  1. I have just been playing around with an Oppo 203 ( with updated firmware ) and as an experiment, I tried a 4K UHD .iso which was on an SSD plugged in to the front USB port. And it played it beautifully! Menu's , HDR, the works! only thing that didnt activate was the tone mapping feature. But the picture was what you would expect a UHD disc to look like but without the long loading times. It was way better than the Dune 4k player that seems to stuff up HDR. A quick check showed that it wont play 2K bluray iso's - in line with what we already know . I will try a couple more later to prove it wasn't a fluke I think we can assume that once the studios find out, Oppo will have to do an update to block iso access like they had to do for bluray. I might not update the firmware for a while............
  2. Hi all. Having a few issues. Bought a new 65" series 9 samsung back in janurary. Hooked it all up and ever since have had shitty quality picture ever since. Connections as follow all hdmi for audio and video oppo 103d connected via hdmi pass through my yamaha rxa3060 then to the samsung smarthub. I run all foxtel, xbox 360 laptop etc all through the hdmi then use the receiver to send it to the tv forget about the xbox laptop and foxtel that isnt the problem as the quality is average and with standard foxtel i dont bother with the pixels. The issue is with the oppo. The picture seems lagging and slow not sharp or clear at best. I have no darbee settings on the oppo. I had a play around and found some mode called hdr+ on the samsung which helped a little but nothing like the shop display was and only using component not hdmi for the demo Now being a novice with tvs and 4k etc etc i need some help because i bought the $4000 tv for the picture quality but its all hithouse and im unimpressed. Any settings i need to be weary of or have i done something wrong? Any help at all will be appreacitted alot as im at a standstill as to what to do next. Is a video calibration needed or better hdmi cables??
  3. Hi, With Netflix finally starting in Australia at the end of March, does anyone know if the embedded Oppo Netflix app will work with it?
  4. 5. Thought I would share this with you all - apologies if it is common knowledge. The HDMI handshaking issue I had became more apparent when I connected it up through a receiver, and then to the tv through the receiver. Advice from Oppo in the US was as follows: " If the player is set to PAL, then this is a known bug with the dual ABT 102/1018 where the player needs to be turned on with the EJECT button otherwise there is no HDMI output. You may be able to fix this by using an older firmware (http://oppodigital.c...are-07-0619.asp). If this does not fix your issue, then you will need to use the EJECT button when powering on the player. Best Regards, Customer Service OPPO Digital, Inc. 2629B Terminal Blvd. Mountain View, CA 94043 Service@oppodigital.com Tel: 650-961-1118 Fax: 650-961-1119" I powered the thing using the eject button. I had to re-enter multi region code again in the setup menu as that was wiped when I did this. Cheers Steve
  6. I've been putting off going "further digital" for many years now since I quite like the act of spinning silver discs. However, as I said in the title since hard drive space is now so cheap I decided to give it a try so I bought a little 4 Terabite usb hard drive and started ripping. I have little to no interest in streaming services like Tidal or Spotify so I was really only interested in ripping the wav files from the cds and storing them on my little yellow hard drive. I must admit I was a bit surprised to find out just how much space I had left once I was done with my 4 nights and 3 days of near-constant ripping. I have about 450 cds (not a big collection I know) and I found that I could fit them all on to the 4 terabite hard drive with more than 3.5 Terabites worth of space left over. Ah technology, how you've improved. So all of these, Plus another 90 or so that were still sitting in the 'to be ripped' pile at the time of picture taking, fit on the little yellow block of plastic in the first pic. And a whole lot more besides. Nice! Efficient! Lazy! I like all of these things. Actually I wasn't completely honest above, a big part of the reason I started this line of action was my owning of an Oppo 205, which is more than happy reading any usb sticks and hard drives plugged into it. So now I can just plug my little yellow hard drive in to the Oppo and leave it there. Quick, easy (and more importantly lazy) access to all my albums without moving from the comfort of my chair. I should have known this hobby would get worse for me with time. Oh well, it was bound to happen eventually. Here's to getting fatter quicker while listening to music.
