I find all the Zema Estate wines to be great value.

Especially the Family Selection. Fabulous wine at a decent price.

Mr Riggs The Gaffer Shiraz punches above its weight. I have found generally McLaren Vale to be good value for some very good cheaper Shiraz. They can be a little higher in the tannins (and sometimes the alcohol) ... but if you like that style in Shiraz....I'd recommend you check out that region...enjoy:)

The 2012 vintage from McLaren Vale is going to be on of the best ever for Reds, perfect conditions. Many of the wineries are clearing out stock and I recently bought some 2006 shiraz cleanskins for $90 which are drinking like a $40-50 bottle. Don't ignore cleanskins from this region as wineries over produced and some exports did not occur. The cleanskins are generally very good and very cheap, just avoid the crappy 2011 vintage. If you are into reds dont ignore Grenache, Tempranillo and Pinot Noir, I find that these slightly lighter wines are very refreshing and the wife/girlfriend may also enjoy them rather than a gusty red. 2010 was also a good vintage, 2009 was a bit hot but most other years not too bad. For those who dont know the region the wines come from Blewitt Springs, McLaren Flat, McLaren Vale and Willunga and are usually very good value.

Grapes come from Lyndoch old vine Shiraz owned by a 6th generation Lyndoch family. This site lies in Rowland Flat along the foothills behind the original plantings by Colin Gramp. The Shiraz fruit once supplied Grant Burge for his Meshach…a truly flavour punch site. Greenock site which is surrounded by Grange Shiraz..not his block though..it was full of plums, peaches and apricots..up rooted they went and in went Grange cuttings from next door. It’s a remarkable block for its youth. Old vine Angaston Shiraz owned by a 4th generation Angaston grape grower. This site lies along side Henschke sourced old vine shiraz fruit. This fruit for many years supplied Barossa Valley Estate for its E & E Shiraz…it’s a super site with thin soil of iron stone. Veronique

Sorry, but that spiel is pure bullshit. Grange cuttings....

Some of my faves:

Tahbilk Shiraz 2006 (picked up for $16)

Ingoldby Shiraz 2009 (picked up for $10)

Sevenhill Indigo Shiraz 2008 (picked up for $16)

...Yes don't ignore the cleanskins..Cleanskins are just "unbranded wines". It's a way for the wine makers to rid themselves domestically of oversupply. We are talking CHEAP right? So generally <$10 to $15 a bottle. We have had an oversupply of wine production for some time now. Varous factors at play for that -- but yes cleanskins can be "drinkable"...buyer be aware --- to a price

Sure it is but IMO this is a good shiraz for < $20.

Lake Breeze Bernoota - an excellent example of Langhorne Creek wines, and a nice variation to McLaren Vale, Barossa and Connawarra reds. About $18. Fairly reliable across vintages.

Yep the black label Coonawarra Cab Sav is very reliable, a bloody good wine and a decent price. Well worth getting.

Summerfield reserve, nectar

At Dan Murphy's, Cookathama Shizaz (Nugan Estate) a big bold wine and I think it's stunning at the 13.29 price. Have a look at it here >>> Shiraz at Dans current vintage is 09 but I've been grabbing them from my local Dans and they have 07/08 which is great value.

Tried this for the first time late last year on a flight to or from (oh forget now). Anyhow it was the 2010 vintage, and whilst young was IMO somewhat more fruity and more quaffible than the 2008. Unfortunately my local DMs doesn't stock it and I haven't spotted in any other liquor outlets in Perth. Anyone who knows who's stocking it in Perth, feel free to chime in.

Cheers,

Alan R.

Best wine I've had under $15. Have paid as low as $6 a bottle (per 6pak) from bws when it's on special, usually about a tenner.

Agreed there peacewise. Always have a few on hand. Their Cab Sav isn't a bad drop either. :thumb: For the price it certainly is good drinking.

Cheers,

Alan R.

Now here's the thing: just like audio, tastes can vary substantially. I recall Nicks also recommended this, so on the strength of both recommendations, I bought a bottle, but i won't be buying another. To my taste buds, it was rather flat and harsh.

Does anyone know if there are any web apps for wine that use clustering like the ones that have been around for recommending films and the like? That would be useful!

What, no mention of Claymore Wines Clare Valley "Dark Side of the Moon" Shiraz.................big, black and peppery, it is hard to beat. Around $30

No other Shiraz that I've found under $100 comes close in my opinion.

But that's just my opinion!

Shiraz at $100 a bottle- that would be like paying $200 for a pair of interconnects.................

a glass of Wyndam Langhorn Creek poured thru a Vintrui as we speak........
