hired goon Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 G'day, Spins du jour: Jethro Tull - "Thick As A Brick" -- a weird one, this, as it starts out as a pretty folk tune (as heard on FM radio countless times lo these many years) and gradually morphs into a 40 minute monster of progressive rock, jazz and classical, all set to stream of consciousness lyrics about English provincialism and the class system and dumbing down society (or so I dare to interpret). I had the album as a lad and truly, truly miss the fold-out newspaper that was part of the packaging. Pet Shop Boys - "Concrete" -- in which Neil & Chris release a double live CD, eschewing most of their big hits in favour of some of the more esoteric releases. Includes tracks from their musical and soundtrack work, and even getting Robbie Williams to croon on one track. Interesting stuff for a long-time Pet Shop Boys fanbois such as moi. The White Stripes - "Icky Thump (Steve Hoffman vinyl master)" -- I heard the commercial CD release of "Icky Thump" and was not impressed with the sonics. As per usual, mastered way too hot and it hurt my ears. This is a rip of the US vinyl release that was mastered by legend Steve Hoffman, and sounds way better IMHO -- more dynamic and punchier. One day I'd like to compare the wave files of this against the commercial CD to see the difference in how these are mixed. Oh, and the music is not too bad either, if yer into the Jack'n'Meg stuff. Not as good as "Elephant", but a decent enough listen. --Geoff 1

cheekyboy Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Sure is , but the bloody compilation does not have 'Shilo' on it........used to be my favourite numerous decades ago.[/b] You should be still able to pick up Diamond's "The Greatest Hits 1966 - 1992" which includes "Shilo". There's 37 tracks with several tracks recorded live and is a good compilation of his hit songs. "Shilo" was originally recorded on "Just For You" and then again on "Velvet Gloves & Spit" and are on my wish list if ever I can find a good vinyl copy. Cheers, Keith
Grumpy Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 I was very privileged to be at his concert at the Sydney Cricket Ground a year or so after HAN was released. He basically did the whole HAN show. We were on the grass with our picnic rug around 10 rows from the front with our esky full of seafood and beverages. They just dont do concerts like that any more. Will have to go and hunt up a fresh copy of the album................mine died many years ago.[/b] I talked a couple of weeks ago about this old second hand shop that had 100's of LP's and I came across at least 2 copies of HAN; condition not known! Might check them out, DAMM this LP talk. 1

Phil G Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 HiI'm just trying to cover up for a double post by reporting that I'm currently playing Bobby Darin's greatest hits Cheers Mick[/b] Wow, I was listening to that this arvo as well. I love the song "Mack the Knife". Certainly not something I listen to often, but just gave it a spin for fun. I've been playing plenty of Cowboy Junkies (thanks Tony C) and Lizz Wright. There is something mighty special about a sultry female vocal. Also thanks to HG's recommendation, a couple of Emiliana Torrini's discs.

On to Lizz Wright - she does a great version of Diana Krall's 'narrow daylight' - I play them both back to back & still can't decide which I like best Cheers Mick 1
mickj1 Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Hi Had some old friends over for lunch & drinks today (but we would not be convicted by a jury of our peers..) - played Joe Cocker's version of 'into the mystic', the new Ry Cooder CD, Beggars, Sara K (so they could hear what SACD sounds like), Dylan's modern times, Tommy Emmanuel, Jim Hall, Jerry lee Lewis (last man standing), Doug Kershaw, Joe Pass, Dusty Springfield among others. These are some seriously old jazz/rocker friends I'm talking about! Had an interesting conversation/listen to the differences between Cajun and Zydeco - they both play accordian - one's white & one's black - the cajuns only play two keys (C, D and 4 chords - GC, AD - a bit like AC/DC really!) whereas zydeco is mostly 12 bar blues. We ended up with a competition on the top ten records of all time - varied responses included: Eagles, Desire, Highway 61 revisited, Gram Parsons, Donald Fagen's nightfly, Beggars Banquet, Elvis' golden records, Jimmy Smith Home Cookin', Bill Evans' undercurrent - but all agreed that there shouldn't be any post- Tupelo Honey Van Morrison - couldn't fault their taste really, but now I think I need to go to bed early! Cheers Mick 1

Gutty Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 And this is where i start to not fit in with the true audiophiles so well... Dire Straits - Brothers in arms.(SACD) Dianna Krall - When I Look in Your Eyes.(DVD-A) CD: Chris Cornell - Carry on Clutch - From Beale street to oblivian Rage against the machine - Live and Rare(recently found this at JB after chasing it online for about a year ) Mike Oldfiled - Tubular bells(loved it as a youngster but never bought, then spotted at JB recently), so it too has been getting a bit of a work out. And should have the new Velvet Revolver - Libertad, aswell as the older self titled Clutch show up today, so those also likely to get a bit of a work out over the next few days.
Guest Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Hi Mark,Dead can dance have been a favourite of mine and saw a doco the other month on Lisa Gerrard... hmmm that music is familiar...! What's it like? Well as a huge Gerrard/DCD fan I think Im a little biased, and I have to say the last track on the album is one of my personal favs of all time. I found the album a little too familiar when I first got it, but got into it after peated listening. I have to say tho' - I dont feel too bad for any CD I buy if there is one or two defining tracks on it, I feel my $25 was well spent to get that emotional connection.
