Optus just helped me make up my mind.

Featured Replies

I went to an Optus store today.  I had this great idea to change my current plan plus a few other etcs, etcs to save about $30+ per month.

Having been with Optus for 20+ years, like many before me, I was hanging in with them because of my long-term Optus email address.

I was chatting to young Harry, who was brilliant.   He said - No problems changing my current Plan to a cheaper one with the same specs.  I would lose Fetch of course (Optus nolonger has the deal with Fetch) but I had other plans for that to keep the wife happy.

Then Harry drops the bombshell.   If I change plans, I will get a new Account number and I will lose my current Optus Email account because Optus is getting out of the email business.     Apparently, this is a great Known Unknown to all those in the Know.    So, I either lose my 20+ year email address now or in 6 to 12 months.

I thank Harry for his great service and retreated.     Several mates have departed Optus recently and gone across to Superloop.   They have been raving about the customer service and speeds.

As soon as I got home, I set up a new Outlook Email Account.  I now have the task of informing 20 years of Internet contacts of the new Email Address.

It will be a pain, but I think it will save me anywhere from $50-$80 per month by the time I bundle our 2 mobiles onto a cheaper NBN plan with Superloop or Aussie Broadband.

I am open to suggestions about the best way to start making contact with all my Internet Accounts.   Also, any thoughts on NBN providers.   Of course I will research the Posts on SNA for that part.

If you have an Optus Email Account then you best start the changeover.

We have used Aussie Broadband for a number of years.  They have been great, no real issues.  Their call centre is here in Oz too.  As for mobiles, we buy our phones outright, as we don't need top of the line new models.  And then we use Aldi Mobile prepaid.  They are on the Telstra network.  We have saved plenty since deciding to not sign up on mobile plans.  We use a Gmail address rather than the one available via Aussie B'band.

Good luck with your transition.

When the time comes,  I will ditched Optus at a heart beat…..they lapse security measures and it seems too hard for them to take reporting scammers seriously.   The corporation I work for has gone to Telstra, and once I hit that report button you don’t seems to see the scammers again.   With Optus, they just don’t care…..  I’ve also been effected by there lapse or security or “no security” and was caught up indirectly where my credit rating was effected.   I spent 8wks getting signed declaration forms and on site cybercrime reports to clear myself of any debts that someone used my details to inherent $thousands in 2 incidents.   Not to mentioned I had to banned credit checks for 12mths.  You have to asked yourself,  how does a $30 prepaid account become a $1600 debt,  and then my details was used to another debt of around $1200 via Latitude Finance that’s now ceased operation.  I hoped they coped the full forces of the law and max fines imposed as  a lesson to companies that lack cybersecurity measures.

Optus' behaviour prior to, during and even after their API breach has been nothing short of disgraceful.

Even last week they were trying to stop the report that they got Deloitte to write as a post incident review being handed over to a class action lawsuit by purporting it to be under legal and professional privilege despite saying when they commissioned it:

Quote

it will "help ensure [Optus] understands how [the data breach] occurred and how we can prevent it from occurring again. It will help inform the response to the incident for Optus. This may also help others in the private and public sector where sensitive data is held and risk of cyber attack exists,"

Their actions during this breach and their incompetence during the network outage that came soon after should put them on anyone's shitlist.

Well that is about 9 hours I will never get back.😵

All day on the PC going through my Password Database, Contacts and Emails to sort out who needs to know about the new email address.

Some were easy and some were a pain.   The Super fund I had to call personally and give up my first born to get the change done.    I guess that’s a good thing 👌 as they do have my life savings.

My Eufy home security wouldn’t change the email address.   You have to register the new address and reinstall all the cameras to it.

Ticketmaster was a classic.    the site would only work with Chrome.   Went through the process and in the end they said they will send a 6 digit code to your email address, to confirm.    10 minutes later it arrived and by then the code box it went in had expired. 🤣    3 times I tried.  3 times it expired by the time the code arrived.    go figure.

I cleaned out my current email boxes.   It is amazing how much rubbish they accumulate.     Stuff from years ago.    A million Kogan and Anaconda emails were trashed.

Still it is all for a good cause.    Very soon I can give Optus the heave-ho and please myself.    I can go with the lowest bidder.

It was tedious but like every good culling, by the end I was very satisfied.   No idea why I put it off for so long.

Well it is now done. 👌   Abit of a process but time and money well spent.

Picked up a Refurbished Fetch box for $129 from JB HiFi.   12 months warranty and looks brand new.    5g to the box.    The money saved will pay for the Fetch box in 3 months.

Finally, I got everything sorted in the land of NBN.   I have put a fair bit of time into my Asus wifi6 router these past few days and got it shipshape and secure for the big changeover.

Culled the Optusnet emails and Outlook seems to be working fine.

Used Superloop's Online NBN purchase system and it worked a treat.    Very User Friendly.   I got the 250mb DL and 1 sim for a mobile.

It was a mere 30 minutes from hitting the send button, until Optusnet dropped out and Superloop kicked in.    I went from 105mb to 270mb DL and saved $52 per month for the first 6 months.    No Brainer.     The mobile uses Telstra wholesale.  SIM is on the way for the same number.     Even with the VPN running I am getting 170mb DL.

Thankyou Optus for the past 20 years.   You were very solid, but alas, you just got greedy.

