  • Well, I had a real "f#ck me dead" moment last night. I changed my Johnandchris1 eBay seller pure silver speaker cables for a pair of Aurealis Litz 201 cables which I'd been using in my second system a

  • As mentioned earlier...  Latest arrivals...   Picked these babies up yesterday, for the princely sum of $50, on Gumtree...   Energy Speaker Systems Connoisseur Series C-5

  • good choice matty, the Aurealis cables do good things,i use the 303 speaker cable and R1 dragon litz both single ended and balanced in my system and very happy with the results?

Well, after adding an OCXO clock and tweaking various cables things are even better. Ended up with Bill's Western Electric master clock cables and will be trying the WE USB cables tonight.

I did run a frequency sweep the other day and noticed that I do in fact have a number of null points in the frequency range. Seeing as I only run digital content via Roon these days, I will eventually get around to running room correction and see how that works out.

I also plan to get a Tortech Balanced Isolation Transformer from Peach Audio soon which in theory should give me the sound I get late at night, any time of the day.  :)

I hope it does, Matt ... but I suspect, unfortunately, it won't.  :(

(As the reason power is so much better late at night is a combination of:

  • industry (like arc-welders) is not 'on' at night, and
  • solar power inverters are not working.

But things (like SMPSes) will still be working and can generate hash on your mains; AIUI, hash just goes straight through an isolation transformer into the secondary windings.  IOW ... you need a hash filter to get rid of it - high-current for an amp, low current for a source component.

So Andy, it sounds like you are saying that the high frequency stuff WON'T be filtered out by the Common Mode rejection performed inside Matty's split circuit inversion/cancellation process.

So, where do we buy hash filters and how much are they?

Thanks!

Whoa there T - Matt referred to it as a "Balanced Isolation Transformer" ... not a "split circuit inversion/cancellation device"???

My comment was about an isotran - not a split circuit inversion/cancellation device!  (Whatever that is!   )

I buy mine from Fuseco in Moorabbin - in 1a, 6a and 10a versions (depending on the component they're being used with.  But then they have to be put into an earthed case - with an IEC socket for mains in ... and a round, panel-mounted mains socket for power out.  So not just 'plug n play'!

PM me if you're interested.

Well that wouldn't play with a balanced isolation transformer would it?

Hmm...then again it could go before the isotran.

so not sure if you realised what Matty had bought in that case?

I have an Iso tran, but matty's is balanced. I used some license to describe it haaaaa, but thats what it does.. I think 🙂

thanks for info on hash filters, I'll buy one, coz... why not haaa!!

Thanks as always @andyr 🙂

This is what I'm getting.  I've had some success with a Furman AC210 AE, though I remain really curious about these things and it's an itch I need to scratch:

https://www.tortech.com.au/three-phase-custom-transformer-designs/balanced-transformers/

I became super curious after reading about this Aurealis Audio unit. Unfortunately due to the cost of certification in Australia these will never be made available here:

http://v2.stereotimes.com/post/aurealis-audio-balanced-isolation-transformer/

So my choice is between the Tortech unit and this one from Musical Paradise.  The Tortech is certified in Australia which is a nice advantage though it only has a single output. Speaking to them they've advised to run a power board from it

this is where I was getting my info:

maybe Ive misunderstood the process, but hey, if I learn something then its all good

if Balanced Power Supply is just a fancy name for an IsoTran then its all good, coz I have one of those already 🙂

I don't believe so.... The regular old Tortech Isolation Transformers are cheaper.  There's a difference. I don't particularly understand it though.

Nono - a balanced transformer is one step up, AIUI.  :)

But still not sufficient to remove the HF stuff that you were worried about earlier, is that what we are to make of all this, Andy?

Maybe I can piggyback my Furman AC210 AE off it?

My real problem is actual noise coming through from outside the house.  We're close to two busy roads here.

Not sure, T (iow, I don't know what "balanced" actually delivers).  Like many of these things ... it needs to be tested.

I shall be the guinea pig. I don't know that my system even needs it or will see a benefit.  No harm trying though. ;)

I'm not looking at trying it to address any seeming issue as my system is already perfectly silent..... It's more wanting to try it and see what it does (if anything).

I rather suspect the biggest improvement I can get will cost nothing..... Basically using Roon's DSP for room correction. I've bookmarked a guide on how to do that and will get to it eventually  :)