  7. I have been running the my Oppo BDP105 analogue outs to my SS amp via a Yaqin CD3 Tube buffer. I notice the sound to be that little more "warmer" and easier on the ears, than just listening through hdmi. I thought perhaps a change of tubes from the standard chinese 6sn7 might be improve it marginally. After researching for a few days, I decided upon the Sophia Electric Grade A matched pair. They looked lovely and were recommended by a trusted source. What followed was quite surprising, the sound was that little more detailed and definitely less fatiguing once the volume was being turned up. Without trying to cause a debate, do SNA members out there think listening to tubes is less fatiguing than SS amps? Before After
  8. Hello all, I guess this has been asked before but i couldn't find anything about it... Does anyone knows how to stream from a Mac to an Oppo BDP-103D?...I see the Mac but i can't connect!... I want to use the better video processing capabilities of the Oppo and retired my old Apple TV (which only does 720p)... thanks in advanced cheers
  9. http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/oppo-releases-ha-2-portable-headphone-amp-and-dac/ http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/oppo-releases-pm-3-closed-back-planar-magnetic-headphones/
  10. Hi, I was wondering if people are using the Oppo as a pre amp, and what their opinion is. I am considering to buy a pair of active speakers for a 2.1 channel setup for the living room. The Oppo unit is going to be placed in a closed cabinet so heat production is one of my interest. Also, can you use the xlr outputs icw bass management for 2.1 movie sessions? The fact that I can control the unit via the network helps to eliminate any ir remote control transmitter/recievers. The other option is to buy an integrated amplifier which have to be placed into the same closed cabinet and will likely produce more heat.
  11. Today I was informed by a reputable Hi-Fi dealer that Oppo is totally pulling the Sonica DAC from the market. No product will be shipped in Australia and customers overseas who are in possession of units shipped to date will be supported by future firmware updates. I am hoping that it is a big practical joke or something (already confirmed that it is not 1st April - LOL) but I have no reason to doubt this guy. So now (if this is indeed a true story) I have to decide whether or not to wait for the UDP-205 or go now with something like the Cambridge CXN. I’m not overly concerned about paying more for the 205 but am now wondering about the whole “Oppo” situation given this alleged outcome with the Sonica DAC. I have certainly read a lot of good feedback in regard to the CXN both on this forum and elsewhere. What do you guys think – go with the Cambridge CXN now or wait for the Oppo UDP-205? My primary method of playing music will be via USB connected 2TB WD portable HDD – which worked flawlessly when using my BDP-105D.
  12. Heya all. Anyone with a JLTI oppo had theirs modded to the 4.2 revision, and the 'analogue clock booster'? I'm currently on revision 4.1 - and whilst being very happy, would love to hear it compared to the new 4.2 ACB+ version. Joe's currently doing a roadshow in NZ, but if there is sufficient interest, I'm sure we can convince him to do likewise back over the ditch. Excerpt from website: "The acronym ACB stands for "Analog Clock Booster" and although it sounds like a novel idea, to use an analog amplifier to control the strength, power and level of a clock signal, the difference it can make is truly surprising. It has been proved pivotal in the development of our ultimate clocking technology. The clock inputs of both the Sabre DAC and the Oppo Master Clock benefits from clocks with tightly controlled source impedance to precisely maintain their level and timing. Clocks are non-switching devices which require non-switching loads and the degree of isolation needed for the best results can only be achieved by using sophisticated analog amplifiers which have complete control over the insertion points of the clock signals. A full implementation also needs a large and complex power supply which together with the amplifiers makes for an extensive upgrade. This is a new concept and a White Paper will be prepared to further explain how the technology works; why the clock inputs are so extremely sensitive to the source impedance of the clock. The conclusion seems clear, that we are more sensitive to jitter than ever, that nothing in nature approximates it and detracts from naturalness"
  13. looks like Oppo have taken to social media to tease on the upcoming release.... https://twitter.com/OPPODIGITAL OPPO Digital ‏@OPPODIGITAL Jun 3 "Oh, look. It's the display on our upcoming 4K player, lighting up for the first time." see you again.... 1/19 ? not sure if this means - see you again on jan 19 2017 ? same thing on their Facebook page as well. in previous communications to anyone thats asked they have said availability late this year early next year. so I do think CEDIA perhaps for concept if they are aiming to launch for CES next year. for us in australia thats perhaps a month or two later we might get it. other responses from them has said there will be a 103 style replacement 1st followed later for a 105 level replacement. oled display ? perhaps this player isn't just a direct replacement using their current 101ci player as basis ps am glad got my sammy uhd player to keep me going in the mean time... can now sit back and wait... I'm scared what the oppo might cost being their 1st gen player...but fingers crossed not too much more than their current players and the 101ci starts t $599 the 103 at $799 samsung and particularly the panasonic look out ....
