Edit, PS @@Darren69, your idea for this thread the stories of others experience is making a REAL and POSITIVE difference to myself and those and likely their Families, continuing to abstain, thanks mate.

Am loving all of this.

However, this arvo was a huuge temptation for me.

Had a bad people-type day. To cut a boring story short, you give people nothing and they complain. You spend 100's of thousands of dollars on them because they were complaining...and they complain....

SO, had to drop into Woolies for some groceries before the weekend...guess whats next to Woolies??

Darren-brain-respite. A shop full of lovely bottles of Darren-mind-calmer. Thousands of litres of shut the f$%& up and don't give a f^&* now anyhow now I am on my way home with a tally between my leg and a six pack of something crafty and Oz made to sample after that. Lovely containers of the great eraser of life.

I cleared the checkout with a sideways 'you too' to the insincere checkout chikky and looked straight ahead past the food court bogans and screaming single mums and went straight for the car! :D

I made it. :)

Now, for the weekend.

I will say (though maybe I shouldn't) that less grog = more sack performance.

And if that doesn't seem like a realistic option think of it this way: at least you don't have to argue with your hands afterwards about whether they liked it.

Did the left one know what the right one was doing?

Over ate again this evening, but kept the cravings at bay through a major trigger of the past, watching the footy.

Off to bed and will ride again tomorrow morning

The myfitnesspal site has shown me that I eat too much one day and then not enough the next. It is also interesting (read-depressing, haha) that just a few types of foods (bikkies etc) will double your daily intake!!

Woke this morning to lightning all around in the dark outside, went back to sleep.

Also a tempted visit to Woolies last night for food supplies with the bottleo next door. Had to get the missus some white wine too (I don't drink the stuff so safe there) so actually went in there. Funny, or sad, (depends which side of the fence you are on) but basically walked the well beaten path from the front door straight to the beer fridge at the back before I realised what I was doing, considering the wine is not there. Creature of habit?

It's been 4 days. Weekend coming up though. Stay strong guys.

Wife had to start early this morning. Went for a 50 minute walk, my group ride wouldn't of got me home in time. Surprised my 1/4 chicken and chips wasn't worse for me on my fitness pal, was about 800 calories but had enough in the bank to still be under my goal. Walk this morning basically used all of my breakfast, so back at full days allowance

See ya later chaps, my ride is over!

Achieved 4 days straight which is my personal best in probably 3 years so am treating myself to a couple of nice single malts tonight.

Phase2  is to moderate (i.e. dont drink the whole bottle in 2 days) so my plan is to measure out  my nightly quota which will probably be 100-150mls and stop there.

Going to try and do another 4 days next week.

Don't try for 4 days next week, commit to it. Lanuguage like "try" is only giving yourself an out.

Do you use a shot measure? I'd highly recomend it. I'm like you and can polish of a 1/3rd of a bottle of 43% spirits without signigficant issues the next day. However I find I only drink that much as the more I have, the bigger & bigger the next pour will be. I decided to go to pre mixers for that reason even though it was more expensive.

Another idea... try using a hip flask if you have one or buying one of those small hip flask style bottles (and a little funnel) and commit to have that and no more?

If you can keep your working week alcohol free it is a big step, so be proud of that, however, the binging is just as bad or worse than those who have 2-3 standard drinks 5 nights a week.

My goal here will not be total abstenence either, but I feel I need to reach my birthday in late March alcohol free first, and then keep it only to "occassions" from then on.

I recall the controlled drinking program done in the D&A field.

I didn't follow what they did all the way through and haven't bothered to go back and look at it, but it wasn't looking good at the time

Good luck Tubularbells

I have been trying and failing at your measured system for years.  I don't drink Mon - Thu, then have a treat on Friday

Measure my whisky for the night into tumblers, commit to just having just those few, then as the stress of running a small business washes away, my mood mellows, the music sounds better, I finish my allocation and think "One more"    several more later and the idea is gone

Monday comes and I promise to do better this week.     I don't suffer hangovers and never get plastered but 22 standard drinks in a weekend cant be good

I am currently having one of my 4 week dry spells and have no issues not drinking, controlled drinking is my down fall

I agree with Blybo.  You need to move your focus from this is hard to I am doing this.  I have been out for dinner and bbqs this last fortnight and copped flack from friends for not drinking, I just change the subject.  The wife drinks a wine every night and I generally poor it for her, I set the mind set I am  not drinking so there is no temptation.

This commitment online should be good for those of you struggling, when I take my regular months off I tell my adult kids and commit to the wife, having done that I set my self a line I wont cross.

Again Good luck

ps

I always have alcohol free February.

I gives you a detox after Christmas - New years and its the shortest month of the year

I am proud of you guys collectively having a go at this.

Keep up the good work.

Cheers

No beer taken, The head ache is gone, thinking clearer, replaced beer with a bucket (5 liters) of ice water and a little cotties concentrate every night,,,,,,,eating better.

Friday, no don't want a carton,

Out of the woods I think.

Back to work.

:)

Hey good work TB.  If you believe a 'reward' system for 'good behavior' is what will head you in the right direction, then stick with it - you and your family are the ones who will benefit.

Sometimes baby steps are the largest we'll ever take...

What does a normal week look like for you joz?

Not a heavy drinker but I do drink EVERY day.

It's part of my daily wind down ritual.

2-3 glasses of red per night, occasionally I'll finish a bottle.

Never (well very rarely) over drink but I feel thats its just to regular without a break.

But I am trying to budge some kilos and wine makes me eat more aswell.

20 years ago was 20 kg lighter :(

Yeah, more-so a mental thing then.  Well the first week is a good start...

4 years ago I was 20kg's lighter...

@@Kaynin yeah too true, going in too hard will only result in dismal failure. My goal is about moderation. Nice avatar btw "magic dragon"
