an Italian singer-songwriter. Known for his sympathies towards anarchism, libertarianism and pacifism, his songs often featured marginalized and rebellious people, gypsies, prostitutes and knaves, and attacked the Catholic Church hierarchy . Artistically active for almost 40 years and the author of thirteen studio albums, he is renowned for the quality of his lyrics and often considered a poet. He contributed to the promotion of the languages of Italy, most notably Ligurian and, to a lesser extent, Sardinian, Gallurese and Neapolitan. Following his early death several streets, places, parks, schools and public libraries were named after him.

Thanks mello.I liked that last one. :)

Glad you liked the post, but I have to say that Irish music is rather more than just 'diddlydee'. There is far more substance to it than that.  :)

Can I say, I can only take so much diddly diddly too, it has to be good, very good, otherwise....and yes I went through a folk stage myself. There is so much more music out there from around the globe and as a veteran attendee of Womadelaide those in charge tend to be rather conservative in their selections, is it Adelaide? A largish proportion of acts hail from the UK cos we were once a colony of theirs and still tied to their apron strings?  Yes, I know, there's the tyranny of distance, festival budgets, etc. A lot of the acts are also popping up at Port Fairy Folk festival. Give me something more cutting edge.

Hi@@Ian McP

Thanks for the heads up re Schema/Nicola Conte.I've got a few discs on that label and they're all good.NuBrazil 1 & 2 (both doubles) are worth picking up if you like ElectroBrazilian and Taba Sensi(also from Italy)is very good also.Nice packaging on the latter.I've got that Urban Brazil album.Love this track from it.Cheers

does NZ count for world music?

Certainly does. There's been quite a few Kiwi bands perform at Womad over the years.

This discussion has gone from strength to strength of late.Thank you one and all. :)

Un Zud's finest export Fat Freddy's Drop really hit the groove last year at Womad!

herbal inspired?

I'd say so nada.Fat Freddy was one of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. :)

Fat Freddy's Cat, I remember reading the one about headphones, appropriate for stereonet!

Fat Freddy comes home and realizes he's locked the cat inside all day. The cat thinking to himself "wait till he puts on his headphones"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat_Freddy%27s_Cat

< The Cat is much smarter than Freddy, and while sharing many of his preoccupations such as food, sleep and sex, his stories also feature a fair amount of defecation. Like Garfield (whom he predates) he is laid back, but in his personal habits and outlook he is more like the Freak Brothers. However he tends to regard the Freak Brothers with amused contempt, frequently expressed by defecating in inappropriate and inconvenient places, such as stereo headphones. >

A mate of mine had that issue where Freddy craps in the headphones,Ian. :) That was back in '72 or '73 when I read that.Other characters I remember were Norbert The Nefarious Narc and Bobo Bolinski. They were heady days in more ways than one ;)
