My Next Horns

I’ve been curious about that felt/time paneling on a front wall behind horns. Agree on the horizontal bass bins bringing the system right down as that’s something I need to explore. Would be nice to do multiple walls as done there. Looking very nice indeed.

Wall diffuser like Tuyens at Douglas Hi Fi , their modest asking price was $680 for a 4 pack of 60x60cm panels. I was thinking maybe $180 and walked out with my tail down instead.

Recently visited  Tuyens to check out the new setup in the flesh , looked fantastic and sounded smooth , done a great job.

Mick gave me some advice how to improve the setup to improve realism and coherency by time and Vertically aligning the drivers.  I’m not great on the power tools but it has definitely got my thinking what a frame to support this would look like…

Replaced the mid high flower horn and put the vintage Neumann cinema drivers paired with the Azurahorn 160s in doing 1-5khz.     They are in some way time and vertically aligned with the midlow horn.   I’m sitting probably less than 2 meters from the mouth of the horn. 😂 all good fun!

Like father like son.

Far out @tuyen! This has evolved fast ... Talk about a system with depth... It looks two meters or more into the room lol

I love that the family is in amongst it all... music bringing people together! 🙂

Looking pretty wild with the trio of Azuras Tuyen.

What’s you ears telling you in regard to Fibreglass vs your Wooden horns ?
Exciting stuff V

Received some 3d printed multicell horns from Brazil to have a play with. From Stein horns on eBay.

Haven’t had much experience with multicells so looking forward to it!

Cheers V.  Really hard to compare as the flare profiles between the fibreglass resin azurahorns are so different to the shallow constant directivity wooden ply horns.     From a flare profile perspective, I think I actually like the deeper Azuras. I like the sonic qualities when I hear more of the actual horn loading than the driver if that makes sense?

Does anyone know which room these are in at the HiFi Show?  🥸

They actually enquired a few years ago, but we did not have a big enough room available!

Looks good - what do you think of the sound versus the Azura?

I notice the j bins are vertical again - the problem with placement of mid-highs with the round horns is keeping vertical height near ear level.

I’d like to try the wooden Altec 1505b replicas from Europe…

Killing unwanted resonances and colourations , Hornicide in progress.
Via Dynamat like heavy material application.  Edge Diffraction is also hugely audible and the temporary rounded outer rim edge application offers a solution in keeping off axis tunes in tact. Sound check difference against the untreated horn is simply incredibly positive and well worth the effort.

Nice work V.  You been busy!

The sound deadening works well. I used the same on Altec 511b in the past to reduce ringing.     I should try some on the back of big fibreglass 160hz azurahorns...

Interesting job done on the PSE144 there. Always wondered if it was worth the effort. I've experimented with laying blankets over the horn body which seems to deliver and have a plan for resonance reduction with  the Azura 240/B&C Coaxial.

Good job, well done, looks like a very neat job.

Hi Tuyen.

I used a paint on bitumen from Bunnings many years ago on my 160 Azurahorns (I still miss those Midbass horns in many ways.  They were so good).  Anyway it made a truly transformative difference to the sound.  Probably not great for my health as the solvents in the release agent stayed in the room I was sleeping and living in for perhaps a year or more as I applied more and more coats.  The thicker the coats the better they sounded (and the deader they sounded on the rap test).

The end result of all the bitumen (I got the idea originally from seeing the rear of many of the Goto horns) was a much clearer sound.  Much less smear and more direct with more weight and power.

I guess a counter would be that too much damping may eventually kill the sound?  (as happened with too much damping applied to the rear of the DD55000 Everest horn (we also drilled holes in the horn and poured sand / rock like crushed garnet into the hollow cavity of the horn).  You could really tune the sound with the amount of dampening inside.

Great thread!

Current state of diy horn setup while Martin (Mr Azurahorn) is modifying the 160hz horn to compatible with variety of drivers including the Goto Unit SG-505TT midlow compression driver unit which runs a non standard 29mm internal diameter threaded exit.   Martin is truly a master craftsman when it comes to creating and working with these Le Cleac’h acoustic horns.

accuphase p20 running the EV woofers in J scoop bins.   AES SE-1 300b on the faital pro hf1460  and NanoAT 6BX7 amp on the Goto SG-160.    All channels on gentle first order slopes.

Those Goto compression tweet's of your look truly beautiful!!!

Looking forward to hearing your impressions.

@tuyen

Nice. What are the horns used in the current incarnation?

Hi @zydeco, cheers!   It’s a faital pro lth142 elliptical tractrix horn paired with the 1.4” faital hf1460 cd.  The goto sg-160 compression tweeter has an inbuilt 3000hz straight horn attached to it.

Had an enjoyable catchup with @La scala and @statman to chat audio. Mainly tubes and horns (still my passion).   Have to give a big thanks to Mick again for lugging the big Azurahorn bass horns up to Perth on his trailer for me.    Excited to get them fired up!

Oh us HornyTubers…

A nice surprise visits from Mick today, reluctantly parting with classic gear he had great times with, Azura Bass Horns plus  the almighty JBL 2360 Elephant ears sized Horns.
Excited , Tuyen sure will put these to good use.
Thanks for Launch and good vibes.

I will be keen to see what you think of the bass horns as I have mine stored in the garage.

Can you hear it from there ? 🙂

The pair that @Upfront and I had built maybe over decade ago were really great. Loved them paired with goto unit sg-38wn 15” woofers.  They did 50-350hz nicely. The thing I liked most about them was how well they integrated with the midlow horn channel.  I remember thinking of them as the final frontier to my multiway horn journey.

I foolishly disposed of the horn during my ‘leaving hifi’ phase.   But as we all know, the itch never goes away and here we are. 🙂  Reunited with Mick’s pair he had built.  I no longer have the goto unit woofers, but do have some other drivers that hopefully work as well (EV 15b, Altec 515b, JBL E140, PHL 5061m and yamahas).

Martin has also made some beautiful 340hz horns for the 8” rullit fcs. Not much horn loading going on with such a shallow profile for a 8” throat, more like a big waveguide.  Should be a nice combo with the azura bass horns.
