Hi Joz

Are the knee issues related back to the martial arts training?

Just that back in the day I saw these issues crop up for some, usually it went back to being taught improper technique in the beginning.. and once that damage was done....

Not in my case Orts, for me its osteoarthritis.

The load bearing joints seem to go first.

Anyhow a lifetime of working standing up hasn't helped either.

on another note.

What I have found interesting though is how common depression  or anxiety is, myself included for many years.

It was amazing when a friend who I had worked with told me about what he was going through, well it got me to seek help and I have not looked back.

Perhaps I was lucky as all it took was 1/2 a very small pill daily for near overnight turnaround.

Don't know why I had put up with it for so many years thinking that it was a mood thing and when everything else got better so would I.

I also need a serious kick in the arse in relation to my drinking habits these past few years. Discovered whisky 6 years ago and instantly fell in love with the stuff. At my peak I had over 150 bottles in the cellar under the house. How may do you think I have now? Bloody one and the only reason that ain't cracked open is because you could buy a small car for its current value.

Unfortunately my drinking took over and I could easily go through a few bottles a week. Not to mention all the beer, wine and othe stuff! 3 weeks back I poloshed off a bottle of Absinth in 2 evenings without any problem at all Like many others it started as just a w/e thing but over time progressed into the demon it is today. Up until today (more on this in a moment) I seriously cannot remember my last "dry" day. Part of the problem is overtime you adapt so you dont feel it like others would. I would also say I'm a highly functional drunk and the last time I really felt I overdid it was a few years ago which I also believe is part of the problem as my booze never hampers me like getting me sick from it, I'm mellow and am easygoing when drinking so the family does not see any negative effects (I'm sure my wife has no idea how much I'm consuming) so there's nothing to really stop me apart from the fact that my habit is costing me about $150 a week.

The AA slogan rings so true to me

"I drink too many, one drink too few"

Now onto the good news, Darren's post has really inspired me so today instead of getting home and knocking back 4-5 beers I went for a run with my dog instead and now I'm listening to some tunes while typing with my CUP OF TEA...haha

......Let's see how long this lasts.

My stats today, for the record - 90kg. Keen to get down to 85 which would still leave me in the overweight BMI category but I know at 85 I am looking pretty lean and feel great.

I already cycle most days, and usually pretty hard so exercise is not the problem. Food is my major failing, I just eat too much of it. Giving up the booze is the easy part!

@@Tubularbells ....man up and join us. That would make six.

One of us, one of us, one of us, one of us.

Jake, booze first. ;)

Who knows, you might be able to eat the same without the booze keeping the weight on? Time will tell. Just sayin.

I've drunk water tonight and that's it. Been out cleaning an aluminium bike frame I'm about to paint and do up into a daily rider for me.

Oh and tipping a cider down the sink!! Day 1.... it starts.

Thaaats right.

Just back from my walk-run-walk-run-wheeze @@blybo :)

PLEASE NOTE (not a joke)

Alcohol withdrawal can be a very serious matter, and depending on frequency and amounts it can even be life threatening for some. Withdraw symptoms can include things like hallucination, risk of heart attack, stroke or death.

You can read further via this link http://www.drugs.com/health-guide/alcohol-withdrawal.html or do searches as there is many resources on this.

Please, if you may fit the description of being possibly at risk, see your GP or another medical professional before attempting to stop cold turkey.

Edit: I'm sorry that I didn't recall this aspect earlier, safety first.

Hehe,

Got up at 5:45 and did my ride, 32kms this morning. Hampered by a bit of a summer cold so I was wheezing to, but all good, what doesn't kill us...

Actually, I am thinking I have lost a little bit of weight simply by not thinking of drinking beer, along with the glowing-newness-honeymoon period of this new pursuit.

Possibly.

For the sake of the thread (if others want to track weight loss) I was 91.5kgs this morning. Weekly Monday weigh in?

If the others wish to, we can follow each other in this app https://www.myfitnesspal.com/ to help with motivation. I use it on and off on my iPhone and its very easy after a few days.

I have found this app to be useful. I tried a bunch but found this one had the features I wanted. Not free but $1.29 isn't going to break anyone. Once you get over a couple of months, you really don't want to reset it by having a drink. A friend used a similar one for giving up the cigarettes.

Will check them out tonight.

Careful Darren you will end up sipping late and thinking about Gough :-)

myfitnesspal is very good for calorie counting / exercise tracking- the food d/base is good, the bar reader works well and you can customise your own / homemade meals.  I use every day.

+ 1 I've used it in the past, highly recommended

+2

I've used it to in the past. Seed though for me calorie counting only got me so far. And then seemed nom calorie counting got me over the ton. Right now after 3weeks on this paleo thing I've lost 7kgs. Hopefully in an alcohol free state it will lead to more.

I am SNADarren69 on fitnesspal. :)
