iiNet handing off email service to "The Messaging Company"

Reading the above issues is making me realise that I need to prioritise changing my email address.

I was with tpg and changed to TMC and have had no problems yet, but seems like something is not right.

The real problems start , according to those that have thought about changing their email addresses is when having to change the BIG ONES, like you MY GOV details.

Apparently this brings a whole new level of difficulty.

  • As a former iiNet customer, I went to Aussie BB and I haven't had any regrets.

My experience with TMC's security is that it is about 1/10th as effective as Internode's. Also, Internode focussing on its core business is causing disconnections, slow ping times, and more.

I actually complained via email, got the standard "we'll get back to you within 72 hours" auto-reply and haven't heard anything in two weeks. Their service is now a modest 2 out of 10.

I'm afraid that after many years of Internode's high quality service on all levels, that the current changes😡 are going to necessitate a new provider.

It's a bit like that great restaurant that gets sold and the new owners cheap out on ingredients, hire second-rate staff, and try to trade on the previous reputation.🤮

  • 1 month later...

The latest message from Internode reads:

"we will no longer be signing up any new customers to Internode from 6/12/2023. In the future, we will also transition existing Internode residential customers across to the iiNet brand."

So, Internode is virtually no more, and all the great prices and service are on the way out.😧 Sigh. It's really sad to see a once great South Australian company disappear into a non-caring conglomerate.

I guess it's time to look for an ISP that cares.

I got the same message.

Happy to say that I've received no spam, or noticed any difference in my email service. (I changed from Internode to TMS the day before I had to, so maybe they sorted out some wrinkles?).

With this new change regarding internet service, it was good to see this from them:

"As an existing Internode customer, it’s business as usual. Your current plan, the price you pay and the service you receive from Internode will not change.

You can still change your plan, add new services, update your account details, move house, and upgrade to a new broadband technology".

I've been paying Internode just under $50/month for ages now, and it looks like ABB's cheapest rate for me (Fixed Wireless only) is a whopping $85. Combined with $30/month for prepaid Mobile, that's a crazy amount for what I need.

We’ve been readying ourselves to ditch iinet (nee Adam)  after decades of service. Haven’t found it too onerous to set up ; it’s necessary to have a couple of Gmail (or other free email services) accounts so that you can switch things like appleID, myGov (and myGovID app), ATO,  etc. over before swapping to new isp/email service(s).
Changing your email address within myGovID app is easy to change within the app. Once done, and once having setup Digital Identity in myGov you login to myGov using your digital identity (which is your new email).

Yeah .... the key is to set up a GMail account so that this is your business email account and also set up a personal GMail account that is separate.  Then you can say goodbye to iiNet or whoever.  I admit it is a bit of work to contact all the financial entities to change your email account but once this is done you are no longer bound to your ISP.  I don't regret doing  this ....

I’ve never had a problem with Adam/iinet email service, perhaps I’m lucky but I doubt it. I’m only changing ship due to the pushing of customers email to a 3rd party without any guarantee on costs past 12months and that their overall customer service has slowly been deteriorating over the past 5yrs.

The problem with adopting an email with a domain owned by the company is that you're either:

1. locked in to buying that company's service to keep it (typically telcos/ISPs)

and/or ...

2. the security and performance of that email service will wax and wane with the financial health and management of the company (yahoo/Hotmail/Gmail)

You could say that Microsoft (outlook.com and hotmail.com) and Google (gmail.com) are now too big to fail, but after the spam and security issues I had with a Yahoo! account a few years back as the company struggled, I just don't want to depend on these companies for my primary email. Even a great company now can end up going pear-shaped, given a few years.

If you can afford it, I'd buy a domain name (maybe via Webcentral) and use that for your primary email, even if you never plan on using the domain for a website. Avoid buying a domain extension for personal use that requires you to have an ABN (eg, .com.au) - if you change career paths, retire etc and lose your ABN, you won't be able to renew your own domain (I'm speaking from my own mistake on this one!)

Setting up email with your own domain name takes some time (it was a pain in the butt to be honest) but at least once it's done you can port it elsewhere if the hosting company goes south, just like you can your mobile number if you get sick of your telco.

Personally, I'm okay with having a Gmail/Outlook.com as a *secondary* address which some services require you to have, but not as my primary domain for the next 10-20 years.

Google going pear-shaped?!?!   I hardly think so.  Your argument is based on the premise that you can never be 100% sure.  That is true, but I think this is rather an extreme position to take (that you can never be certain).

Anybody else here unable to access (send/receive) emails since yesterday?

The Messaging Company have the below announcement on their website -

"Announcement: We are aware that some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are currently experiencing issues with email access or delays in receiving email. Until your email account is transferred to The Messaging Company, your email is managed by your current service provider. Please contact your current service provider for support."

If ISPs are the issue, then why can't I also access email on my dual SIM phone over the Telstra and Optus networks?

Is the above just a feeble attempt to shift blame away from themselves?

Not today, but I've had this happen in the past.

Maybe two months ago.

