Gin & Tonic!

Featured Replies

Had a look through the previous threads here and didn't seem to find anything on the topic.

Anyhoo. Bought a bottle of gin a week or so ago, with the intention of having some gin & tonics - having never tasted them before. Well. Bottle of Bombay Sapphire Gin, a bottle of Schweppes Indian Tonic Water and a lemon off the tree in the backyard, and off I went.

Few iceblocks in a glass, slice of fresh lemon, and two parts tonic water to one part gin. First mouthful - Lovely! :D

This is obviously a simple way to mix it up (simple is the best, maybe?) but I really did enjoy it. Finished the bottle tonight, disappointingly - but I think it's something to purchase in future!

I know there's bound to be G&T drinkers here too - how do others make them? Any special additions, anything out of the ordinary, what have we?

Just for kicks:

Mmmmmm.

Quite so Nude. Tanqueray is the best. Bombay Sapphire becomes too floral after the first drink for me.

For some reason the Duty Free stuff tastes best :D

Seconded

Gin's great.......next you'll be into martini's. Could be about time for a revival of an old classic?

I reckon I stay soberer on gin than most other drinks, but I'm not sure that's an advantage;). Also, I've probably been influenced by the (old wive's tale?) that gin makes you more depressed than other spirits.

Not sure that's true.....in sufficient dosage, all drinks seem to make me depressed next day:o

Cheers

Tony

Bombay Sapphire is fine for me

Its a refreshing summer drink I reckon - when you don't want a beer

G&T is a great drink, especially in summer. If you're ever in the tropics you'll know why it was popular there, very refreshing. Actually I also drink tonic straight sometimes, I quite like it. More a summer drink in Melbourne, although with climate change who knows.

Bombay Sapphire or Tanqueray? Not an easy decision, I've always been partial to Bombay but Tanqueray is also very good. Either will do me.

One other thing, try a slice of lime instead of lemon, just slightly different and very nice.

Next time you are in Melbourne Stygian you will have to visit the Gin Palace,a great way to sample different types of gin and a fantastic bar.But be careful this place can be very addictive!

I thought it was because the quinine in the tonic water prevented malaria?

Will make a note of it! As well as checking out the Tanqueray gin sometime :D And the lime instead of lemon, too.

A very long, long time a go, I use to drink cans of mixed drinks and Gin and Ginger Ale or Gin and bitter lemon were wonderful for a refreshing start to a night out. I was very young!!

'bout 20 years too late!

Gin and tonic GTG in summer - now that could be a fun audio night - blind testing for sure!

Tanquaray tastes better to me. Especially duty free which is 47% proof as opposed to the paltry 40% domestic stuff. Why can I not buy it in 1 ltr bottles? 700 cc is not big enough!

Try 'Pink Gin'.

Shake 3-5 drops of Angoustora Bitters into a glass - Swirl.

Add Ice.

Add Gin.

Top up with Water / Soda or Sparkling water.

Enjoy!

Last week I had Gin mixed with Apple and Guava Juice - Fantastic!

If the Lemon or Lime is too much for you, try sliced Cucumber [cut off the skin]. Goes best with Bombay Gin.

For tradition though it has to be Gordon's.

The best Gin & Tonic ever, was in a little hotel, buried in the jungle, off of Scotts Rd [singapore]. The bar was huge, made from solid mahogany, the a/c was always at full cold, and the peanuts were delightful. Mind you this was the 60's and I was only 17 and easily impressed. Kept it to myself though and only took, 'special' girlfriends there.

Only the Writer's Bar and 'Singapore Slings' at Raffles could beat it.

Feel a sudden urge to play Jimi Hendrix!

Steven.

I don't get it :D I can't get past the smell - it always reminds me of eau de grandmother.....:D

cheers

Give me a beer any day. Ever since I saw the drawing "Gin Lane" created about 1750 by William Hogarth it put me off Gin. So it is Cascade Premium for me.

I berry much object

Cascade - a great beer and what a Brewery - if youu havn't done the tour through Cascade Brewery you have not lived.

Yep, and apparently it was very bitter, so they added gin to make it more palatable.
