racing sim setups

@Marc How did you go with Pimax in the end? Did you find going back to the Pimax Crystal Light a big backwards step from the Super?

I've finally solved the tracking problem on my motion sim by using one of the hand controllers as a tracking source, hard mounted to the sim so it moves with it. I also had to dial down the motion and engine vibrations, but it was worth it to achieve the stable tracking.

Combined with the latest version of AS Evo it's a revelation. I'm practicing for the first NLS race in March next year and it's turned the sim into a proper training tool rather than just a game. It's taken a while but it's finally there.

  • I went a little bit silly a while back and took over the kid's toyroom, much to their disgust. This started out as a way of getting them used to driving, whilst also giving me some thrills from time t

  • Hopefully with all this sim stuff I'll be able to get back to the real thing sometime next year..   Photos below for fun and interest - feel free to remove if too far off topic @StereoNET

I went back to the Crystal Light but what I noticed more than anything was the smaller FOV, rather than a change in graphics quality.

Pimax, after much jumping up and down from me eventually sorted the refund. I'd already purchased another Super locally and am back to using that. With the 5090, and as much stuff maxed out as I can, I am loving the increased FOV and solid 90Hz frame rate. Don't think it can get much better unless they enable and find a way to give us 120Hz.

Maybe my motion is dialled down more than yours, as I did the hand controller mount at one point too but found it made little difference for me. I'm still too busy trying to get out of rookies to delve away from iRacing at the moment. My problem is I have the speed to compete at the very front, but I need to learn patience and not overtake just because I can. I'm much faster than most of the field, but keep getting tangled up in the stupidity of those that will likely never leave Rookies.

Interesting - I was wondering if the larger FOV would make a big difference. I've got the 5090 though also wasn't sure if it had enough power to drive the additional pixels of the Super. Either way, I really should stop looking at upgrades and just work on learning the ring off by heart. 🤣

I do believe they have improved the firmware on the hand controllers to allow for better tracking. I'd recommend trying it again if you're having issues as it solved all of mine for now. I didn't have any issues on an 80min stint after getting it working.

Racecraft is the next step after nailing lap times on a circuit. It's fun, and can be very frustrating but luckily not expensive to learn on a sim. I've found that on my local track here in Perth, while my race craft is ok, in doesn't stop others from crashing into me and damaging my car. It's gotten too expensive lately - at my last race meet I won the first two races by over 10 seconds, however got mixed up in the crowd on the start of the third race and made it 4 corners before someone took me out - sideways into the rear of the car. A new wheel and suspension arm later my wallet is much lighter for an incident that I couldn't even see coming. It's not the first time so I'm giving up racing locally and focusing on some overseas stuff that will hopefully feature a more skilled pack to race with.

I'd definitely recommend spending some time with the most recent AC Evo update - it's really good.
