ATC SCM100ASL - the beasts arrive!

Featured Replies

Picked up the ATC SCM100asl's from @ClassicalGuy today.

After a chat and cuppa it was  a two man job to get these monsters into the van.

Have plenty of experimentation with placement to follow, but they sound pretty great in the approximate position I had the SCM19's.

Currently have the baffle centres 1.2m from the front wall, 1.8m from side walls - 2.5m apart and 2.8m from my listening position.

I've turned off my Rel sub - seems redundant!

Have taken a few pics:

  • Sound even better. Love, love, love these speakers. Kind of bleary eyed this morning......was up until 3am.

Paul, you will be blasting hard rock at stadium levels.

Congrats

Yeah they can sure do rock.

But also have amazing finesse and clarity with simple acoustic program.

They can play anything - as you'd expect of a first class monitor.

Try toeing them in severely so that the speakers axis crosses about one metre in front and center of the listening position. I heard Mark T’s SCM100 spkrs here in Perth and they sounded very good set up like that ...kind of like those big boxes just disappeared from the room (if you shut your eyes).

Thanks Steve, will try that in due course.

They disappear pretty well toed to intersect behind my listening position, just as well as my SCM19's in fact. There's a fair bit of space to the sidewalls in my setup - toeing as I have now creates a spacious sound without obnoxious effects from early reflections. Focus remains great.

How far were Mark's from the sidewalls?

Wow, those speakers look fantastic in your room. Nice pickup, enjoy!

I'm very jealous.  I spent weeks trying to work out how I was going to pay for them.  Ah well, it wasn't to be and given I would have to draw the money back out of the house loan it's probably just as well.   Love the ATC sound and will now work on saving up to buy some new ones.

Clearly a guy that is happy with his purchase, a late session is testament to that ?

Tobes, can you comment on any noticeable difference between your ATC 19s and the 100s ?

Good opportunity to compare because you had the 19s in nearly the same position in the same room.

Obviously a more solid bass foundation.

But notice anything else about sound signature ?

In the modern hifi world with so much bling and crap touted as hi-end, these are the real deal.  Congrat's on the purchase.

Damn you, these were mine!!!!  Stop posting about them, must stop looking.

Welcome to the club,

Incredible setup, big congratulations Tobes.

Mabey the buy first, seek permission later tactic should have been used in this case. It would have been worth the drama.

Well, there are plenty of noticeable differences.

Of course bass extension is an obvious one, but the 100's don't constantly push this in your face - it's only when the program material has bass.

What the extension gives you is a robust timbre to voices/midrange which greatly enhances realism. Images are also more focused and dimensional - but that may be a consequence of the more phase correct active setup. There's certainly a grandeur to the 100's as well as a great sense of ease that eludes the 19's.

I actually have the front of the baffles closer than my 19's (bit further in than in the above pic) but the 100's blend and focus beautifully. Not really surprising since the studio versions are often used quite close.

The voicing though is similar. I could have been quite happy with the 19's - they sounded marvellous with the Benchmark amps and augmented with the Rel sub.

For reference, the setup with the AHB2 amps and 19's:

As a rule I don't need permission but dragging this sort of money out of the house mortgage account isn't fiscally sound.   For the time being I'll have to put up with my active 40's and twin JL fathom subs whilst I save for some 50's or 100's.

That's what I did!

Plenty of smoothing over and justification required after though?.

Congratulations on a great buy.

Mine are in a 7.6 x 5.0 room , set up 3.4 metres apart , the front baffle is 1.5m from the front wall and they have around 1.8m from the sidewalls.

I'm also augmenting them with two ATC subwoofers which have the same Super Linear bass quality as the main speakers and integrate superbly.

Awesome setup Mark!

Early days here of course, so I may try that extreme toe in arrangement. In my room, with just initial playing around, I tend to prefer the focal point slightly behind my seating position.

Mine are now 1.3 out and 1.8m from sides (to centre of front baffle). Looks like your 1.5m measurement from the front wall is to the rear of the speaker(?).

I'll probably sell my Rel sub.

Cheers, Paul

Tobes, mate very impressive. How much do those mothers weigh?

Deffinetly won't need subs. Might need new neighbors though. Or you might have to move to a 5 acre block. But then you will get into trouble scaring the wild life?

In terms of "definitely won't need subs" - unless these ATCs can deliver a hearable 16Hz ... I suggest subs will be of advantage.  Unless Tobes only listens to Diana Krall and the like.

But yes, possibly his present REL sub doesn't go much further down than the new ATCs.

68Kg.

They're bulky as well. Though easy to move around with the felt sliders I've placed under the plinths.
