What do you think of the FET phono stage?

Have tried many combinations over the years including SUT into a valve phono and SUT into FET phono stage.

AndyR's phono was a prototype of a circuit I had and used for years. Andy did a lot of work and development

on the circuit and it just sounds great. I do like my valves but the FET approach is most suitable IMHO for phono

stages in both MC stepup and the actual phono stage.

I use a Rega Fono MM, soon to be upgraded, after i finally get my new turntable

Upgraded to what? Maybe this thread will give you ideas or do you have something in mind?

So far quite a variety of phono stages, with a few using the inbuilt PS in the preamp. I guess there is a lot to be said for simplicity. Personally I don't have a lot of experience in phono stages, but did recently try out an ME 25 and used its phono stage which was remarkably good.

1:100 silver wired stepup into silver palladium output leads into valve mm stage. stepup weighs 4 kgs, channel balance runs at 0.05dB and frequency response of +/-0.25dB 20Hz to 20kHz. cartridge is 0.05 mV output, titanium cantilever, alnico magnets, silver coils, needs a high gain stepup hence 1:100. sounds okay.

Tom Evans Micro Groove Plus X. Will soon be in the classified, as my Tom Evans Mastergroove is on his testing bench. Tom told me the change up was like going from a Honda Civic to a Koenigsegg CCXR SE, so I'm pretty excited!

Are you going to put that detail in the classified?? :-)

I have just bought a ASR Mini Basis, and it is absolutely fantastic, soundstaging, bass and sheer presence of vocals are all outstanding.

Not quite the same setup as cheekyboy but I am very happy with my Graham Slee Era Gold V and Elevator both using PSU1 (though I use the green option on my Slee headphone amp which is where I started my Slee journey).

Did you have an opportunity to compare to your Nighthawk? What did you think of the comparison?

It should be noted that Graham gave me the original circuit (which came out of, I think, Silicon Chip in the mid '80s) over 2 years ago. So I built it and, while it sounded good, I subsequently found its RIAA didn't measure very well - rolled off at the top and the bottom. So I spent 2 years finding out how to correct this. :)

Compared to my main phono stage (Mike Kontor's "Phantom Audio" (now, sadly, unavailable) which had a new, Hugh Dean-designed power supply, which vastly improved it :party ), the JFET phono stage was better in some ways and worse in others - in particular, slightly less top end 'air'. Jaspert later confirmed this by an extended listening test, comparing it to his K&K and his Allnic; the JFET phono came out slightly behind the Allnic - which is not a bad result at all. :P

As Graham is aware, version #2 of the phono stage is now underway ... which will correct a number of shortcomings - in particular, the lack of top end air. So stay tuned. :o

Andy

Heavily modded Jasmine (changed all signal path resistors/caps, precise RIAA resistors/caps and input loading resistors/caps) which become a better amp now, is it still a Jasmine?

AQvox, Doge 8 (phono), Nightawk

For MC cart, using the Pioneer H Z1 as the head amp.

No expensive stuff here

How do you find your modded Jasmine vs. the Doge 8 phono stage, TLL? :)

Tube only, Herron VTPH2 and YS-Audio Concerto SE Plus.

How does the Concerto SE stand up to the Herron?

I've owned a YS Audio pre in the past, but have not tried their phono pre amps.
