Sunday 7: Fastest cars under $70k

Everyone can appreciate some bargain performance.

"The vast majority of us don't posses stratospheric wealth to purchase such opulent examples of mechanical daring, but that doesn't mean there aren't some cheaper thrills to be had.

For those on an achievable budget there are more than a few options from hot hatch to wagons and family sedans.

So without further ado, here are the quickest cars on sale in Australia that won't break the bank."

summarising below,

1. BMW140i, 0-100 4.6 sec auto or manual $59,990 3L 6cyl 250kw, 500nm RWD

2. Chrysler 300 SRT Core, 0-100 4.6sec auto $65k, 6.4L V8 350kw, 637nm RWD

3. Ford Focus RS, 0-100 4.7sec man, $50,990, 2.3L 4cyl 257kw 440nm AWD

4. VW Golf R, 0-100 4.8sec man, auto(+2.5k), $53,490 2L 4cyl 213kw 380 nm AWD

5. Audi S3, 0-100 4.8sec auto, $63,900 2L 4 cyl, 213kw 380 nm AWD

6. Kia Stinger 0-100 4.9sec, auto, $48,990 3.3L V6, 272kw 510nm RWD

7. Subaru WRX STI 0-100 0-100 5.2sec, man, $50,890 2L 4 Cyl 221, 407 nm AWD

interestingly it said the subbie WRX bumped out the honda hot hatches like the civic type R even though they say the subbie long been the performance leader has been slowly on the decline. other cars missing are the renault megane RS though possibly because of 0-100 focus and model being replaced with new due soon. maybe also explains the peugeot 308 gti not being there. also no alfa, no volvo...

an interesting list. in that its quite a mix of AWD and RWD cars. is RWD making a come back ? after its been mostly a FWD/AWD space for hot hatches and performance cars for a while. quite a feat for bmw to get itself right up there. and a good reason i think is pricing the bmw M135i was originally a $70k + machine so really been re aligned in pricing wiht the M140i to come in under $60k ! just... but doesnt mean its thread bare as really a fully loaded machine vs a few others here need optioning up that send the price rocketing. looks like bmw has also beaten merc at its own game ? with no merc in the list given the merc a series really shook up this segment with the A series but not enough to get in here. perhaps their new model releases next month and beyond will put them back on the map ?

its also very obviously lacking the japanese makers who for many years always had contenders playing here with nissan, mazda, honda, toyota even all missing from here.

in ten years from now i suspect this list be different again with the EVs. you'd think and hope so but until then looks like for a performance car right now ones that run on squashed dino juice is still a pre requisite

I note the list doesnt say affordable.. as these arent exactly affordable ! doesnt break the bank they say and class as bargain. which i think they are cars like the stinger, the focus RS and even the bmw 140i here extra ordinary "bargains" in scheme of things. though cars like VW golf R probably safer choices with good resale and being very competent machines. nice list

however what woudl people consider as a more affordable performance car list these days ?

im thinking cars like,

golf gti (starting at $37k+)

hyundia i30SR ($25k+)

skoda octavia ($45k+)

suzuki swift turbo ($30k+)

we'll probably also add hyundia i30N to this list in coming months :)

any others ? and what are peoples thoughts on the original under $70k list ?

This article gives more detail how they conduct the 0-100 tests.

https://www.drive.com.au/car-of-the-year/drive-performance-testing-how-its-done-20121127-2a4va

"In performance testing the cars Drive does not load up the engine (by holding one foot on the brake to make for a better launch) or do wild wheelspins off the line, both of which can improve times. In a car with an automatic transmission we simply floor the throttle, while with a car with a manual gearbox we perform a brisk, real-world start. Some modern cars come with launch control systems and given their ease of operation we use these for performance testing."

The thing I have trouble with is that they allow cars to use their launch capabilities (where equipped). I haven't check which cars under 70k has them, but I would preferred in these cases they report two measurements, one with launch, and another without launch.

hi LHC, all cars here in the under $70k have launch control. though i myself am not a huge fan. grand tour had a funny clip on every day uses of launch control :D

Commodore SSV Redline does 4.9 0-100 time but not included. If it was we would own 2 vehicles on the list

yes definitely very nice car and belongs, sadly since holden no longer has on the market i suspect only reason not there. though possibly can still buy new and be better buying than the stinger i reckon that seems to be capitalising on the gap in this space holden has left.

holden does have the astra vxr hot hatch in thes $39k bracket perhaps one for the "affordable" list.

