Anyone else into BBQ?

Featured Replies

I had an issue with the enameled grill plates on my FamilyQ, they rusted pretty quickly. I contacted Weber (Australia) and after some questions to check that I was following the recommended cleaning procedure Weber Australia couriered me new ones at no cost.

Yes, Weber cost a bit more than their competition but the service was good and I’ve had no issues since.

Pork shoulder with fennel salt.  Duck fat potatoes and green beans and a quinoa salad, The Mrs made sticky date pudding  A nice glass of Red Hill Rose

  • Fresh Barramundi, Valencia Orange, my back yard coriander, extra virgin olive oil.   Cooked on the Weber with the fish never touching the hotplate - instead atop the oranges with the bbq lid

Exactly the same experience I had. Turns out the original instruction manual is incorrect telling you to steam clean your grates after a cook as it cracks the porcelain coating and allows water in resulting in a rusty grill no matter how hard you season it.

I agree, that is why Weber were happy to supply new grill plates. I still use my old plates - especially if I'm finishing a cook using sweet (sugar/molasses/etc.) basting or marinade.

@:) al Get the Family Q and buy from a Weber specialist and get the high dome version. That's what we used to cook the entrée at my GTG.  I originally bought a Ziggy from BBQ Galore and got a full refund after 12 months when I'd cracked 2 sets of grill when roasting. If you have a large gathering just cook in batches.

I also have a baby Q for camping.

I'm going to try smoking my own Christmas leg ham in the Kamado this year. Best I have a trial run soon ?. My mother inlaw glazed a Christmas ham about 10 years ago... OMG, what have I missed my whole life, I've done 1 every year since and the Q is fantastic for this, and leaves the hot cooking outside at Christmas time which is an added bonus. WE now do the Turkey in the Q as well, the ham is done the night before or real early Christmas morning

definitely havent ruled out, just a bit smallish thats all. and dont really want to go the large sized things like the bigger ziggies  :)

why a specialist ? is there a reason ?

this below is what thinking off, is it the high dome version ?

That's the 1. Has a few added features like thermostat, higher hood for roasting big birds or ham for example, and the electronic lighting, which for me works first time every time. Only available from specialists, there's 1 near me on Whitehorse Rd Nunawading. They use bugger all gas too, I reckon I could get through a full summer on a large gas bottle, and we BBQ 3-4 nights a week in Summer.

We do not roast in our oven any more, we always use the Q... or now the Kamado.

Yep that true (in fact was on the phone with the owner for over an hour today) Not importing but just excited to be finally buying one (along with one ton of pellet wood to keep me smoking for a long time)

Trying to startup an events catering business specialising in low & slow cooking. Tons more work to be done but glad to finally going to have a crack at something I really enjoy doing.

sizeable box it comes in !

@blybo picked it up form ellis outdoor webber shop out your ways.

lady there was quite knowledgable. picked up a scraper, grill brush cleaner, and a baking tray, bbq cover. plus rather than the half plate she suggested the large fry pan. which seems to make sense. as we really only use the plate for onions and mushrooms & chopped things and fry pan would be more useful.

anyways she gave me full run through on it.

weather is good tomorrow. will assemble with the daughter. might even fire it up :D

Its quite a bit smaller than our old bbq, but still doesnt loose a heap in cooking surface. plus will be a lot more efficient/faster I think.

looking forward to first cook on it...

Ohhhh red one, nice.

And remember if ya' lookin' ya' not cookin'  so keep that lid closed even though every fibre in your body will want to go peeking every 30sec's. Soon as you conquer that you'll be cranking out some awesome food in no time.

Oh and another tip is the RHS tends to be hotter so keep that in mind when you load it up with steak, snags etc.

haha yes something will have to get used to ! as used to open bbq's prior. the lady at the shop 1st up asked me too ... have you had a webber before.... when I said no. she said 2st thing. you'll have to get used to keeping the lid closed. unless the lid is closed it aint happening :D

intersting ! will indeed have to keep it in mind :)

daughters got some friends coming over tomorrow so we'll give it a go for that :)

ps whats your thoughts on the half plate TB. I never got it, the sauce pan instead. but wondering now if I should have got the plate as well. is there much the half plate is useful for ?

Pan better as can keep convection going better. I’m flying solo with kids and wife at the in-laws farm. Came home early as such a great day, tunes cranked.

Ive just done my best reverse sear steak yet... and it wasn’t even that thick. Just served with Coles kale slaw
