What to do in Adelaide?

Featured Replies

We're flying down on Tuesday for Xmas in Adelaide, will be there till Boxing Day and I was wondering if any locals had some ideas on places to go; Drink, eat, drive to etc, I'd like to buy some Clare Valley reislings too.

We're going to be staying at Glenelg in apartments somewhere in Durham St according to the boss.

I haven't booked it in yet but I want to go to VAF and listen to some speakers (spoke to Phil via email a while back and he said he'd be open bar the public holidays) and is there anywhere else I could go to have a listen to speakers (as long as they don't get grumpy at a tyrekicker:()?

Cheers Lee

  • I just said sex out loud six times and all I heard back was "I've got a headache", "go away", "are you for real", "too tired", "we've just got over Xmas" and "eat your dinner" AND that was me answe

  • G'day L, You'd be most welcome to come up for a geezer at a pair of Wyndhams CH1s plus a half decent espresso (if I do say so myself!). Or wine, beer, smoky single malt......

  • Hills hifi crawl? Maybe an hour or so here and then off to the tin shed!

I'm a bit full on before XMAS LUC and I too have to go to CLARE before Xmas, (not for wine ) so can't extend an invite to the Grumpy house unfortunately.

Try giving KRIX a call for a visit and maybe Adelaide speakers too- both not too far from Glenelg

Enjoy your stay and merry Xmas

Luc,

You are more than welcome to drop over to my place 1 night next week for a few beers and a listen to some music if you like. Will even come and pick you up and drop you back off. PM me if your interested in catching up.

cheers, Adam

Thanks Grumpy:D Neuphonix we're my original idea for speakers until I came here and now I'm caught up in this disease that everyone here seems to suffer from...what's behind that door I'll just have a peek..wow I like those...what about those ones and those..look at them...

It is fun though.

Merry Xmas to you too.

Hey thanks Adam, I'd not wish to impose and I'm a bit wary of meeting SNA members as I'm a career noob and my lack of knowledge is not something I like to display:(

You would be welcome at my place too luc, we don't bite y'know B)

Other than visiting speaker places, I'd highly recommend heading up into the Adelaide Hills and visiting places like Stirling, Bridgewater, Aldgate and Hahndorf. Beautiful part of the world and less than an hour's drive from Glenelg.

McLaren Vale ain't half bad either.

Adelaide is a nice town. Compact and easy to get around. Everything is nice and close. You should defintely visit the markets (can't recall what they're called - Queen Vic?) and Hahndorf. Dunno if Muggleton's General Store still exists, but they cook an excellent lunch. Compared to Sydney, beaches are ho-hum, but a trip to Adelaide would be nothing without going down to Glenelg. Defintely visit VAF if they're open. Whilst the chocolate is only very so-so, a visit to Haigs is interesting. Probly won't be open though.

Some very nice systems up in the Hills too - where are the Hills dwellers lately?

I should of planned this better and maybe got a GTG going.

Zaph the market you mentioned is called the Central Market... and it's definitely worth the visit. Amazing food. Right in the CBD. You can catch the tram from Glenelg.

If you are going to VAF there's a pub right around the corner called the Tap Inn you have to go to. Amazing venue that has its own indoor driving range. Its won countless awards.

Other pubs on the must visit list -

The Earl of Leicester in Parkside

The Edinburgh in Mitcham

The Wheatsheaf in Thebarton

Seacliff Beach Hotel in.. Seacliff. Great view of the sunset over the water from the balcony.

What gave the game away that I like a drink? B)

Didn't know there we trams in Adelaide that's a plus, knowing the wife that's why she booked in Glenelg then.

I've had some nice meals at Seasons at the Bay. Located on Anzac Hwy. Walk north along Durham, hang a right at the end and it's a couple hundred metres on your right (opposite the Watermark Hotel)

I would reccomend getting an entre as well as the mains aren't big serves. Very nice though.

As tempting as the Buffalo retaraunt might be (the old sailing ship), I've not heard any positive reviews of that place. Heard many negative ones though.

There is a string of eateries in the marina too. Although I'm unable to offer any guidence here it's definately worth a look. Again it's within easy walking distance from you.

If you decide to visit Adelaide Speakers I should warn you to be prepared. It is merely Edwards very humble abode. There is no showroom to speak of, simply what ever speakers he is working on at the time in his very humble lounge / listening / store room / workshop. He is only 10 mins from Glenelg. I've found him to be a very pleasant fellow, very knowledgable & passionate about speakers. You will need to give him a call first.

BTW Luc you keep saying glenelg back to front.B)

Just realised. Hopefully I will be going to Vaf next week to pick up my Oppo Bluray player. If you would like a lift over there and back PM me your number and we may be able to work something out. Unfortunately I only have room for one as I drive a ute. I'm only 15 mins south of the bay (local speak for Glenelg), so no trouble. I'm available pretty much all day Wednesday & Thursday.

Haha, very clever, never realised it was a palindrome. I posted that from my phone so maybe the phone was back to front...;)

Hey luc how are you getting to Clare ?

Do you know it's about a 2 hr drive away?

Thanks for the clarification. The Central Market is very good indeed. Melbourne has one, Adelaide has one, Sydney doesn't (Paddy's doesn't even rate, by comparison).

This has reminded me of a story from a guy I used to work with. He had some rellies come over from the UK who were going to do a day trip to Ayres Rock, from Adelaide by car LOL.

Might hire a car or borrow one of the rellies cars for the Clare trip if I get the time but between pub crawling/food/speakers/rellies there mightn't be much time.

One of the brother in laws is the Prez of Glenelg footy club or some such plus he runs a business that does pokie machine tracking for pubs+clubs so I know he's in thick with publicans and winery owners etc so he might have a spare car and clue me with some info.

Ah yes that's Rob Mullarvey. Well known in the pokie industry. He will be able to sort you out pub wise.

Eating:

Melt, Hyde Park

The Pot, Hyde Park

Assagio

Manse, North Adelaide

Press, City

Appelation at the Louise, Barossa.

Enjoy your stay!

Ah, you know the little bugger then:D we're down there for his 50th and xmas as well.

Thanks for those Ted, I'll try and go to at least one or two of the pubs mentioned so far.

This one's still here, Grumps - hibernating and waiting for summer. Might get washed away down to the plains any minute now.;)

Enjoy your stay in Adelaide, Luc - some good ideas in this thread for things to do and places to see. Please let us know if you're likely get up Hahndorf way.B)

Cheers

No.

No.

One of the things about going to Adelaide is to enjoy 40c days over Xmas, I'm leaving the mouldy wet damp overcast thoroughly grey and cold sub tropics for this. Say it aint so!

Edit: Thanks Tony will do:D

Edit number two: If i get anywhere near your place, don't I have to bring a set of 401's or something to add to your collection?...