If you don't hear from me, I guess Superloop is going well.    If it turns to rubbish, I will pick another Provider.    Having choices is good.

Quick update.    I use PIA Vpn.  Over the last 20+ hours, even with the VPN on, I'm consistently getting 260+mb DL via an Ookla Speed test.     That is compared to the initial 170mb DL with VPN on, over the first few hours of connection.

So far so very good.

As an aside, a mate put me onto Superloop.    He has been busy and encouraged 4 other mates to join.    Each time a new mate signs on, they insert his 'Buddy Code' for the referral, and he gets 10% off his NBN price for the next 6 months.

He says it is the greatest thing since sliced bread.  😄

If anyone wants to join Superloop, drop me a PM and I will give you my 'Buddy Code'.  Might as well all pay it forward. 😛

😄 Good old Optus is the gift that keeps on giving.

As per above, I decided to keep my mobile # with them for the remaining 14 months of my 'free phone' contract.    I did the sums, and it wasn't worth paying it out.

Today I received an email from Optus informing me my month by month was going up $3 to $52.  But being the generous souls they are, my data was going up from 30 to 50.     Seeing I only use about 10gb each month, that means SFA to me.

So the revised sums are - OUT Optus Sim, IN Superloop Sim for $30 and 30 gig.

It will be good to cut the cord completely 😛

I set my iPhone up so all contacts, photos and videos are backed up to Google servers also. Makes it easy to switch back and forth between Apple and Android rather than being locked to Apple as they’re not big on sharing data. Apple likes to lock you in by making it near impossible to get your data onto another vendor’s product.

As  along time customer of Optus l have the same problem with email addresses.

l should start the process of swapping to my google email address now.

Still got 18mths of my current contract, which l am happy with and the cost is ok.

Been hearing optus is going to get out of email, could you imagine how much business they will loose.

It will be all the password recovery that get forgotten that will be a pain.

regards Bruce

l did have  a account that wouldnt let me use a google email address.

Yup, which is why you also have an Outlook account….. Which you link to your GMail account. ;)

This might interest a few of you looking for a new Internet provider.

As per above I have been with Superloop for over 12 months.   I have 2 mobiles with them in a bundle account.

I’m on the 250 mb download plan.    Even with a vpn I still get close to 250 as without VPN on, I pretty much get 265 dl according to Ookla.

Superloop sent me an email today.    They are changing their plans and speeds to meet demand and competition.

As of September 13th my DL will go from 250 to 750, for no extra cost.     I will believe it when I see it but happy to take their love any time.

Touch wood……….Their service has been exceptional since I joined them.   Only 1 short drop out in the entire time.

For info I am in Melbourne 5klm from the old GPO.

I think you can believe it.  I'm with Aussie Broadband on a 100mbs plan.  They advised they will up this to 500mbs in September.  And yes no additional charge.  NBN must have changed their wholesale plans.

That's good.  I am on 100mbps fibre to the home.  Hopefully I will get 500 too?

Yes all FTTP 100mbps or above will get a substantial increase in mid September free of charge 👍

It's not only FTTP. I'm on HFC.

From The Age....

What’s happening?

From September 14, NBN is ramping up speed tiers for homes and businesses on fixed-line connections, with many plans set to double or triple in speed at no extra cost to consumers. NBN calls the new speeds a “monumental leap forward for the NBN network and Australia”. The upgrade is unrelated to a deal announced on Tuesday for Amazon to deliver NBN satellite broadband.

In the middle of September, NBN is ramping up speed tiers for homes and businesses.

To be specific (and slightly technical), 100 megabit download plans are going up to 500, 250 megabit plans are going to 750 and 500 megabit plans are going to 1000, with upload speeds also ramping up. These are big jumps and should mean noticeable improvements... As long as you have the gear to take advantage of them. To compare, when the NBN rollout began in 2011, the average household broadband speed was just 9 megabits per second. By the end of this year more than 10 million homes and businesses will be able to access speeds up to 2000 megabits per second.

Who’s getting the upgrades?

The NBN uses different types of technology depending on where you live. If you’re connected to the NBN with fibre to the premise (FTTP) or hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) technology you can benefit from the upgraded speeds. To check what technology your home is currently on, enter your address into the NBN website. Customers on plans below 100 megabits or connected via fibre to the node (FTTN), fibre to the curb (FTTC), fixed wireless, or satellite technologies won’t get the upgrades.

Still no fixedline NBN, it had to be fixed wireless at 21mb max.

Until now that I have Starlink 200+ Just waiting for the correct mount to arrive.

I sat the antenna on top of my car with no set up and hit 210mb

wow!

I have the same issue, I'm hoping that it'll continue for 18 months until I retire, as I use an optusnet email address for work.

It is a daunting undertaking the changeover from Optus, but 12 months later and I couldn't be happier.

Do your research, but all I can add is that Superloop has been flawless for me.

we are rural with no NBN apart from satellite. NBN are changing from their geostationary satellite to the Amazon LEO network, but we have a 4G Optus and Telstra tower 300m from our house so we are currently using wireless 4G LTE that gives us more than enough speed for 4K streaming, although it gets very congested during holidays. I'd be more than thrilled if/when Optus upgrade it to a 5G tower. Otherwise, I'll see what the Amazon/NBN service is like. The main hassle is changing email, and changing logins.

We don't even get Optus 4G Telstra 4G is the only service with any reception.
