Upgraded HT Build

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. I decided to go Scope (120" accoustically Transparent) from a 100" 16:9 plus new Front stage speakers (Krix Megaphonix In-Wall) x 3 and a pair of In-Room Megaphonix for the main surrounds, system is a 7.1.4 Atmos with 4 Krix Stratospherix ceiling speakers and PSA for Back surround duty, Projector is a JVC N5 4K, Trinnov Altitude 16 processor with Parasound and Electra HD amps. I decided to go with Marc from Superb Cinema Electrical:

https://superbcinema.com.au/about-superb-cinema-electrical-narre-warren/

Today (Tuesday) was day one of two for the upgrade and so far it's looking amazing, and cannot praise Marc and his partner for their attention to detail and workmanship. It's been a seemless transition so far and I'm blown away with how it's looking. Just a few more things that need doing such as a new projector mount and routing of back surround speaker cable etc. We put up an image to make adjustments to fill the image on the screen, the new mount will make this happen today. Will post final pictures tomorrow at some stage as I need to recalibrate the system for the audio tomorrow night.

  • So both subs in place and system calibrated this morning. Excellent result and enjoying the abundance of deep controlled bass. Room is pretty much complete now.

Nice one!

Big fan of Krix HT range, I use megaphonix as well

One question, you didnt want to put sub/s behind the screen?

Hey. No I currently have a Powersound Audio T-18 Subwoofer and its perfect for the current room, with 3 18" Drivers powered by a 4000Watt amp it's more than I need. For the upgrade my focus was to make the front stage cleaner and more like a cinema without having to build a whole dedidcated room which is beyond my budget. I will post more pics once everything is completed as I've got a large black rub (not 100% black) going down as well and will show the back surrounds (back wall) as well as the sub in the front right corner.

Looking bloody good Simon

Do keep the thread going with updates and pictures

cheers Muriwai

Well no subs behind the screen will compete with that monster you have.  Will sound incredible when all set up and callibrated.

One other comment is that the tweeter height of the front speakers looks well above ear level at the seating positions - although hard to tell from pics. I wonder if you would be better off flipping the speakers upside down. While megaphonix have good vertical directivity, tweeter level closer to ear level is always an advantage. Perhaps @Krix Loudspeakers could advise?

I will have a chat to Marc regarding the height but as it stands their currently screwed into the back MDF with 4 brackets per speaker.

It's completed so now all is left is to calibrate. We did end up rotating the speakers upside down so the tweeter was more at ear lvel so thank you Audiogeek for that suggestion. I will post pics after calibrating tonight.

Looks great Simon, thanks for sharing.

I had a similar idea for my new room a while back and because I hadn't seen it done well before I figured it would probably be half assed, this installation has now put it back in the running.

Keen to hear how the Krix sound compared to your PSA's too.

Enjoy!

Hi. Yes I was the same years ago and put in the too hard hard basket, but after talking the Marc it made sense and it was achievable. So glad I did.

These arent the best pics but gives you an idea on the final look. I had to include my partner in crime and rug expert as he was instrumental during whole upgrade, and entertained the installers. I tested some BD's last night that I know well and cannot believe how good the system sounds now, I would say refined, balanced and enveloping. Scope just draws you into the movie and I don't miss the black bars at all. The room isnt complete (cosmetically) and the calibration went pretty smoothly but the Trinnov Mic is pretty sensitive for placement but only took approx 40mins to complete. Also had a nice gentleman from Trinnov who was in Barcelona, login to the Trinnov and look at the results (everything looked excellent) and setup some presets for me, great service from them and wasnt expecting him to be available so quickly. Those speakers in the latest pics are the Megaphonix In-Room speaker currenty being used for main surround duty.

As for comparing the Krix to the PSA's, thats a tough one to answer as I love the sound from the PSA's and they would have benefitted from being installed the way the Krix are but they were simply too deep (size). I will say though after listening to the Krix that they have more detail and punch and sound so uniform but their postioned perfectly where as the PSA's weren't all at the correct height (centre was laying on it's side on the cabinet with the horn rotated to accomadate) and the Trinnov did a fantastic job blending them in. I havent listened to any music yet so will do that today (SACD). I will say that the Krix really do encase you in that bubble of sound and there just effortless in their delivery, very precise and detailed.

Thanks mate. I know it's not a dedicated room but it's so much better and more immersive than before and the room just disappears when watching a movie. I will be installing some black curtains between the kitchen and the HT so I get complete light control (I have roller shutters for the HT windows and curtains).

I did attempt my first Trinnov calibration a week ago and its a learning curve thats for sure, and it's not perfect so I will be getting Andrew from Home Theatre Engineering who did the first calibration when I first got the Trinnov but his is in WA so could be a few months before his in Melbourne. I did perform another calibration since then and he logged in a made some adjustments and tweaks and got it sounding very nice so that will tide me over until he can come down.

Good job indeed! :thumb:

Can you please advise what is the black dampening material between the speakers?

Cheers

Cheers mate.

the advantage of a woven A/T screen, speakers can be close.

looks great and better than their wall of sound solutions which may or may not fit all rooms.

nice touch with the black floor covering, something many seem to forget. i reckon if there is "another person" involved you have a considerate person there, allowing that colour 🙂

Thanks for that. I have the luxury of living on my own so anything goes.

looks sensational mate. I've been getting some quotes to do almost the exact same thing. I have been looking at the Ascendo speakers, but like you, I really like the krix sound.

Outstanding result I reckon

Thanks Corza. No regrets going Krix they sound superb and now I have the screen setup to match the audio thanks to Marc and his team.

Nicely done ! Looks fantastic and no doubt to great end result :)

Hey. Just an update on the setup, as I took delivery of a pair of Megaphonix On-Wall speakers (pair) for back surround duty. Complete overkill but thats how I roll and now the audio side of things is complete (maybe). These are replacing a pair of JTR Slanted 8's which are going to a mate. Big size difference and boy do they deliver the sound. I know they are closer to the main listening position but thats due to room limitations but they are forward of the rear Atmos ceiling speakers as much as can be and the back wall. The front seats are now approx 3.4m from the screen (120"). Calibration has been done and I watched A Quiet Place (first one) and it sounded incredible. The Trinnov really does a brilliant job of blending in all the speakers, but the system does need a professional calibration and that will come after I've sorted out some room acoustic panels to replace existing ones. The journey continues.

Update on the room build. Marc and his tradie came today and installed a wall extension (rear wall)and installed some acoustic panels ( diffusion/absorption)). They look fantastic and excellent job as always . Going to recalibrate tonight and do some listening. If anyone is interested in the Diffusor and absorption panels, here are the links for both:

Next and final ( might get room carpeted) stage is getting the room painted black in 2 weeks.

Hey all. I had the room painted today, just waiting for it to dry before putting back everything. I think it looks good.
