Administrator StereoNET Posted December 2, 2024 Administrator Posted December 2, 2024 How do VR headsets go with spectacles? Wearable?

I wear spec's [Short sighted and astigmatism ], I can only comment on the SONY VR Helmet V1, I tried it with specs, and you can do it, but I think it depends on a large extent on the shape of your specs frame on how well it works, it wasn't comfortable for any length of time. TBH I ended up just taking my spec's off, and the VR helmet seemed to work fine, I suppose that's because the actual screen is only a couple of mm's away from your eyes, so any failing eyesight issues are minimized to a point of not being relevant 1

I've worn glasses for reading/computer most of my life, but only recent am struggling with closer up so multi-focals are going to be on the cards soon I think. But I wondered whether I could get away with no glasses at all to be honest. Still waiting for everything to arrive to set up my sim, but I might look into VR down the track a little.
DavidH71 Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 I now need glasses for close up ( the usual getting older symptom ), I can't read my phone without them now , I had no issues using VR without glasses the image was in focus , I do need my glasses for my monitor though. 1

The problem is there are few places that you can try VR helmets before purchasing them. You certainly can't demo a Sony VR helmet. I think your best bet would be to try a APPLE store, and try the Apple Vision Pro, you need to book a demo first. https://www.apple.com/au/apple-vision-pro/ 1

Hi Marc, I use bifocals. I tried my friend's VR goggles some time ago. They had some kind of dioptre adjustment. It seemed to work OK. BTW these warnings about motion sickness are real. I had forgotten about that. When I played with his VR goggles, I had to take them off after a while because - strangely enough - they were a bit too immersive. I found myself stumbling all over the place. I would have thought that it would be better with a racing sim where you are sitting down, but apparently not. BTW wasn't there a VR racing sim setup at the SNA show? I didn't try it. Did you?

Anyone have an opinion on this? VR has been an awesome addition as a training tool - much more realistic when spotting apexes, turn in points and braking markers. That said, you want to get a decent headset as the quality makes a big difference. I've tried the Meta Quest 3 and found it ok, but as it connects via USB and the processing is done on the headset I found the compression was annoying over long stints. I have ordered the Pimax Crystal Light as it should be much better according to the specs and is driven directly via the graphics card - hopefully it arrives before xmas so I can try it out over the break. 2
DavidH71 Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 I never had any motion sickness or any issues with VR in that regard neither does my friend who has been using VR for the last few years and won't go back to a monitor now. It may affect some people and not others , it's not a given that you will get motion sickness , even my other friend who suffers from this really badly in real life never had an issue when he tried mine and I was sure he was going too. 1

Any update?

The stories of woe around Pimax service so far are proving to be true. I ordered it at the end of November on the basis that it would ship in 2-4 weeks. Come 1st week of Jan I started chasing them and got mixed responses. Once I escalated it to their "escalations" email, I got some shipping info. I'm really hoping that the headset doesn't have issues as the experience so far doesn't give me much hope I'll get great support. 1
Administrator StereoNET Posted January 13 Administrator Posted January 13 Sorry to hear that. Hopefully the wait is worth it. Since we started talking about all this, my son got a Quest 3s. I tried the link cable to my PC for Call of Duty, but haven't tried it on the sim for F1 as yet. 1
manchu Posted January 13 Posted January 13 (edited) Geez there's some bloody nice rigs here. When the stars of time, money and space align I'd love to go down the rabbit hole but for now I'm just looking at getting a modest setup to use with the PS5 my boys got for xmas. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated!. I hoped my crappy old wheel would work (Driving Force Wireless) but it doesn't so tossing up cheap replacement options. No permanent space to use so whole setup needs to be fairly compact and easy to put away so probably just office chair + stand. Currently looking at a T300 for $300 on FB. 2 wheels, but no shifter and only 2 pedals. Good option? any alternative suggestions? I started looking at Logitech G29 etc but there's so much praise around for the T300 it seems like a better option if I can get it for a similar price. I'd really like to spend as little as possible to test the waters but don't want to buy complete junk that i'll instantly want to upgrade. . $200 - $300 seems about the right ballpark. manchu Posted January 17 Posted January 17 Well I missed out on the T300 but found a G29 with shifter and next level stand for $200 that I'll be picking up tonight. Pretty happy with that, to test the waters at least. 3
manchu Posted January 17 Posted January 17 It’s a start. The stand is an absolute beast of a thing. Rock solid. I just need to work out what to do about a chair. 1

caminperth Posted January 21 Posted January 21 So the Pimax arrived finally and I got it running. In the short time I've used it, coming from the Meta Quest 3 it's epic. Graphics are fantastic - the difference of being able to use the graphics card power over processing on device is so far ahead it's not even worth comparing them. Too hot in Perth at the moment to do longer stints in the garage on the rig so I'm hoping for some cooler weather tonight for a good test session.
Administrator StereoNET Posted January 21 Administrator Posted January 21 Hard to get up and running? SteamVR? My Pimax has been scheduled for delivery for the last two days (on board for delivery)....

There will be a firmware update that takes a little while. I used Steam VR. There seemed to be a couple of conflicts with the Meta software but it ran ok. 1

I had a play with sony Quest 3S a few days ago but it was so glitchy on PC I gave up. I will certainly uninstall that first in that case. 1

I am about to return the Pimax. It's just too glitchy, and I'm getting regular freezes with SteamVR use. However, perfect when I go back to non-VR version of F12024. It's perfect in all other games, but I don't play any of the others. I am only interested in F1 24. I don't think it's the rig, given it's a Intel i9, 128Gb ram, 4070 Ti GPU. Have tweaked settings but not come up with anything that improves the freezes or glitches. It's more likely F124's lack of native VR compatibility more than the Pimax itself I think.

Mine has been going ok, but I've been traveling so haven't had a long session on it. I plan to do this tonight with any luck so will report back. I don't use F1 24 - tried it once but found that GT racing is for me. 1
Administrator StereoNET Posted February 1 Administrator Posted February 1 Can confirm the Pimax Crystal Light is amazing! The immersion is just next level and really adds to the realism. I had no problems wearing glasses with the headset, but ordered prescription lenses anyway just for convenience. Only issue I have now is the adjustment dial on the back of the headset being bulky, and fouling on the F1 seating position of my cockpit. Will look into how that might be able to be helped. My lap times actually got faster and the ability to look at and focus on apexs made a massive difference.
