Looks like I won't get to hear them after all.

No Steve, sorry about that.

Theres a few other nice speakers in this house though, i just need a bigger house to do any of them justice. One day ill get you over.

Unfortunately the house is just not setup for demos, the few people who have popped around will attest to the fact that the house i live in is crap and as such the systems are represented poorly.

I can tell you that the ML1's sounded very nice - does that help?

Would have been nice to hear them, I'll have to search out another pair close by :thumb:

Would love to have bought those ML1s , but I was too slow when you listed the gear. :)

What Rega mods have you done and which has made the most difference?

Hi Houdini

I've done the Groovetracer Middle-of-the-road subplatter, Groovetracer acrylic platter and Groovetracer counterweight. When I bought the TT it already had the Cardas require and Vampyre RCA leads.

Hard to say which did the most. I added both platters at the same time and haven't looked back. The counterweight was part of a concentrated effort to set up the arm correctly and that probably made the biggest difference.

As stand alone mods I'm gonna say the acrylic platter. I put on the glass for shits and giggles the other day and it made a noticeable difference to the 'impact' of the sound. Seemed to be less solid in the bass

Dunno though, hard to judge

So after 5 years in this rental, we're all packing up and moving to rent again! Bigger house this time though. Why dont we buy you ask? spend all my money on cars and hi fi and dont have the $100,000 in the bank to afford the deposit.

I have two 4x5 metre rooms to play with. one will be HT, one will be stereo and office.

HT

Sharp 40" LCD, Pure AV PF60, Project RPM 5.1, Project Tube box, Denon 4308, Oppo BD83se, Bel Canto S500, SqueezeBox, B&W 705 - front, Focal 707 - Rear, Random Klipsch - Centre.

Stereo

Audio Research VT50, Bel Canto Pre3, Saturn, PS audio stuff, Squeezebox Touch, Planar 3, VAF i-33.

Desk

Bel Canto 300iu, JB3, CI Audio HPA, ATH ESW-10

Bedroom

NAD 355, Squeezebox, JB4

Thoughts? Ideally for synergy the Bel Canto pre and power should be together but i dont have a pre amp for the ARC. Oh and i still have a Melody SP9r sitting around - maybe that with VAFs?

Get some ML1s

Steve, i dont want to start wars here, but i prefer the B&W 705's with my gear in my system. As much as B&W is the brand of hifi speakers you buy when you dont know anything about hifi speakers (like The Rock for wrestling) they do make a mighty fine speaker.

If i was going Lenehan again (and i probably will) ill get the ML3's. Or at very least one of the Reference models in the ML1 or ML2

I was joking Nathan.

  • Author

yeah yeah i realise that, just thought id post up my initial thoughts on the 705's. thought id say 'not start wars' as people do love the ML1's (myself included)

Cool, maybe some 2905 quads then

What area now Nathan ?

For your HT room can you look into a projector? My ht room is also 4 x 5 and feels just right with a 140' screen.

I fully endorse the Quad 2905s if you've got the room, have the right amp to drive them and don't feel the necessity to let the whole neighbourhood know you've got the stereo on. They are a bit power hungry. IMHO, the best speakers I've owned so far for stereo listening. They particularly excell at vocals, transients and micro dynamics with clean and fast bass. These are the only non hybrid electrostatics I've heard that have decent bass, but they do need a big enough room and they have to be a fair distance out from the walls behind them to really bring out their best qualities. Not heard a hybrid system I really liked, but if the opportunity arises I'd like to have a listen to Steve M's Nakamichi Dragons which are hybrids.

Very nice room Alan.

Dont think ill be upgrading speakers guys. Pretty happy with the stuff I have. Its just a matter of finding what works best in what situations

I hadn't considered a Projector..... got me thinking now

Am jealous of Monkeyboi's room...

Partly, because my wife flately refuses to allow a disrete dedicated screen for the music server to display what is playing.... Hmmm....

Try seller her on the idea that a 24" HDMI LCD monitor is a lot cheaper to run with only 11 watts of power consumption compared to a 52" TV.

Well, at least that's my reason for using the smaller monitor. It's also a lot kinder on the TV when one needs to access the GUI of devices for navigating the music server or progamming the PVR to record the odd TV show or two.

Noob alert.

What model are the Focals and how do they compare in your mind to the 705's?

  • Author

The Focals are the 707S Chorus line. 500mm high bookshelf with 7" woofer

They are a fun speaker, great for playing loud rock music. Bass is solid but never boomy, well rounded. They aren't the last word in detail and can be quite bright with bright sounding electronics. They sound better on my NAD then they do with a Bel Canto.

In comparison the 705 doesn't have as much bass, but a better quality. Voices also sound deeper and more natural with a more pin point centre image

The 707s are more inline with B&W 685 which I've also owned. They were a fairly fun speaker that just played music and didn't get caught up with the HiFi of it all - well rounded, work well in bedrooms where serious listening isn't required

When and where Nathan? I am still struggling to catch up with you.
