I dont know if its been posted already but please dont use rat bait(i might have suggested it myself !), according to wildlife victoria (those who get their emails would be aware). when you poison a rat it takes 8-10 days to die. if a owl eats it in the mean time the owl dies too.

apparently there is a bit of an owl crisis going on with 4-5 calls a day they are getting for sick owls ! its a quick fix with an injection apparently but many probably die with people un aware.

so traps are best thing. or get yourself an owl  it seems :D

Good to know Al & makes sense as ive seen those poor buggers at the end if the line lying almost motionless in my greenhouse after a baiting session so personally I will not continue using these products (even the supposed "rapid death" varieties) as to me it just's seems such a bad way to go even though I get furious when they reek havoc on my crops.

Would love to have a few owl's though. That would be cool. Maybe some bats to (just for effect ?)

very very good point....

When I did my 1st kill, I did a pack of 5-6 mice in a matter of minutes with a cheap trap with some chicken bits....     I left them on the footpath round the back becuase it was too dark to walk to the bin!   The next morning they were all gone, and I don’t think they miraculously regain life and walked away.  ?

Our cat when she was younger brought in a very cute little mouse pink ears and nose. She was trying to play with it. Caused it no harm just was trying to paw it with it covering in a corner. I grabbed the mouse with dust pan and brush abd flung it over the fence ! Never saw again

we don’t have a rat problem. Never seen any

its more possums and have put a home for them out. We do get a visiting bat and an owl TB but not seen them in a while. Hope they’re ok !

we have pidgeons hatching 2nd batch of eggs on a nest full view of large window on our stair case ! They don’t seem to mind us walking past and looking at goings on !But that’s as close to rats we have here ! Thank goodness !

Ratty lives!  He is going crazy in the walls of the bedroom every night. Sounds like he is trying to knock through a few new rat doorways and doing a few reno’s to get the place up to his standards.

He no longer goes in the living room or kitchen, maybe all my barricades have worked but I think he just avoids it.

He will not go in the catch and release trap, the Nooski, normal traps or the electric (x2) rat toaster. I think he now avoids the ceiling and uses the walls to escape the death zone.

My respect of Ratty is diminishing, outright hostility has taken its place.

All our birds of pray can be at risk.

Something that is killing larger birds of pray like the Wedge-tailed Eagle is wild dog baits in the country areas.

I hate poisoning as It's at best, indiscriminate.

If you live in bushy areas anywhere on the East Coast, then the noise in your ceilings/walls may not be rats or mice, but small native carnivorous marsupials called, antechinus (pron: ante-kynus). These little furry-beasties can be very active at night and love to hide in wall cavities and roof-spaces. They look for all the world like small rats or large mice and are often mistaken for both.

Apparently, they periodically embark on mad sex frenzies and the males of the species will often go at it until they expire.

So those noises in the night might not be rats feeding, but lucky antechinus, screwing themselves to death.

I managed to put the Kibosh on two of my friends in the roof. More like Ratty Rat than Norwegian Rats.  It has been fairly quiet but new friends are here. Ate the bloody French Stick on Saturday. I have chicken wired every possible way in to the kitchen, heaven knows how they do it.

Fear not Soundsasme, no possums, bandicoots or other natives hanging out in the roof.

Think that chicken wire to be too open weave to use in this situation, maybe try some cheap stainless pot scourers to plug the holes.

No problem Soundbyte, it is all triple folded and stapled to the wall/floor/hole etc. Even dipped in lard my long nosed friends can’t get through.

The rats have started to turn up at our house again! We have caught 4 young ones in the back garden since Australia Day. It will be interesting to see how many we catch. No sign of the parents yet. Luckily they haven't been able to get into the house. Below is a mug shot of one of the little buggers.

While I’m not going to get on my high horse about animal cruelty, but I do find it funny that people get upset over a couch, and to then retaliate by killing the offender, which in all things equal, is not fair to the rat. It’s just an animal doing what it does. You can’t be angry at nature, pointless endeavor.

Humane catch, and re released out bush.

I feel the same way about snails, people are out there poisoning them when all they are doing is trying to get something to eat. Save the snails!

I have gone out of my way to be humane. I have bought catch and release traps. I have not resorted to poison. The rat destroyed a $1,000 couch, a $250 chair,  irreparably stained our dining table, chewed up the carpet, ate loads and loads of our food.  Personally I have to prevent that type of damage to my home.

My entire garden is built to feed birds and possums. It is full of nesting boxes which are used by birds and possums and rats. Hell there is a picture of a rat in one of the bird boxes on this page.

Our walls have been the scene of non stop rat midnight sex parties. We spent months and months being woken up every night .

I wasn't going to let myself get outsmarted by a rat. Ratsack in the roof near it's favourite entrance has seemed to fix my little pest.

We recently had a battle with ants as well.

A homemade mixture of sugar solution and Borax, for the fast running black ones, Ant Rid, for the little brown ones, outside under cover near the nest holes worked well after about a week of feeding them.

Still have nightly visits to our yard for both Ringtails and Brushtails for the water we provide for them.

Rats have now decreased since one of our neighbours has no more poultry, mainly due to her dogs killing them.

Cautious about using rat bait as we also get the long tailed mouse around occasionally. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-tailed_mouse

Given your profile photo, I am sure you know all about this!   My favourite!  ?

Yes the little black ones. Might try it if I can find the main nest. It is under a large tree and I will have to get the rake out.

The rat was just the everyday variety but smart. I fed it some nice hot dog for 5 days. It worked out how to set the trap off and proceed to an easy meal.
