Matthews in stock :-(

The shiraz is available again. I'm considering buying a case.

Great Thread.

Anyone would think it's winter with all the shiraz guzzling going on.

How about some for sunny climes -

Ninth Island Pinot Noir - 15.60 -second label of Pipers Brook from Tassie.  Fights above it's price for sure.

Palliser Estate PN -17 bucks - New Zealander but don't hold that against it.

Going up in price but getting world class

Bay of Fires - PN - 33

Port Phillip Estate - 30 odd

and my fav at present

By Farr - Farrside PN - i have been getting this at $45 but that no longer happening - :(

Yes, the By Farr PNs and shiraz for that matter, are very good.

Cool-climate shiraz is drinkable any time of year.

Wyndham Estate Bin 555 Shiraz. Usually under $10 and consistently impresses me.

The Bin 888 Cab Merlot is also fantastic - one of my favourites.

Cape Mentelle Trinders Cab Merlot 2011 is also very, very good at about $25ea

Two of my $15 favourites:

Mount Langi Ghiran Billi Billi Shiraz and St hallett's Faith Shiraz.

When it's above 30 degrees - I tend to reach for something else.

I just noticed this thread and thought I'd chime in with a few thoughts.

Back in the late 80's / early 90's my wife and I owned a restaurant on the Sunshne Coast and were lucky enough to source our wines and spirits from a really switched on local wholesaler.

Just prior to us selling in 1993, our supplier rang me up to wish us well (we were good customers and got on really well with them) as they had a massive amount of broken dozen lots they wanted to offload for a pretty nice price.

Well, with an offer like that how could I refuse. Without wanting to sound too pretentious, can I give you an idea of some of the gems they supplied. They were priced well under their normal cost so we went ballistic knowing that the new restaurant buyer would be slugged with the additional alcohol licence fees due to a timing difference. Most of these were shiraz / cab Sauv's with a few other blends thrown in along with a handful of Chardy's for Mrs Boss.

Prices ranged from $5.00 to $15 for the Wolf Blass with most around $7 to $8. Incredible!!!

Needless to say, we were drinking fantastic wines for many years to come.

These days, I prefer to look for value and find great wines from these producers:

Wirra Wirra - Church Block

Tatachilla Reserve Shiraz - is a cracker

Tatachilla Partners Cab Shiraz is no slouch either

Annie's Lane - Shiraz

Pepper Tree Cab Sauv

Pepperjack Cab Sauv

Hardy's Oomoo Shiraz

Waterwheel Memsie Shiraz - $10

Water Wheel Shiraz - $15 was better

Pirramimma Stock's Hill Shiraz - $17

Katnook Estate - Founder's Block Cab Sauv

Kilikanoon - Kavel's Flock Shiraz

Mount Langi Ghiran - Billi Billi - brilliant for the money but would love to try one of their 90's Langi Shiraz if they are still available.

There are also so many other excellent wines that we make in this great country of ours that it is no wonder they often rate so highly overseas. I still believe we can hold our own very well compared to so many overseas producers.
