Do you take your Computer Audio as serious?

Just curious... what are people running for their audio from their PC's?

Me... the Teac Reference amplifier I spoke about in the Amplifier forum, a pair of Total Recoil Bookshelf speakers, and a Audigy sound card.

Nothing special as mostly it's used for shoutcasting, internet TV and MP3's. Nothing real quality :)

I run a pair of old Auratone's (little 4" buggers would take a 100wrms belting) an isobarik dual 10" sub I made awhile ago, and a modified everyday amplifier.

Goes nicely for a computer system. But if I want to get really loud I pipe it into the other system some people may have seen in the "Pro Audio / DJ Equipment" forum.

I think noise is always an issue in building an what I believe as a value for money HTPC or even just for audio.

You have to spend a lot of time and money to make your PC very quiet.

I think it's important to have a decent sound from your computer (especially if you spend a lot of time in front of it), although it's a long way away till it can ever be your reference system.

I'm currently using a Perreaux SXH2 headphone amplifier (yes, you read correctly, a headphone amplifier :)) to power a pair of Mission M71 monitors. They are small and easy to drive and actually sound surprisingly good considering they are driven by a headphone amp. Works really well as a near-field setup.

What started out as a bit of an experiment/joke with the SXH2 powering the M71's turned out for the best. Unfortunately, I'm still only using my onboard sound, which I think is SoundMAX digital audio of some sort. Although according to their latest update, Perreaux has their SXD2 USB DAC due for release soon. Lemme at it :)

Ystm-100 yamaha computer speakers.

I love these as they have a mdf enclosure instead of a plastic one, inbuild amplifier, 3.5mm phono and rca inputs, removable front grills, port and seperate bass/treble/balance controls.

Oh, and they dont sound too bad either!

I'm very old fashioned (maybe Jurassic even)..........At this point in time I could never see myself using the computer for music. Maybe when you can get true high fidelity out of one, I might consider it.

I guess the reason why I suggested the Metaxas thread is that Mr Kostas is trying very hard to bring digital up to the standard of what came before (ie analogue in all its full-blown stereo glory). An earlier expose by this same man suggested that the computer's hard drive is not restricted in the way that optical transducers might be restricted. He suggested that the hard drive simply accepts digitised info. and if that means 17Hz to 107KHz, then who am I to blow against the wind? The computer is, for me, the bread and butter of life. But I am beginning to see that it is seriously under-utilised. Admit it, Mr Jurassic... you probably use software to better evaluate your own (wonderful looking) sonic creations. Get it?

BTW I am Jurassic but I have learned to not under-estimate the enormous potential of a high-end computer platform. So, ajw, let us drag each other out of the primordial soup and into the 21st century (shudder).

This thread suggests that there are a number of potential suckers... er... I mean budding audiophiles out there, just itching to be enlightened as to the current state of music reproduction. But ajw056 gave away a major symptom of early onset of dementia (umm we ARE in the 21st century! tee hee... darn. There go them teeth again.)

xlarge-nz? Well done for daring to be different! And your idea of using a good headphone amp to drive PC sound is not outlandish. It's class! Keep it up.

I won't go into onboard sound. I think there is big ask of soundcard mfgrs, when some users have multi-thousand dollar hi-fi sytems to compare against $100 soundcards. Most kids I know don't even understand what the big deal is! Their multi-gig MP3 riddled hard drives do them just fine! Music rocks...

I mainly use headphones, cheap Philips ones, for my computer audio, running off a SBLive 5.1 card. I used to use 5.1 for gaming and the like, but in the end I decided it took up too much room in my bedroom, so now am back to headphones :)

I listen to a lot of music from my computer though, so maybe I should get something halfway decent for the sound off it. But then, I wouldn't get the same comparative wow-effect when turning on my HT system :)

Oh ****!,what the hell was that.

Suppose it's a good way to keeep to bowels supple.

Iv'e got a spercificaly speced HTPC i built, connected to a surround amp for the shake the house down stuff running with a projector, haven't used it much lately to be honest.[might fire it up for hitchhikers DVD or the double disc CASINO I bought today]

PMC TB2+S monitors through a Cyrus 8vs intergrated Amp. Source from my PC (either WAV or Apple lossless) through a M-Audio FireWire 410. But I also have a cyrus CD 6 for normal listening but I stuff around alot with the PC music. My dream is to setup a nicely functioning mini studio and get some tracks down with mates.

Alternative is using my HD650s through the 8vs/CD6.

My computer set up is a Clevo d900 laptop (2 gig ram, 7800gtx gpu, dual 60gig 7200rpm drives in raid 0, 17", built in tv tuner) with an Audiology 2ZS for sound going into either a SXH2 Perreaux and HD600 Senns, or an old Technics "New Class A+" thing and 780 Missions depending on the time of day.
