They are great amps.  Mice warm textures and can drive almost anything when driven in parallel mono configuration.

 

If I didn't have my cj mono's, would still own these.

 

First thing I would do is jettison the KT88's and buy some 6550's.

You may be right about the valves.

 

I have a McINtosh MC275, and I prefer the sound of the 6550s which are in there now, as opposed to the KT88s which were in there when I bought it. Slightly less warm, but to my ear, more even-handed.

 

However, the valves it has in it are very well regarded, and I am sure it sounds great just as it is.

Imo, The trouble with KT 88's is that they are all bass and treble with nothing musical in the middle.

 

The 6550 is better balanced top to bottom with better bass control.

 

What 6550's are you using?

 

I like Svet winged C which is hard to get now and the Tung Sol 6550 if you need a slightly tighter bass giving you a bit more detail.
