Robert Randolph and The Family Band - We Walk This Road (2010)

We Walk This Road - Wikipedia

I picked up a copy of this CD from a second hand rack at Mr V at Semaphore today.

I'm not very familiar with Robert Randolph, the only time I've come across him previously is from a couple of performances he did on the Crossroads Guitar Festival DVDs. I have to admit those are pretty good, so I was quite pleased to come across this album. Just gave it a spin and it lives up to expectations. In the CD notes he explains that he grew up in the House Of God Church where the pedal steel guitar was a big part of the church tradition. He started playing at the age of fifteen, but decided he wanted to take it to a new level when he reached 19 (his words). The music on this album is gospel blues, with songs interspersed with brief clips from vintage recordings by the likes of Mitchell's Christian Singers and Blind Willie Johnson. The album was recorded in 2010 and produced by T Bone Burnett, with musical contributions from Jim Keltner, Ben Harper, Doyle Bramhall, Leon Russell, and T Bone Burnett on guitar. Its quite an enjoyable album, and I wouldn't mind getting a few more of his recordings.

The first clip of Traveling Shoes looks like it is from the recording sessions. The second clip of the same song is from the 2010 Crossroads Concert.

Never heard of her. I will check it out on YouTube.

I hadn't heard her before either. I like English folk revival (EFR), so thought i would give it a go. I like EFR on the gritty side so if Norma Waterson (trad. folk) is 40-80 grit & Sandy Denny (folk rock) is 100-120 grit, then Lura M. is about 240-320....IMO.....

What did think of the album?

I totally missed Radiohead. It was in the midst of all the post grunge which I really wasnt a fan of. Probably worth a listen on Tidal and that probably the one. .
