Ani Choying Drolma. I didn't sleep well last night so I put RN on the headphones and heard some perfect music for a rough night. Anyone familiar with her music and can recommend particular albums? Inner Peace seems like a good start or her first one Cho.

Loving this CD @@mrbuzzardstubble put me on to. I can't get over how much her voice is like Joni's. Such spare quiet dynamic music here. Wonderful Spanish/eastern sounding compositions too.

I was browsing through the 2nd hand junk at the Tea Tree Plaza Savers store yesterday, and came across this CD.

Most people probably wouldn't give this a second glance, but given my predisposition towards Irish music (and the fact that it was only $2), I figured it was worth a go.

I've just given it a spin, and I think its pretty good. It is a 1996 recording of solo harp music, consisting of jigs, reels and airs. Very nicely recorded too, has quite a rich sound with lots of detail. The harp is brass strung, which gives it a rather metallic sound.

This link from his web site gives a bit more information about the harp he plays (he built it himself).

Ali Akhbar Khan - 80 Minute Raga

At least i know what i'm doing for the next 80 mins - helpful if unimaginative title. A sarod master - brilliant.

The downside of vinyl - with a continuous piece like this its a drag to have to turn it over in the middle of a passage of music.

Picked this up at one of those 'palooza' sales a couple of years back.

Sola Akingbola is the percussionist with Jamiroquai. This, however, is an album of traditional Nigerian Yoruba drumming. Its quite an interesting album, with melodic vocal harmonies blending with the drum rhythms. There are quite comprehensive liner notes which describe the principles behind Yoruba drumming in some detail. All the songs have a spiritual dimension, and are described in the notes.

This was a bit different from what I imagined it would be when I bought it, and rather pleasantly so. Yes, rhythm is a key part of the music, as one would expect, but the vocals really add another dimension to it. It combines rhythm and melody in quite an interesting way, which I guess is largely due to the spiritual nature of the music.

Here is a track from the album.

I was hoping that Ludmila Carpio would make it to Melbourne but alas no.

Terry Riley - for @@buddyev - not only recorded, but available in Melbourne.  Surprisingly, it works!  I picked up my copy from the Theosophical Bookshop in Russell St, one of the guys there has an amazing music knowledge that is wider than the shiop's primary customer base.  As a result, things such as this are found in their sale bins.

It's worth checking out their web site.
