I hope this is ok to post here. I ran a couple of searches and couldn’t find any similar threads.

I’m seeking opinions from those who buy records from stores in other States. I generally prefer to buy local but there are limited options in Perth and some stores in other States tend to have some good deals.

I’ve avoided buying from other States to avoid the possibility of having to deal with returning/replacing faulty pressings or shoddy packaging when posting etc.

I’m tempted to buy a couple of records from Goldmine Records as I haven’t been able to find the records locally and I want to avoid Amazon if possible.

So, what stores from other States (including Discogs stores) do you use that offer great service?

+1 Discrepancy Records, great packaging. I'm in Central Queensland and haven't had an issue yet with packaging.

Edit: JB HIFI on the rare occasion, as there are no record stores up here.

Strange World Records - for unique artists

Ebay from selected sellers

Discrepancy are good but do find that their prices are generally higher than elsewhere. Good to use when they have sales on though.

@Full Range I haven’t heard of Strange World Records but will be checking them out now. I haven’t really checked eBay for record sellers but I should check it out.

@DDZIP I have Dutch Vinyl saved as a favourite but haven’t used them yet.

At the risk of stating the obvious (probably) Discrepancy does include postage with their prices, hence the higher prices. I kinda like how they do this, as it avoids an extra step thru the checkout.

I’m a member of Waxx Lyrical record club, they are really passionate about vinyl and music in general. They have a store if you don’t want to join the club. Ben also works out of the Catalogue Music store so have access to a lot more records and also second hand vinyl as well.

Midland Records has a really great range, was in there yesterday afternoon and it was really pumping.👍

Yeah, Midland Records has a great selection. I'll check Waxx Lyrical out. That's another site I haven't heard of.

I understand that but it doesn't work out in our favour when you want to order a few records. Most stores offer a deal on postage when ordering more records.

From several known and trusted sellers on Discogs.

I have it set up so that they notify me if something in which I have expressed an interest, becomes available. These days due to budget constraints I buy used ( but VG+ or better ) because the new prices for vinyl LPs are, quite frankly, a huge rip off.

I agree the prices for new vinyl is ridiculous. I'm now at the point where I only buy when they are reduced. I do buy the odd occasional second hand record but have had some shocking experiences, and some Discogs sellers are not keen to help when you get sent a record that is not as described.

My last experience was when I ordered a NM (both sleeve and record). The record had quite a few hairline scratches and required a good clean, the sleeve (gatefold) was stuck together and looks to be have been like that for a very long time. When I contacted them they offered to refund 50% of the price (not incl. shipping). Discogs wasn't much help either.

It's good to know there are decent Discogs sellers out there though.

Excluding a couple of RSD purchases several years ago, my go to record retailing chains are op-shops.  Occasionally I will buy from an independent at a garage sale.

Discogs

Discrepancy

I use JB a lot as my son is a manager so the prices are too good to knock back.
eBay

I just realised I buy too many records 😂😂

If you want good packaging and want speak to a person knowledgeable about various pressings then go to Audiophile Reference Records in Nunawading/ Melbourne/ Victoria.

Discrepency, Goldmine, Birdland and JB Hi fi are others that I’ve purchased from.

I’ve purchased a lot from Rarewaves  - UK based store - good prices. Shipping is excellent price - much cheaper than within Australia!!

I’ve been a customer of Goldmine for years and they’ve always been great; I usually visit in person, and I’ve found some treasures there, including last year when I found a record I couldn’t find on Discogs (or elsewhere).

I’ve only had records shipped a couple of times from them, and they packed them well. On one occasion, one record arrived warped, and they took care of me.

Haha. I think we may all have that problem.

Thanks, I'll check Audiophile Reference Records and Birdland out.  I've used Rarewaves a few times. I agree they have some good prices, mind you I haven't seen them run many sales like they did early last year.

Dutch Vinyl Melbourne (accurate used vinyl grading) and a couple of trusted Discogs sellers for used vinyl. SoundOne in Subiaco for new vinyl and a few select bits of used vinyl. Just ask Zat, the owner of SoundOne, and he can usually find new vinyl you might be looking for at acceptable prices.

Red Eye, ERC, Presto Music and Acoustic Sounds. Occasionally Bandcamp, direct from the artist and for soundtracks, At the Movies.

Couple of others for you to check out:

Thornbury Records (great for indie releases), Resist Records (punk/hardcore specialist, but also have great prices on more popular indie releases), Juno in the UK are very well priced and the shipping is faster than ordering from anyone in Australia (figure that out!), Happy Valley (great range and preorders, but their prices tend to be on the higher end), Jet Black Cat in Brisbane.

+1 for Dutch (best record store in Melbourne), their second hand range is second to none

+1 for Strange World. If you want harder to get rock/psych release, go here

Thank you to everyone who has recommended some stores.

For those of you who aren't in WA I can recommend Urban Records, Shari-Vari, Midland Records and Dada Records (Dada only has a Discogs store). There are a couple of others but they don't have websites.

I can't comment on their shipping as they are all located within a reasonable distance so I never have to order online.

I don't care where my LP's come from as long as they're NM or new but the following is in order of purchase frequency:

-Discogs - traditionally from Europe but lately from some trusted sellers in Japan and one in China, who sell second hand Japanese pressings at great prices and the postage is cheap and delivery is much faster than from Europe.

-My local 'Vintage Bazaar' - great for second hand LP's at very reasonable prices.

-Ebay - only from trusted sellers - have to be more wary here.

-JB Hi Fi - not too much, just occasionally from the bargain bin - generally they charge way too much.

-Rarewaves - occasional purchases, generally good prices and cheap postage and they have a 'vinyl under $10' section.
