yeah, they operate as L&R surround (centre fronts) with the 7.1.4 end game in mind.

They're THX certified and sound is so spacious they work even though forward of the seating position.

Never seen bipoles used as Front Wides. Wouldn't direct radiating speakers be better as the bipoles will be sending sound forwards to bounce off the front of the room and muddy the front soundfield ?

great write up and project - thanks for sharing.

Well done and have fun tinkering with Audyssey.

Once I got my manual adjustments sorted on a flat curve base that I did at 2.00am in the morning with all potential noise making appliances off, I am locked in and very happy.

Others next door and your housemates not bothered by you enjoying the room with all the treatments?

Clarification, they're Di-poles so apology for any confusion. My idea was to future proof the system with THX / Atmos capability if ever I wanted to go there and this new Magnat Cinema Ultra pair I got for a song. I can easily switch these into being the main L&R surround centre's by simply changing the channel output at the main speaker matrix wall plate, albeit acknowledging that they would be a slightly forward of the main seating position. It's just the tweeters which are out-of-phase, the bass driver faces the centre of the room.  It may not be a technically correct application for di-poles but I find that they deliver extra depth and movement of sound (e.g. helicopters, planes, cars etc) so am happy with the current set up.   (correction: end game is 9.1.4 set up not 7.1.4)

But Atmos (and all 3d sound) calls for direct radiating speakers and dipoles are not recommended by Dolby. Very hard for speakers to place a sound in a 3d location if the speaker is firing off in different directions. My own testing in my room with bipoles certainly backs that up.