TBH I haven't had any problems [As yet] with mitigating my Netspace email address over to The Messaging Company.

My only problem of late has been my online phone suddenly dying, after a ordeal trying to trace the fault whilst talking with iiNet support, and then a further conversation with their Tech support, it was decided it was the WPS section of my modem had died.

They said that will I will be charged for a new modem and it will be sent to me.............I said, Oh no you don't, I didn't break the modem, which was supplied by you, it is faulty, you replace if for nothing [cheap modem anyway, probably costs them $30 when bought in bulk ].

I got the  "I need to talk to my supervisor" thing, then was told they will charge it through insurance and send me a new one in the mail.....I was supposed to get sent a tracking number, but unsurprising I have not received one.

I have immediately started to receive a new batch of "Fishing Emails", which happened the last time I had to deal with iiNet support [based in India]

Thanks @Tweaky

Good to know someone's email service is working.

I had a small issue before with The Messaging Company (not receiving messages from a particular address). All they could come back with was it must be an issue with my ISP.

I've since changed my ISP yet the problem persists. I'm starting to see a pattern here (i.e. blame someone else) so I've decided after 20 years of having my "ozemail" email addresses, it's time to bail. Quite an inconvenience but it seems a necessity.

UPDATE: Email is now back up and running. Just not good enough for me.

Personally I don't buy the official reason/statements from these ISPs/email providers moving business to The Messaging Company.

My guess is that they were "forced" to do so. I'll leave it at that.

What alerted people to the completion of the migration of their email service to TMC?  Was there  confirmation n email from TMC?

All I’ve received so far is a confirmation of registration to move the email service. AFAIK my email is still via iinet.

I thought I’d checkout “Webcentral” since you suggested them and found that they have on-sold the web hosting business.
Issues such as this, or simply a company offering “paid for service” is just as likely to go bust/change its terms, increase its rates as Google or Microsoft changing its business model.
Nothing is certain in this world, certainly not in the ever changing digital world.
The good thing is that once you realise what the “essentials (to you)” are, and how to change the contact/login details, the next time it should be easier.

Webcentral Limited (ASX:WCG) (Webcentral) announces that an
Extraordinary Meeting of Shareholders will be held at 11.00 am (AEDT)
on Thursday, 21 December 2023. The meeting will be held in person at
Cornwalls Lawyers, Level 4, 380 Collins Street, Melbourne.
A copy of the Notice of Meeting and sample proxy form accompanies
this Announcement.
The Extraordinary General Meeting has been called to seek approval
for the Change of the Name of the Company from Webcentral Limited
to 5G Networks Limited.
The Company is required to change its name resulting from the
sale of the Webcentral domains and hosting business, including the
sale of the name “Webcentral”. The name “5G Networks Limited”
appropriately describes the business of the Company going forward.

Exactly the same situation here. My email is still working and I don't know if it has been migrated. There were a couple of rather curious email outages a number of weeks ago that made me think it could be due to the migration, but I have not received any further communication from iiNet or TMC about this since confirmation of my registration.

What a can of worms they've created for us and them I think.

I am with Internode, and did receive notice of the email change to TMC, which I have done quite seemlessly, and have recently received an email confirmation from TMC that my email address has been successfully transferred. I continue to receive emails without any issues.

Now I have a bit of time to look at another ISP. Much will depend on what TMC are going to charge for their service. With Internode, I'm on a plan via our home hybrid cable connection, which gives  me consistent speeds of about 250 Mbps and the price is somewhat cheaper than the equivalent type plan from Aussie or any other ISP I've checked out. Unfortunately this may well change when Internode become iiNet or TPG or whatever in the near future.

I'm still undecided as to what to do with all this -as I said "a can of worms".

Internode normally bill me on the 4th of each month. This month I got no bill.

Yesterday I got a paper overdue notice in the letterbox.

Seems they've lost the ability to use their own email service, or ability to send them through TMC.

Sounds a bit expensive for them, if this is happening country-wide.

Nothing.

I've been waiting for something to confirm the switch for months, not a peep, it just went ahead.

I hasn't happened yet.  I was told the changeover will probably be in December or January.

My hope is that the email service will improve when it does - it's varied from poor to abysmal over recent weeks.

Well the cut off date of the end of November, on weather I wanted to sign up with the Messaging Company, has well and truly been and gone, so I can only deduce that's exactly what has happened.

If it hadn't, I wouldn't be getting any emails tied to my old Netspace email account.

Yes, I also had a similar "cut off date" - I actually think it was earlier than the end of November.  My email service (more like disservice!) is definitely still with Internode.  I was told by the Internode service adviser that there have been ongoing delays and the transition might go into the new year.

My understanding is that we have registered our Internode email addresses with TMG and they will contact us when they are ready to actually move the service to their platform.

Overall, I'm totally P'd off and somewhat sad to see what was once the best ISP in Australia degenerate into the worst and then self-destruct.

I think I read it somewhere that we will be given new account settings when the time comes to change our email programs to use the new servers from the messaging company. Unless you login through a browser perhaps.
