How much booze to buy for a wedding.

Sounds very reasonable. Surely you know someone who's worked in a pub before??? They would know roughly the wastage and breakages %'s

  • I'm sure you've already done the math but the above works out to 180 bottles of wine, 90 champagne and  45 cases of beers.  By the fourth hour everyone's going to be plastered at that rate.   Oh, an

  • Agree - I've caterred a few events - big drinkers too - regardless of the 9 hours not many wil actually top off 18 stubs without pouring them out- along with a few glasses of champane or reds as well

Don't let anyone who isn't qualified play with the keg set up. You will waste beer like you would not believe and everyone gets shitty.

yep I know plenty who have worked in a pub,  but a pub is a bit different to a self catered wedding.

My specific concerns/questions are:

 - how much wastage to allow for?

 - glass, plastic or disposable?   I think this beer deserves glass,  but then need to decided how many to hire.   Do people rinse and top up old glasses or get a new glass each beer.   (There's a commercial dishwasher at the venue I think).

 - who pours.    Do I pay for a person or 2 to man the bar,  or let guests pour their own?.

 - will 2 taps be enough for 70 odd drinkers..or will  it create a bottleneck and cues of people waiting for a beer.    I reckon I'd have 1 tap of easy drinking beer and 1 of something with a bit more guts.

 - jugs??   this could be a good way of reducing bar traffic.

I know I drink more if there's a jug on the table.

would a family member or 2 do rotating shifts on the bar? Definitely glass for Beechworth beer. I thought an experienced bar worker would know average breakage and wastage rates.

yeah jugs are definitely a double edged sword.   Convenient but a bit dangerous.

I'm sure we could get family or friends to volunteer for a shift.   If they're short enough (30-60min) it'd be a small ask and might even a bit of fun.   A good chance to meet and talk crap to other guests while they play barman.

Paying someone wouldn't be too bad either.  $20/hr so peanuts in the grand scheme of things.

ok, so just closing out this thread. The wedding was a cracker and we had more than enough booze...as expected.   Here's the stats:

Number of guests = 136

White wine = 60 bottles.  (~24 left over).   - Galli Estate.  Pinot Grigio

Red wine  = 60 bottles (~18 left over) -   Sangiovese Shiraz

Bubbles = 84 bottles (~18 left over) - Brown Brothers  and   Santa & D'Sas Prossecco

Beer = 6 kegs  (1 left over)  -   Bridge Rd brewery.  Beechworth.

Obvioulsly I could have had a case less of each wine...but then my cupboard wouldn't be quite so well stocked now!!.,

Given the numbers there you'd wanna hope there was some left over!

But yeh, a well stocked drinks cupboard after a party is always a good thing.

2 slabs light beer.   (1.75 slabs left)

2 slabs mid strength (1.5 slabs left)

5 slabs full strength....all gone.

1 bottle of rum.   gone.

1 bottle whisky.   gone

you could give them away for a song

I went to a Mormon wedding when I lived in Salt Lake City. No booze. :-(

Luckily there was a bar close by so I snuck out at various times for a beer or two or three or four more.

They were dark and evil days, but the catering would have been simpler.

In my experience (no I'm not married yet, phew) of weddings I've been to, there is always 1 or 2 blokes at the wedding that out drinks all the others.

Btw Congratulations.

yep...we had a couple of those.   but they weren't necessarily out drinking,  they were just getting messier than everyone else.   One bloke was put on the waters at around 5pm by his mrs.

Congrats!

Well looking at those numbers the guests certainly got stuck into it.  I always judge the success of a party by the amount of hangovers the next day!  So much better to have left overs than running out...

By my calculations it's approx. 14 standard drinks for every person....but it was over 10+ hours so I'm not surprised.

There was certainly a few hangovers...I know I had a cracking one..  The worst bit was that I was in bed around 5:30am...then up at 8:00am and back to the hall to pack away tables, chairs etc etc etc.     Terrible management on my part   I should have delegated more!.
