Hi All,   Some 70's German Electronica today:     JJ

  • Last nights retail therapy courtesy of Urban Records in Leederville

  • Aphex Twin - Classics - 1995, 2LP. Because I need a dose of techno nostalgia after last night... It was my birthday on Friday. I had a migraine for most of the day and had to cancel my plans. When S

@Ian McP your post regarding Rival Consols reminded he has a new album.  I just had a listen and it's got some really good tracks on it but the album just doesn't flow.  Kind of reminds me of Shlomo and his gaming/ soundtrack kind electronica, which always makes me feel as if he's applying for a job not making art? Shame really both are obviously very talented.

Is anyone else getting into the new Jon Hopkins album. The first track actually reminds me of the Dunkirk soundtrack by Hans Zimmer.

Hey Guys.  I'm pretty new to this thread.  I've been through the Vinyl, through the Metal and Rock CD's, now I'm moving into the Electronic, Techno, House and all things in between CD's.  I have quite a few Albums (cd), but mostly Compilations and DJ Mixes.   I changed jobs in 1996 and entered the Hospitality Industry, kitchen hand and cooked for ten years.  It was my introduction to House Music and Clubbing.  I worked in a gourmet pizza restaurant on the beach at it was a magical time.  The chefs were from Sydney and knew how, and where to party.  They took me to The Underground in Kings Cross on Thursday Nights, called 'High Times'.  The residents were Rob Milton and Mal Russel, but the main night for them was Saturday nights called 'Delicious'.  Thursday night was Hospitality Night, for all those who would be hosting everyone else over the weekend.  It was serious underground house music in what was previously The Kardomah Café, which hosted many bands including Screaming Tribesmen.  The resident's focus was Delicious, so Thursday saw a variety of DJ's hosting the night.  They played until 6 or 7am and I saw the day begin many times leaving there.

From there I went to Sasha & Digweed 'Northern Exposre', a few Festivals and Forest Doofs, Chemical Brothers in Sydney, Gatecrasher, and more will come back to me with time.  Some very blurry memories.

I started this morning with something I haven't played for years...

Speedy J 'Loudboxer' 2002 Mute Records, London. Made in EU.

1552604248_SpeedyJLoudboxer2002MuteRecordsLondon.MadeinEU..jpg.19517f9c67d962f201c6e13fda6fd6be.jpg

I saw this guy at Gatecrasher in Sydney at the Olympic Park, about 2003.  A dreadful night in a Police zone with about 5 dogs, it was sterile and uncomfortable.  It was one of the last commercial festivals for me.  Speedy J was the saving grace for the night.  I have 2 Cd's, picked up after that night.  This one gets going after the first, short lead in tracks, some nice thumping, driving, minimal, dubby techno mix.

Laurent Garnier 'Unreasonable Behaviour' 2000 F Communications, Paris. Creative Vibes, Aust.

One of my favourite Techno dudes.  I love his live sets, although I have never heard/seen him play, but this album is very interesting, more for the headphones/lounge than the dance floor, with a warning scribbled on the back that it 'contains different versions than the vinyl'.

 AllMusic Review by John Bush

More complex and idiosyncratic than his previous full-length works (and much less danceable as a consequence), Unreasonable Behaviour focuses on midtempo jams in the verge between evocative techno, electro-jazz, and even melancholy synth-pop. If 1997's 30 was his Chicago album, this one is definitely the Detroit installment, from the Motor City shoutouts at the end of the excellent "Communications from the Lab" to the future-imperfect electro track "Greed (Part 1+2)." Still, most of these tracks come closer to updated jazz-fusion than techno, with highlights like "City Sphere," "The Sound of the Big Babou," and "Forgotten Thoughts" driven by fuzzy, distorted melodies with dreamy synthesizer lines over the top and an emphasis on live(-sounding) drumming. He'd surely think twice before plugging any of these tracks into one of his DJ sets, but Unreasonable Behaviour is a solid fusion of jazz and techno.

Gary Clail-On-U Sound System 'Emotional Hooligan' 1991 Perfecto Records, UK. Made in Germany.

Just an amazing Album with a beautiful sound.  I loved 'Human Nature' when it came out and bought this CD.  One of my first ventures into Electronica.  Politically, socially and morally aware, it was an eye opener for me.  A lot of Metal is Politically, religiously and socially aware, but this Album made a lot of sense to me and my experience/observations of society.  I always thought this sort of Music WOULD change the world.

An Album that fits many moods.

Underworld 'Beaucoup Fish' 1998 JBO Ltd. V2 Music. Sony, Aust.

Underworld.  I've never seen these guys either, but their sets are superb and so is this Album.  I find their music very engaging and fun, they can really brew up a strorm.

Pitch Black 'Ape to Angel' 2004 pitchblack. Inertia, Aust.

Beautiful, dubby techno/trance from NZ.

Just received today.

Enigma - MCMXC A.D.

Jon Hopkins - Singularity

@Y B     Max, what is Jon Hopkins like?.   I had it on my last order, but had to drop it out and others,  as was spending way too much $$!!

Ghost Culture - wonderful electronic album from 2015. I see he has co-written a lot of Daniel Avery's new album with Daniel.

On my first listen I am slightly disappointed. While I think it's a good album, quite a few tracks felt too much like Immunity 2.0 but without the excitement of Immunity.

The SQ is good but I felt that it is not as good as Immunity, though I haven't played Immunity for comparison. However, it is a nice and quieter pressing. I went through 3 copies to get a copy of Immunity which is listenable.

I'll see if I like it a bit more after a few spins.

I have a couple of Theorem 12" on the way which will complete my Theorem records. Pulled out these and played through them, it's the best of it. series of 4.

left to right:

Shift [1998], Cinder [1998], Embed [1998], Fallout [1999]

theorem.jpg.2f4d5dac967904491dfaea3774cbaa9b.jpg

obvious highlight is Shift, but it's all very strong

umm actually no I think this is the best track, amazing

Interesting. I've been playing the album, hoping that it will "click" but I that hasn't quite happened yet.

I'll be the contrarian then.  I'm loving Singularity.  Vive la difference!  :thumb:  Give me a shout if you decide you want to sell it Max, but I hope you end up enjoying it as much as I am and keep it.

Derek Carr - Voyager EP [2017]

Pure and deep as. Irish guy, been putting out a lot of great techno and deep house since well nearly 20 years, I am chasing a lot of it!

This is super funky, detroit tinged, breaks/deep house.

Hi Andrew, I am glad that you are liking Singularity.

listened to Singularity again, seems even more disengaging... Put on Immunity afterward, everything feels just right, amazed how I still enjoyed it after n+++ times... Especially Sun Harmonics, never get tired of it... The SQ is certainly superior.

However, I will keep the records for now... I'll give it another few spins but in no hurry. :)

I am also quite disappointed with a few new releases lately, to name a few, City Calm Down (love their previous album In A Restless House), Jack Ladder & The Dreamlander, Arctic Monkeys... Something must have gone wrong in my head :)

Max.  I really like the City Calm Down and new Arctic Monkeys.  Arctic Monkeys is very different to their previous stuff - quite slow almost jazzy in parts.  Have not got the Jack Ladder yet, but am getting it next week. I really do like the new Underground Lovers album.
