Frankfurts

Featured Replies

I like a good frankfurt.

I have vivid and fond memories of the frankfurts of my youth. My parents owned a deli in Acland Street back in the '60's and '70's, back in the days when "going to the deli" did not mean going to Coles or Woolies.

My favourite franks were from Adam Butchers in the Village Belle. There were a number of other butchers who were very close in quality. Alas all those butchers are no more. They have passed away, taking their magic to the grave with them.

During our recent visit to the old country I had franks a couple of times. They were okay, but not spectacular. Not the juicy, powerpacked experience of crisp skin bursting as you bite into the frank, followed by a sensation that puts a smile on your face and tells you that life is still worth living. The taste buds never lie.

The reason I post this is that the Mustuds are extremely fortunate in have a real deli very close that stocks truly excellent franks. They are made by a local butcher who delivers every Wednesday. They are best if you buy them that day.

Today is Wednesday.

I came home a little late today, picked up by The Goddess after toiling to improve the want of the proletariat. Which is what Mustud does. I asked if it was too late for dinner. Goddess informs me she has visited deli, and as I am so late I shall have franks.

A couple of slices of toasted thick sliced bread (made by a baker who also delivers to this deli) with butter. A few sweet and sour cucumbers. A generous spoonful of Thomy mild mustard. Two of the fresh long franks, heated just right.

All is right with the world. For a little while, anyway.

I went out to Coney Island on a rainy day just to have a Nathan's Chilli Dog. It was well worth the trip.

Funny, my old man had a big issue with mass produced franks (read Dons) a few years ago and has been on a mission to find a product worth consuming. Starting in Afrangastan, it has taken him to butchers from Bendigo to Sale. His trips have grown in popularity, going about once every 4-5 months, and now takes orders from his friends. He ends up putting in orders of 10-20 kilos or so each time! He gets home, sorts the orders and friends start coming over to collect. His wife goes out Wednesdays, and that's his frank night! Funny thread SM, I can relate.

Anyway, my wife and I went to the QV market about a year ago and found a butcher that had awesome franks. That's the closest to me that I've found.

Yup, not much else to go out there for...an old board walk...a boneyard full of American school buses...chili dog all the way.

I am breaking out in the cold sweats at the mere mention of these abominations of the snag world. Last time I had one fo those was Bathurst in 2007 ( yeah risky!) Christ I was ill, one of the longest days of my life.

I was kidding actually. I do like a nice frankfurt in a soft roll with onions and mustard. Strangely enough Aldi sell some nice franks in a glass jar which are quite tasty.

Well, that just doesn't work, does it?

How can you drink a decent whisky out of a used French's Classic Yellow?

Or a ketchup bottle?

I have fond memories of Bavarian Weissworst cooked gently in a boiler at my wife's uncles place in Altdorf, Deutchland. Washed down with a Franziskaner hefeweizen. Yum. Never had one as good as that back home.

The best memories are the simple ones.

For that moment you give up your resistance to artery clogging, heart attack food........

Those who are religiously against having pork, don't know how good life really is.......

Well, that just doesn't work, does it?

Yep, works brilliantly for me, which is what matters...

I respect your experience, however the question remains. What do you drink your whisky out of?

I mean, this works on just every level
