  • Well, a suggestion was made that I try listening to my stereo gear in the front yard.  And since I'm chaffing at the bit for the new room and climbing the walls due to the new room not being finished

  • Well, that Thor does look good, do you know if your power is good, bad or average to begin with?  Have you looked into a humbuster?  brodricj swears by the one he was using.   The room as it stood

  • Well I'm moving down around Nanango way shortly, as I've finally managed to find myself one of those "job" things down there, so I'll just have to see what I can do about re-creating this sound lounge

Getting back to the subject at hand.

Got the power hooked up this afternoon, circa 4pm.  Had the consonance, both Cayins and the S2s set up by 5pm and the speaker, chair and first reflection positions measured, marked out and dealt with by 6pm.  I have to order more acoustic foam, a lot more acoustic foam, but apart from that things are sounding pretty good.

I should clarify, I've only got two double power points hooked up and running but they are the only ones that matter since they are the only ones fed from their own circuit breaker (also installed today) down cable that used to run the smaller (circa 2.8KW) compressor motor that fed the smaller of the two cold rooms.  All the other power points, when I get around to them, will be fed from a small distribution board outside that will itself be fed with the cable that used to run the other (circa 3.2KW) compressor.  Everything being cut back to one phase of course.

I'm a little bit disappointed that we couldn't use the original 50 amp fuse, but I guess I can survive using a new 35 amp fuse, not happy about it since I believe that those extra "potential" 15 amps could make a difference (even if only to my peace of mind) but I can live with it (probably!) .

The pic of the "front deck" during daylight, not so pretty with all that junk strewn around but that'll get cleared up in a week or two.

Kitchen window, the rest of the kitchen will follow on at a later date.

The lounge, currently with S2s, Cayin amps and a cd spinner taking up some of that ample floorspace.

And the front door from the inside.

The Burson Timekeepers have just arrived on my doorstep, (as if I needed any more motivation to get this thing sorted out?) time to kick this new build into high gear.

Foam for the walls and ceiling has been ordered and I'll pick it up Friday or Saturday, the magnetic strips to attach to it won't be here until next week but that's OK, I can hold the foam in place with planks of wood until they arrive.

Hmmm, need bass traps, and a pair of 4m speaker cables from Mike (2.5m just ain't gunna cut it now that my "man-cave" has become a fully fledged grotto), that could take a while...

Oh well, nothing for it but to make do until it's done, once that happens it's monoblocks all round!!!

I'm nearing the home straight on my mancave refurb Jeff just as you enter the first turn at Flemington in yours. Keep up the good work and keep up those pics as we can never have enough.

I have 8 powerpoints wired back to a new board and I'm still deciding whether to pull the pin on the Thor DRM95 for surge protection and noise filtration or go for a cheaper more conventional option which seems to narrow it to some of the clipsal surge filters: What do you think?

The room as it stood this morning at about 9am.

The room as it stands this evening, complete with Timekeepers and Conductor.  It hurts me deep down inside that I haven't plugged them in and cranked them up yet but the cold room construction guys are coming back for a few hours to finish up tomorrow, you can't see their gear in the pic but trust me it is there just out of frame to the right, and behind the camera.  Once they are done I can clean the area up, wire up the Burson-age stuff and enjoy myself just that little bit too much :).  That's all after I spend the next two days pulling off (I should really use the word "removing" there, because if you stop reading after the 'off' it just sounds wrong, so very, very wrong!) all the roofing iron and replacing it with new, far less holey, iron that won't leak anywhere near as much.  Then there's the guttering that needs replacing and more electrical work, but I think I can manage to put that boring stuff off until next week.

Bring on the weekend I say!

Power is average I guess, but we get a lot of storms here and during that season we can get a few blackouts on average.

If I spend money on a refurb I would get that Thor - I am saving up for a dedicated line and one of those. I just like what the Thor guys are doing and I live in "fear" because my house was hit by lightning two years ago. At that stage I did not have all my existing equipment  and lost a pool chlorinator, a modem, a TV and a garage roller door motor.

Picked up a ute load of foam today, even just leant up against the walls it has made a nice improvement to the overall acoustics.  There still appears to be a bit of a treble issue though (there is a bit of an 'aura' around some instruments that is just a bit too bitey for my liking), I think I need to increase my foam-to-wall ratio to compensate.

Some foam that needs unwrapping.

Clark Rubber had a special on foam mattresses, so I bought 4 "pseudo bass traps".  Their effect sure isn't pseudo!

The magnetic strips are in the post, once they arrive I'll glue them to the back of the convoluted foam.

The back wall (or is that the front wall?)

And again on the other side.

Really the back wall.

Need more foam!

Seems like you are putting your acoustic issues to bed Cafad...Rob

Looks like you are making great progress.

Looks like you need a decor advisor though.

The chairs gotta go mate or at least cover it with a sheet or something...

I'm not sure I follow there Luc, chairs get sat on, not looked at.

Maybe Luc thinks the chair should be made from bubinga?

I'm not sure I follow there Luc, chairs get sat on, not looked at.

You've yet to meet the Handbrake but when you do she'll set you straight on decor and how a chair should look. Chairs are for sitting on eh? And not for looking at?

I'd enjoy watching that conversation

Ah, yes, well my listening room is operating without a handbrake.  It may be against convention but it is not against the law (I checked!) and it allows much more in the way of 'lazy' choices.

Caf told me he's luv to find a handbrake -just that in Bowen it's only Mangos :love

That may be true willco, but as I recall we were talking about Nissans and drifting at the time   .

And I don't recall "the forbidden love" being mentioned at all, 'cause that sort of thing jus' don' 'appen up here in red-neck-ville.

Kinchrome have a special on their industrial storage racks at the moment.  I picked up two today, one as a future fathers day pressy and one for the audio room.

Before.

After.

It will actually fit all of my amps!  (they're not all in the picture but if I stack them 4 high I have calculated that they will all fit)  Now that is a storage rack!

Hey mate, do you notice how the afternoon light is shining in and on the Redgums...legendary gear!

So it is.  Do you think that is some sort of sign?

Definitely, most definitely Jeff.

Maybe it's a sign that you need to cover your lazy boy it red gum vinyl?

I don't think they make red gum vinyl.  If they did then Luc would have it everywhere, chairs, tables, wall paper, steering wheel...

It would look pretty good though wouldn't it?

u sure about that caffy boy? a redgum leather chair could only have smoke coming out of it for so long before its ash.

Well, on the upside there wouldn't be a need for a seat warmer!

Really though, I'm not a fan of leather or vinyl seating, cloth is just so much more comfy.

If you had to though...  it would be pretty cool to have a seat covered in titanium or aluminium styled vinyl.  Then you could have the name of your favourite manufacturer embossed on the armrest :).