  14. Hi all, I've been using a BDP-83 with hardware mod for 7 years since ordering from Merlin. It's performed flawlessly until recently. It has started to fail to eject, often needing a tap on the case to help it. This I can live with. It's skipping and freezing a lot. I followed a guide and cleaned the lens with a cue tip and rubbing alcohol to no avail. The freeze yesterday was so bad the unit needed a power cycle to revive it. Oppo have informed me there are no longer replacement transports available for the unit. I realise I am long beyond EOL but does anyone have any ideas on repair (Sydney location)? I can't really afford $900 to replace it. Thanks Simon
  15. OPPO 205 UHD Universal player - a 2nd coming ? an end users perspective... Oppo has some history in universal players. I remember many years ago their first dvd universal players in the country with hdmi capability in the oppo 983. And then some years ago their first blu-ray universal with a decent dac stage and analog stage with the oppo 95 which even had balanced outputs. And now with the dawn of another new format in 4k uhd blu-ray.. we have the release of their universal UHD blu-ray player in the Oppo 205. And it is an interesting piece the 205 https://www.oppodigital.com.au/products/oppo-udp-205-4k-ultra-hd-blu-ray-player-black in that it does everything the 203 does... however like the 105 prior it adds a nice dac, very decent multi channel analog stage and true balanced very excellent 2ch analog output including XLR connectivity. Unlike the 105 though and with the 203 this player drops all forms of streaming apps and such. so in essence this is now a basic media player, can be used as a dac and plays every silvery disc under the sun including the new 4k uhd discs.. I’ve been reluctant to say too much about the 205 as some will remember the diabolical time I had with the 203 which I also bought on release, and especially once compared it to the pana 900 uhd player. So is the oppo 205 a 2nd coming for me in an oppo ? . Anyways, with some trepidation I decided to check out the 205 Unpacking and getting going Now I don't know if this is typical of how oppo packages the 205 ! but mine arrived with some serious packaging ! However harder it is to break into it, I still got it quickly in the rack and hooked up and going and this pleasing without hiccup even with out off box settings ! With a couple of more pics showing in the rack, this is one meaty looking unit ! very much like the front panel with its curves, with satin sheen of brushed aluminium and nice new buttons and display it certainly looks more upmarket than the matt finished 105 this replaces,. In price too the 205 retails for around abouts $2k which is about what the 105 did as well so Oppo have done well to bring this player out for the price they have. Time to check settings in the player and there are only 3 settings I changed from out box. -Have made sure the audio is set to bitstream rather than auto as auto can give some strange results at times - Made sure that dynamic range control is set to OFF rather than auto as at no time do I want any range control kicking in to limit the audio experience. -Lastly have made sure HDMI CEC control is off which really is worth making sure as can cause some rather strange things occurring at times otherwise. Time to check a few discs... first up Mocheeba's Brixton live concert DVD, Some might probably wonder why I test a DVD ? well I still have quite a few, many concert DVDs, also many films (many foreign language) and where most have never been released on another format. And does very well with DVD I would suggest. And thats good to see as that as historically this been a strength for oppo going back many years with the players released. Next up on Blu-ray Mr and MRs smith which is a bit of a favourite for me as an audio video treat, with a bit of a busy scene and bit closer up shot with details, the oppo is doing pretty well for details, richness of colours and skin tones etc. and then on UHD blu-ray Billy Lynn Half time walk, and great to see a picture come up in loading, as this one is made in 4k high frame rate 60hz and good see coming through as intended, and a particular challenge for players, systems and cables so good vindication that all working as should Region Mod with some cursory checks done with various disc formats and with player working as should, I decided time to pull the player out the rack and install the region free kit. Why not install in the first place you ask ? Well I wanted to make sure the player works across a few disc formats before going to the trouble of installing the kit. The kit I am using is the blu-ray mod one