Launch control instructions for the Golf R are not in the manual, I'm sure a quick google will get me the procedure . I've been in an R that used it and there was no over rev'ing etc like that Porsche

My left and right feet are my launch control.

Not very good I might add.

I would have said the same in my Rex days, although I reckon I got it right about 25% of the time. I always erred on the side of burnt clutch rather than smashed gearbox.

Apparently Seve Ballesteros (sp?) once said, "who needs a lob wedge, these are my lob wedge" showing his hands... Very few were as talented as he was though...

That price discussion from the Renault thread creeps in here. I recently priced up an S3 and it got to $82,842 on the road with only the Black Pack and Performance pack added (must haves in a S3 imo). I could get a 2 year old Used one for just under $70k

The BMW is the winner so far, not a lot of options, comes nearly fully loaded and out the door for just under $70k

I find PDrive TV on YouTube does some great videos for performance times. They got the Stinger to 5.3

2. Chrysler 300 SRT Core, 0-100 4.6sec auto $65k, 6.4L V8 350kw, 637nm RWD

Interestingly, they detuned the current Hemi engine 20kW to 350kW when they put the 8-speed auto in the facelift model.

My 300 SRT has the previous 370kW and 5 speed auto. It IS faster than the current version. :) even though there are less gears.

Maybe coz it has more torque than a bus full of politicians.

How do you find responsiveness day to day? Now compared to the wife's Golf R my Redline seems like a tank and slow to respond to right foot adjustments, I blame the slow kick down of the auto and long pedal travel. The R just squats and gets out of there, much quicker as a daily drive, but probably not much in it if just doing drag strip type comparisons. Being quieter the R doesn't drag attention for the wrong reasons either, so more likely to push it, even though the Redline sounds sooo much better.

with the torque monster it is not sure you'd need more than 2-3 gears around town in the thing ....  let alone 8 :D

Responsiveness is my car’s middle name.
‘Missile’ is it’s first name[emoji1303]
The local WRX crew et al don’t like me [emoji57]

I don’t turn traction control off coz 20” tyres are expensive.

People do ask me about fuel economy. Pfft.
You don’t worry about fuel economy with nearly 500hp on hand.

For the record, I regularly get 12 l/100km, but I don’t drive a lot of city.

a 2 yr old S3 with a few bolt on bits is seriously fast if done right. I never buy brand new, its just not worth the hit . After 2 years they depreciate by around 50%.

Oh goody, now we can all (OK, almost all) break the law in less than 5 seconds.

Where are the stopping and cornering tests?

always has to be a party pooper :welcome: but hopefully these are a bit better in the cornering and stopping department than cars from the bygone age of  "Hey charger" :na:

but in anycase dont worry, am not buying a new s3 :D

hehe this segment is getting a lot of attention of late it seems.

looks like car advice has just done a bit of an indepth comparison throwing the focus RS up against the bmw 140i and also the one that got left out in the honda civic Type - R

http://www.caradvice.com.au/614995/2018-bmw-m140i-v-honda-civic-type-r-v-ford-focus-rs-le-comparison/

ive not driven the ford or the honda civic, but from my little experience with the bmw i do think they seem well on the mark,.

a good read ...we are so lucky with these kind of cars around

there was a time only few years ago was an absolute dearth of anything with a sporting pulse !

2018 BMW M140i v Honda Civic Type R v Ford Focus RS LE comparison

"Among today’s contrarians, there’s a descendant of the Escort in the form of the latest-generation Ford Focus RS – complete with all-wheel drive after two generations of front-drive. And RWD has its exclusive proponent with the BMW M140i.

They’re here to battle a model that has ambitions to join the FWD heroes in that Hot-Hatch Hall of Fame: the Honda Civic Type R. It may be Japanese in terms of brand and development, but it hails from Western Europe just like its rivals. Like other Civics, it’s built by Brits, in Swindon.

With the Focus RS keeping out the not-quite-as-thrilling VW Golf R to wear the Team AWD badge, let’s find out if front, rear or all wheels is the way to go for your $50–$60K hot-hatch… ~ "
