I got kinda close this morning at Harvey Norman at Knox. All up $2100, broken down as follows:

TH50PX70A................. $1900.00

EXT WARRANTY 48 MTHS BTB... $150.00

DELIVERY.................... $50.00

It's being delivered tomorrow. :) Pretty competitive I guess for Melbourne, still a way off the legendary Sydney deal though. I'm dropping around to a mate's place to scan the receipt tonight, so if anybody would find it helpful, I can pass it along later tonight, just let me know where to send it.

Bye bye 51cm CRT... it served me well, but probably longer than I should have let it. Hehe...

Seeya,

nuxx.

Nuxx

You certainly outdid my effort at JB Knox! I don't think they were prepared to go the extra $50. And it was a Tuesday night, so HN weren't open. I think the JB extended warranty is better than the HN one though, so I wanted their warranty for peace of mind - just in case, you know... I could have gone to Myer for the extended warranty but their retail on it was like $549, so even with the TV at $1950 you end up paying $2500 before delivery.

Congratulations... enjoy the GP this weekend.

Cheers

Richard

What's the general differences between the warranties? I've opted for HN and haven't seen JB's warranty. Heard myers is very good but yeah very pricey.

Mind you I rang panasonic and the 48mth extra warranty is $1000 through them directly....

I'll have to get my various extended warranty booklets from HN and my one from JB out but the main differences (from memory) are: -

  • JB has 'no lemon' guarantee;
  • JB has fair wear and tear included;
  • JB has definite terms regarding replacement if repairs are uneconomical.

Do a forum search for "extended warranty" and some of these details (and the stories about dealing with HN) will come out. Also I have a mate who works at the ACCC who will not buy anything from HN.

I'm gonna put my head in the sand and pretend I didn't read that. :( Fingers crossed I have a trouble-free run.

Anyway, I took some measurements for a couple of people now that I have just taken delivery of my TH50PX70A, so will post them here for reference...

Box dimensions:

  • Height - 930mm - maybe a tad under, but assume 930mm to be safe.
  • Width - 1340mm - maybe 1350mm for bowing out at each end.
  • Depth - 400mm - maybe 420mm if it bows out a bit in the middle along the width.

And for Champloo, I've measured the width of the stand at the front, and it's pretty close to 815mm, give or take, so you'll have a little bit of room to spare at each side on your 850mm TV table.

Seeya,

nuxx.

Is your JB extended warranty back-to-base (ie. back to place of purchase or service agent), or does it allow for the service tech to come to your house ?

Anyone else know about the Myer, DJ, or other, extended warranties ?

OK nevermind... the $1879 price at Panasales is for a "renewed" product, whatever that means.

panasales "renewed" product = gee i hope we can sell this tv that was dropped/had water poured on/didn't meet quality standards/lighting surged/brownout-ed etc.

Well, it still comes with the full 12 month warranty from Panasonic, but personally I wouldn't touch it with a 30 foot pole.

VIERA Plasma TV from Panasonic Features 1,000,000:1 Contrast Ratio

By Chris Boylan

When it comes to enjoyable TV pictures, it's all about the blacks. Black level reproduction that is (otherwise known as "contrast ratio"), and Panasonic's new VIERA plasma HDTV models have that in spades (no pun intended). Some of the new plasma models feature a native contrast ratio as high as 30,000:1 and a rated dynamic contrast ratio of a whopping 1,000,000:1. Yes that's one milllllllion to one!

At a press event in New York this week, Panasonic executives showed off models in their new 2008 VIERA line (short for "VIsual ERA"). Some of the models are already shipping and others will follow over the next few weeks and months. The VIERA line now includes both LCD and plasma HDTVs, with LCD technology used in the 26-inch, 32-inch and 37-inch models, and plasma providing the technology for 42-inch sizes and above. 2008 sees the introduction of a new size from Panasonic (46 inches) to compete directly with a popular size in the LCD HDTV market.

The VIERA "80" series plasma TVs feature a black bezel with gray accent at the bottom. Pictured is the 50-inch TH-50PZ80U.

With side-by-side comparisons to 2007 models, the new 2008 plasma sets exhibited clearly superior contrast levels and a visibly improved anti-glare screen coating that minimizes reflections of ambient light off the screen. Even the lowly 720p models ("PX" series) feature significant contrast improvements over their 2007 predecessors, from 10,000:1 to 15,000:1 native contrast.

