Great looking pics Nathan, you were obviously moving things around too when you took them. I noticed the tonearm wire the same as Grumps, they're hanging pretty low, but not a problem unless they're contacting the vinyl. Just a question about your VAFs, or at least your right channel speaker.................do you have it in that position all the time or was it just that pic? It would be good to see a pic of the whole system with both speakers in it. Did you buy your phono stage locally?.............I've definitely seen and listened to one over there, but I can't remember where.

Cheers,

Keith

Got a nice new Turntable here. I need to get a tracking force guage so i can set it up properly, tuning the tracking force by ear has yielded surprisingly good results. Even setup the way it is, its m

Yeah its in that position most of the time, its a wierd setup. The cabinet cuts off the bottom driver. I have a plan around it, put some spikes on the bottom and a wooden plinth on the carpet to prop them up a bit.

Its changed a bit now with the new amp so ill take some more pics soon of how the whole room looks, give you more of an idea of what im up against.

The phono stage was bought from the classifieds on here, not from a local. Nosepeg i think it was.

Yeah Nathan, it's not just the cutting off the bottom driver, but also the amount of toe in you have, assuming your listening position is directlyin front of the equipment [Edit] I just had another look at that pic..........is that your left channel speaker? That would make more sense!!. I couldn't imagine you would be getting the best from that speaker in that spot, so I guess you must have a pretty difficult room to work with. I think it was Mark [sETfan] who had the same phono stage as you have and I did listen to it on a couple of occasions.

Cheers,

Keith

yep that the left speaker, my position is 2.8m straight ahead from the tweeter, then there is my bed (its a bedroom) between the left and right speaker. It may not look pretty but it sounds better than previous setups

I like the fact that i didnt drop the little sapphire ball, or install things back to front. Everything just worked, big sigh of relief

ive got the Focal 707's back in business now, my god these sound good. I dont know what it is but they are just magic

Very neat for a uni bloke's home - I've been in some shocking uni apartments: empty mugs under the bed, half dirty sock tucked into the sofa.

Nice setup - during Uni I had a Pioneer 3-in-1 unit with X-Bass boost and equalizer ... I vaguely remember hearing Ace of Base on it !!

well Im out of Uni now. Looking for a bigger house so i can have a dedicated room for the stereo. Too much uncertainty with life atm though

Looking good. What platter upgrade is that?

Hi Telecine...........it looks very much like a Groovetracer acrylic platter. Here it is.:)

Cheers,

Keith

Thanks Keith. Looks good.

Does it sound much different R&R?

  • Author

yep its the groovetracer.

hard to tell whether the platter does it or the sub platter but the sound is a lot more focused, heavier maybe. Guitars have more crunch, bigger bass. The vocals are the best though. Stereophonics - Decade in the Sun sounds fantastic

so yes, it does sound different, a worthwhile upgrade if you have $500 lying around

Thanks Nathan for the mini review. I'll keep it in mind as a future upgrade option.

You'll be upgrading the DL-110 soon then Nathan.

  • Author

yes i probably should actually. I think the phono stage is more important at this stage

probably should get some new speakers aswell...

If you like the 110 try the 103R with a good MC stage

If you like the 110 try the 103R with a good MC stage

Might be able to provide you a 103 and decent phono for a extended tryout shortly.

Just doing some new year's day lurking.

The photos are awesome!

Oh yeah, i picked up some B&W stands today. Very sturdy and look sweet.

Also had a listen to a pair of B&W 805's, did pretty much everything right.

Beaut looking system Nathan. l didn't realise this was setup in your bedroom until RR was explaining to me today the limited room space you have. The biggest upgrade you will ever make will come the day you get your own room to setup your gear without too much compromise.

Cheers,

Oh yeah, its a stupid situation. Very small room in a very small house. I think thats why bookshelf speakers work better in here.

Still though, its a hell of a bedroom setup

It sure is. When l was living at home l had many vintage bits of gear pass through ending up with an old pair of Magneplanar IIb's or similar, old Maggies anyway in a 3 x 3m bedroom. Those were fun days!

Looking good Nathan. Phono stage?

undecided atm. I had a play with your 640P, its not night and day to the PP3, fairly similar.

really not sure what to do about it. I could just get that Yaqin repaired, but that thing was a bit of a PITA. Theres a Music Fidelity in the FS section that looks alright, maybe ill just get the cheap as chips Graham Slee. Ill check out the Project Tube Box at VAF this week and see what thats worth. Other than that im not sure
