I'm heavily into metal/heavy rock/alternative.. but this band, Portishead are STILL one of my ALL time faves. Something about her vocals.. and those beats combined.. Still awesome after all these years. I still remember when "Dummy" came out. and I bought it on vinyl from Central Station Records in Melbourne when it first came out:)

Yeah me too, and for a mix of vocals+beats+rock I remember first hearing Dissolved Girl for the first by Massive Attack during The Matrix and my response.. Whoa!!

Could check out Abbe May, some of her songs/vocals have a Portishead vibe, this youtube reviewed as a "fresh sexy twist on Portishead"..

Abbe May - Disney On Acid

Great thread for more trip-hop is here - smooth electro stuff - another excellent album is Sneaker Pimps  - Becoming X.

Sigur Ros: Agaetis Byrjun

CD

I'm not a huge fan of the band.............but do love this one.

An amazing album, Svefn-G-Englar and the Radiohead's Pyramid Song are two of my favourite songs, and the one I think people should make sure they hear first. Based on all the rave reviews I listened to () first which is quite a demanding confronting listen, and I hated it. It wasn't until being recommended the Heima DVD that brought me back round to the band and now I really enjoy them and ().

Love this on first listen. Electro ambient rock music, sounds unusual but it works so well. Great album, need to find more of their stuff

Yeah great album, really can't go wrong with any of their albums.

Gave Fractions another spin the other day, though Somersault and the last one are bandied around more I thoroughly enjoy it. Also has an amazing triple consecutive run towards the end. There was a thread here somewhere on favourite 3 consecutive songs but buggered if I can find it. Anyway..

Remanie

To Die

Shining Path

Tying these 3 posts together, it is a crying shame that for her solo gear Lenka went very poppy, I have listened to a half a dozen of her songs and all are very similar. I would have loved to hear her doing more like this, perhaps really out there trip-hop or something like (), layered soundscapes with her using a made-up language so I am not distracted by the words, just her amazing voice.

ARETHA FRANKLIN - Amazing Grace 2xLP

THE classic gossip LP!

Nah. Esme Watson's debut album is the definitive gossip LP, in my opinion.

Enjoyed that Abby May track, does eh manage to hold it together over a whole album?

Don't think that track is on any Abbe May album that I know of. Stylistically her albums are quite variable, but her earlier albums such as 'Howl and Moan' are quite similar to this track.

can recall.

Copped some flack before for my Portishead comparisons :P But here is another eg. from the album, though not indicative of the album as a whole just those two tracks really..

No Sleep Tonight

I love Design Desire, great album. Yet very different to her earlier work.

Thanks also for explaining the availability of the track on the b-side, I might try to find a copy.

Yeah odd really a B-side, what is this the 80s??

Even odder is that I never tried to track it down myself, lemme know how you go, not a vinyl junkie so not sure how I can get it.

Awesome, Jesco. I love this album. "Tropical Hot Dog Night" is one of my favourite songs by the Captain.  I'd love to get it on LP.

Yes, I only have the CD myself... one day I'll have to do something about my lack of The Captain on vinyl.

These three are ch-ch-ch-chained together with Sharon Van Etten's Tramp LP. Aaron Dessner from The National produced the Tramp LP, it features performances by members of The National and Zach Condon, from Beirut.