Panasonic's 2008 VIERA Plasma 1080p models feature a newly designed panel with increased contrast ratio and an improved anti-reflective screen (44% less reflective than 2007 models), a game mode, VIERA Link™, increased luminous efficiency (for lower energy use), lead free panels and an increased usable lifespan - a rated 100,000 hours to half brightness. That adds up to about 8 hours of TV per day for over 30 years. And even then the set is still watchable, just less bright.

The entire VIERA line features a new look, with a black frame and chrome or grey accents in the base. The 850 models feature a black frame with matte black base. Both the 800 and 850 models feature a new single pane of glass front, which provides the set with a smooth unbreakable facade. The 800 and 850 models also feature a swiveling base that allows you to easily re-direct the TV to your chosen viewing angle.

Panasonic's new VIERA "800" series features a black bezel with subtle chrome accent at the bottom. Pictured is the 46-inch TH-46PZ800U.

All 2008 VIERA models include an SD card slot for instant viewing of digital photos, and (in the 850 models) full high definition video in AVC-HD format. All models also include a new "Game Mode" to accelerate the panel's response time for gaming.

The entry-level VIERA PX80 series features 720p resolution with a native contrast ratio of 15,000:1 and three HDMI inputs. The PZ80 models bump the resolution up to 1080p (1920x1080 pixels) and the native contrast ratio to 20,000:1. The PZ85 series offers even higher contrast at 30,000:1 and adds a PC input. In addition, the speakers are now hidden in the front.

Also, the PZ85 models (and above) feature a new native 24p mode for watching 1080p/24 content from Blu-ray Discs and other 24p content. In this mode the TV flashes each film frame twice (48 Hz) to eliminate judder and provide smoother motion from film-based content.

Higher up the line, the PZ800 series adds a fourth HDMI input, offers 30,000:1 contrast and meets THX™ Certified Display specifications. The flagship of the line, the 850 models, which will be the last to become available in late Spring, feature an all-new Digital Cinema Color mode which offers up to 20% greater color saturation than earlier models. The 850 series will also include "VieraCast" Panasonic's IPTV feature which allows viewers to connect to popular internet sites such as YouTube to view video content without a computer.

The top of the line "850" series is pure black and features an extended color gamut capable of reproducing up to 20% more color than standard televisions. Pictured is the 50-inch TH-50PZ850U.

Full model line-up appears below along with links to view more details, purchase or pre-order these models on Amazon.

Gday folks , ive had a phillips plasma from Panasales for a couple of years , no issues at all and as said covered by manufacturers warranty.

Good enough for me provided that the cost differential is there .

Often these items are excess stock or damaged boxes , but to be fair , you will never know what the original cause is.

sorry, i didn't mean to cause offense or whatnot, was just kidding. it's just that i had a bad experience with a panasales "second" hd crt. item was a lemon after one week, after which the contracted service agent, and after that panasonic could not figure out what was wrong with it. in the first place it was panasale's responsibility, but then they pushed to panny, and then panny pushed it back when they found out they weren't responsible ala the contract (and warranty; within the first year or so or something it's panasale that has to look after you, or at least in late 2005 when i bought the thing). took me five months to get back my money, (they were very reluctant and stubborn) and lost the delivery fee of $100.00 (didn't even bother asking, hard enough with the refund)

but, i'm sure that it must be a rare occurrence  (no sarcasm)

hi rock123,

I paid by best denki card, 24 mths interest-free installment, plus they throw in 1st month free.  so it's kind of a no brainer to take up this offer!  ;D

and whenever you use the best denki card to buy stuff at their shop, they will credit 2% for your next purchase. ;)

so my advise to everyone here is to arm yourself with this card, it sure comes in handy, especially during the IT show.

cheers..!!

Is your JB extended warranty back-to-base (ie. back to place of purchase or service agent), or does it allow for the service tech to come to your house ?

Anyone else know about the Myer, DJ, or other, extended warranties ?

JB warranty is on-site so they come to you.

Myer's warranty wear and tear also covers items like the remote so it seems to be the best of the extended warranties.

JB's is pretty good.

HN isn't meant to be as good as either of the above - Have heard (unconfirmed) reports that cost of repairs is taken into account if they ever have to replace the set due to too many repairs, while with the other 2 if they end up replacing the set it is based on what you paid not what you paid - costs of repairs to date.

David Jones & Retravision - Peace of Mind extended warranty http://www.peaceofmind.com.au/

JB's warranty is a good tradeoff on price/features as Myer's is usually considerably more expensive.

Hope this helps

:-)