from Gattiweb, who is local to me so easy enough to procure http://www.gattiweb.com/bluraymod.html and something i got originally for the 203 and fortunately also works with the 205 player now installation is not quite as straight forward as for the 203.... at the time I bought the 205, gatti didnt have instructions posted for installation but fortunately for some he does now... regardless sans instructions, I decided to give things a go. and gave me an opportunity to get up close and personal with the innards.... and remove the 2ch analog board, and the multi channel analog audio board, and notice the good quality Elna audio grade caps used through out. will note some even glued in... and the audio purposed analog power supplier, though I also noticed a cover which I thought to remove and guess what there is also a switch mode power supply i see under the casing ! anyways I plug the region mod in and re assemble things. I can tell you this much I have NEVER had to remove SO many screws to ever do something like this before. And something quite frankly I wouldn't suggest anyone attempt unless technically inclined. Great that gatti has instructions to actual install these days but if I were you i would take up his service to also install for you. which he is generally quite reasonable for. Alternatively consider the JVB digital external mod, http://www.jvbdigital.nl/jvb.asp?cur=2&level=modifications&page=title&title=1285 this just plugs in the back port on the machine. I personally didnt want anything hanging off the machine but if want to save yourself a lot of bother this external kit might be for you. In anycase testing the region mod i found it to work pretty well and exactly as per the Gatti provided operating instructions with region selection for blu-ray via key sequence on the remote. and the mod making the blu-ray region selectable UHD blu-ray itself is region free by nature in discs we buy so of course the mod is not needed for playing any of the discs. Region free for DVD is important for me as have quite a few overseas sourced discs over the years e.g. foreign films, concerts movies (not related in our region) etc that its handy to be able to just pop in the player and hit play not worrying about region restrictions. Similarly with blu-ray often I've purchased from overseas where discs are locked to those regions and even more so these days where buying a 4K UHD from over seas and it comes with a blu-ray disc also packaged in that happens to be region locked. Pleased to have this capability to play the various discs I have. So what is it like in use ? part 2 awaits ....
  16. Hi I have an Oppo BDP-105D souped up with a Terra Firma Clock ( JR ) and it has been updated ( via LAN ) with the latest firmware 10XAU-83-1226 just today However it still wont play .mov files. According to the Oppo website, it should. http://support.oppodigital.com.au/support/solutions/articles/173182-what-are-the-supported-media-container-and-file-types- I was just wondering if others CAN play .mov files on their oppo and if they have any ideas about perhaps why mine wont. Kev
  17. Hi guys, i know this has been covered many times but i am loosing my mind here lol.... I cannot get the HT bypass setup write in my system, here are the basic components in the system: Source: Oppo bdp 95 Stereo pre amp: Rotel Rc 1580 (which has Ht bypass (tape 2) Receiver: Onkyo SR 876 Power amp: Rotel rmb1095 5 channel I cannot seem to get it connected right! What on earth am i doing wrong here grrrr lol...What am i missing? 18. Hi there guys. I need some help with choosing the right components for my home theater system. 5.4 My system at this stage is: Receiver Onkyo tx-sr876, Samsung Bluray player, Power amp is Emotiva xpa-5 5 channel, speakers are Paradigm Studio v4 60's, 40's and CC690 center, 4 x 10'' jensen subs, 110'' screen and Sony VPL HW50ES projector. My problem is: I would like to eliminate my Onkyo receiver and the crappy samsung blue ray player. (weakest links in my system) Ive been looking into getting the Emotiva umc-200 7.1 pre/pro and the new oppo bdp103 or bdp105 player. Im after the best possible sound and picture quality i can possibly get out of my system (without spending heaps of $$). Also do i actually need the Emotiva pre/pro, apparently the oppo bdp105 can remove the need for a pre/pro, would this be correct in my setup? Or would having the Emotiva pre/pro be more beneficial to my sound quality? I need the help from experienced audioheads here as im not up to speed with connectivity between certain components (im still learning the ins and outs of modern components, and loving it) : ) Any advice will be appreciated, thanks Heath.
