Kaynin's lounge.

Howdy.  From time to time people show a bit of interest in the custom colour of the Osborn speakers, so thought I'd post this set-up.  It's in my lounge area, so the brief is for user friendliness, not critical listening (that will be the rumpus!)...to that extent I've been very happy because my wife gets use out of the system, and I enjoy the performance.  So this room is finished, I expect the only changes will be a new TV in due course.  Next is my headfi set-up, and then the rumpus (which will take an extended period of time!)

Great looking set up Kaynin. I very nearly went with those guys for a cabinet myself. They are very talented dudes.

Very nice indeed.

Very nice. Similar to my HT set up, albeit nicer. I build the cabinet myself (great fun) and have the centre speakers at a great up tilt. Works a charm.

For the purpose and ease of use you require that is a brilliant setup . :thumb:

That's come up very nicely Kaynin.  :)  John at Aranmar does great work!

Yep, great to communicate with as well.  John knew exactly what I was after with the centre speaker, couldn't have been easier.  Nice to have the rounded edges matching the speakers too, along with the colour.  The GTG at your place Quarky was perfect timing!

Yep, I previously had the centre speaker in a box, but that raised the tv and blocked out the mural too much.  The centre speaker inside the cabinet has worked like a charm.

An absolute show piece - well done. I bet the WAF is very high.

Thanks elcamry, it's a multi-purpose system as it has to fill a large area with music (the lounge is connected to the kitchen and also dining area), also be a standard I'm happy with for movies, and be good for my tech-unsavvy wife!

Thanks mate, yep, obviously there's compromises because she wanted satellite speakers.  I said no way, she said if it's white then I'm happy...in the end, I love the white gloss finish, so I haven't found it to be a compromise at all!  In all honesty, I now find she talks about the system with pride, so that's given me a great deal of satisfaction.  :)

awesome ! it really have come up a treat ! very tastefully done and I for one love it that wife decided she wanted satellite speakers ! how many wives would say that given the choice...most would say they'd rather sound from speakers that can be heard but not seen I suspect. so good on her ! and great to hear she talks of the system with pride !

great to see something work so well together and likes of osborn i think we are just so lucky to have in this country so can get something like this that sounds great and looks great as well and done to suit what after ...exactly :)

Yeah exactly Al, we're very lucky to have such high quality local products, not just Osborn but so many others.  When you look at value for money, they become hard to go past.  Osborn will be on the list for the rumpus, but I really want a different sounding system to this one that I will also love - but value for money wise it becomes hard to go past.  Anyway, that's not for a long while yet!

When I mentioned satellite speakers I meant she wanted tiny ones as the mains that you can't see, not the rear's in my pictures!  My mistake, I described them incorrectly...  it's funny, her sister bought tiny speakers and my wife loved them because of the WAF factor, but now living with proper speakers she can't stand listening to her sister's!

Great looking system!

So neat!

Bet it sounds great too.

Okay, so 6 years later...not much remains in the original system.  All good though, this is where I want to be right now.  I moved from a 5.1 set-up to predominantly 2 channel.  It's in my living room so the TV does get a run, but only about 20% of the time.  I have a home theatre set-up, and found I just wasn't using the 5.1 in the lounge.

My digital side I use a Consonance Reference 7 to stream for background/music discovery, and have CD rips on a SSD for better quality.  My turntable is hooked in, which is a Music Hall MMF7.1 with Ortofon blue.  Other than that the TV is connected to the pre, and it does a great job for shows and movies.  I have a NUC for movies/tv shows and the kids stuff, so it's a simple system that works well.  I use the Bluesound Powernode to run a pair of outdoor speakers.

Speaker cabling is Osborn Datalink and the speakers are Osborn Epitome Reference Elite.

All good here - trust all is good for you too.

Your speakers look great in piano black there sir.

How do the valves compare to the Luxman you had before?

  • Author

Yeah thanks, I have some Eclipses in piano white in my movie room (possibly start a thread on that later).  I love the timber finishes the Osborn range come in, but it's either black or white by choice for me!

The Luxman is a beautiful amp and I really enjoyed owning it, broke my heart a little bit to let it go.  That amp was an itch I had to scratch, but so was a pre-mono bloc set-up, so scratching that one now!  I love the Cyber 800's, so much power it's not funny, plenty of bass control, sound stage is superb.  The Luxman is a nice integrated that sounds beautifully smooth, but I find the Liner pre/Cyber set-up is a larger scale of everything, and smooth as well.  Detail is superb as well.

Well a couple of changes recently. I moved on the Opera Consonance Linear 1 pre and the Cyber monos for a Weston Acoustics Topaz KT120, which arrived today. Obviously very well built by Earle. I haven't had a chance for a listening session yet, but have already noticed fantastic bass control. The Reference 7 dac/streamer has moved to my head-fi set-up, and replaced with a Cambridge Audio 851N which is a fully balanced unit. Anyway, I'll live with this rig for a while and let it settle in. I now have more room to play with speaker placement, maybe some bass traps will find their way in. I'll be able to try toeing in these hefty speakers too, which has previously been difficult.

Looks like a gorgeous piece mate. Can see why you waited so patiently that long for it.

Stunning, congratulations @Kaynin 👍

That looks awesome with the speakers looking big, black and monstrous (the way I like 😀) in that setting.
