More atmospheric music from Iarla o Lionaird, released in 2011. This album is a bit less heavy on electronics than some of his earlier efforts (thank goodness), although there are still effects throughout the album. For the most part they are just used for ambience, although the crackling sounds in 'Daybreak' are totally misplaced. It sounds like somebody sampled surface noise from an LP and added it to this track. Gawd knows why, it almost ruins one of the best tracks on the album.

Having said that, I found this to be quite an enjoyable album, although one does have to be in the right frame of mind to fully appreciate it.

This is one of the more traditional sounding tracks from the album.

I saw Oliver Mtukudzi with his band The Black Spirits at Womadelaide some years ago, and they were fabulous.

A Chinese music CD I picked up yesterday ($5 in a 2nd hand rack).

For those not familiar, the Qin is a kind of Chinese zither.

I haven't had time to play this in its entirety yet, but I have listened to the first 3 tracks. Recorded in Shanghai in 1996, on the Marco Polo label. Most tracks are played solo, except for one track which includes Xiao (Chinese flute), and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra on the last track.

Most of this music is centuries old, and is very reflective in nature. It is beautifully played throughout, and I must say extremely well recorded too (something which I have noticed with quite a number of Chinese traditional recordings). The recording is crisp and clean, with no background noise that I can discern. This is great, the very low noise floor allows one to more easily appreciate the detail and expression in the music.

I searched on YouTube, and found a clip by Gong Yi playing 'Flowing Water'. I'm not entirely sure if this is the same recording that is on this album, but I strongly suspect so.

Debo Band - US outfit playing funky Ethio jazz.

Below is a youtube stream of their self-titled album. I'd recommend a quick listen to the first track, 'Akale Wube'. If Ethio jazz is up your alley...

Debo Band reminded me of one of my favourite tracks of the last year, so I have to put up a link.

Don't know much about Sinkane, but I heard he was the musical director for the William Onyeabor thing in Sydney earlier this year. Anyway, this is a tune...

How about Hugh Masekela  Album Called Hope  Not just a good Album but the recording quality is out of this world

Zhou Cong,

I bought a Dali Demo disc about 36months back with a few other items and discovered a really well recorded and haunting track done by Zhou Cong called "Moonlight on Spring River or Blossom on Spring moonlight " Googling her I can only learn that she is a well known new age Chinese artist and had an album release called "the sounds of China". For almost 3yrs I was unable to obtained this album on CD until I was in Hong Kong a few weeks ago. I found a copy in an audiophile store that sells audiophile CD in the Ladies night Market in Monkok. Brilliantly well recorded and the track "moonlight in Spring River or Blossom in spring moonlight" was recorded with all top line equipment set up according to the Deli literature. If you like traditional Chinese strings you like this, I have used this track to demo and audition equipment because I know it's done really well and have become fimiliar with the sound.
