  2. Graham Slee Majestic DAC/Pre-amp with PSU1 Linear Power Supply (230v).

Bought new from Australian distributor in May 2020.

Best DAC I've heard south of $5K (and I've owned a few!!). Full-sounding textures, balanced across the frequency spectrum, transparent, controlled yet powerful bass, excellent soundstage and imaging...Extended yet natural treble. Violins and pianos sound lifelike. An 'expensive' sounding DAC, in other words.

Functions absolutely perfectly, cosmetics 9/10 (some marks around USB socket in rear).

Never expected to put this up for sale, but I'm upgrading to a costly all-in-one server and need the funds.

Current AUD retail price is less than I paid—and certainly less than international prices for the Majestic.

    Dimensions:

    Width: 174; Height: 57; Depth: 188 (mm)
Weight: 2.6 kg packed - with PSU1, DC and power cords

    From the manufacturer:

    Free From Harshness

What really sets the Majestic apart from similar pre-DACs is the lack of harshness in its sound.
It's what makes it sound so naturally musical: Its digital chipset is run 2dB below full-scale to prevent the harsh sound of "clipping"; and its analogue filters work differently to other DACs.

Its analogue filters sound more natural in five ways:

    1. their inherently fast slew-rate captures every part of the musical waveform
    2. their inverting* topology does away with common-mode distortion
    3. the filters operate balanced to complement the DAC chip balanced output, cancelling noise
    4. they use our ultra-linear technique which gives true 180 degree local negative feedback at the most sensitive hearing frequencies
    5. the filters won't "saturate" and distort on the loudest passages
This means you don't get harmonic artefacts - alien noises - embedded in your music.
Those noises are the very thing that makes digital music sound so-digital and unatural. And is why you should compare how a DAC sounds with real music...

Direct comparisons between the Majestic and others reveals that something is missing - with the Majestic you don't get the harsh sounding artefacts!

    Reviews:

. . . I tried running the CD42 direct into the S/PDIF 192k input. Holy crap what a difference... This was really a 'I can't believe this' moment. The thing sounded like the speakers had been taken out from their hiding place 1m apart on a shelf and set-up 3 m apart on proper stands – I can think of no better description – a system that really serves as background only became analytical and musical in one moment.
. . . I'd been using my beloved and modified Micromega Solo as CD player along with the Oppo - both using their on-board DACs. But then I swapped to using the S/PDIF output on both and once again I was simply taken aback by the improvement in sound. DACs make a difference it's true, but I can honestly say that I've never heard one that offers such a shift, and a positive one to any digital source I tried. With both (excellent) sources the sound opened up, the space between notes expanded and a level of detail and ambience - natural, never pushy – flooded out.
Doing back-to-back tests with the Audio-Note Zero DAC was very interesting because there was a certain similarity. Both were open and energetic, the Zero majoring on the latter, but the GSP had it beat on sound depth and spacial awareness generally. Bass was similarly handled with the GSP being a little lighter and more defined. The Zero did more wall-of-sound where appropriate, the GSP clearly superior with something like 'Take Five' in both 'space' and the definition of leading edges. The Zero is just a simple DAC – the Majestic a full function multi-source preamp, that they went toe to toe says an awful lot and I have to say that as a DAC alone the Majestic took the contest by a head.

This is a Rolls or Bentley with real wood veneer not carbon fibre, and super soft suspension, not spine shattering hardness. This product oozes quality and musicality with a useful analogue input thrown in. Yes, there are cheaper DACs out there, but this one is musical where many out there might just be telling you fibs
    Janine Elliot, HiFiPig.com

I used a Clearaudio Performance DC turntable for analogue duties and my trusty Sony CDPX 3000ES on both the analogue and coax inputs to compare the DAC in the Majestic against Sony’s excellent own on board DAC. I have to say it was a close call between the two showing how good Sony’s original design was and how natural sounding and sweet the Majestic was with no digital nasties. My friend came over to hear the units and was mightily impressed. You could play anything digital through the DAC and it would sound very natural, dare I say analogue like.
    Ian Ringstead, HiFiPig.com

Rendering of treble sounds is particularly notable. From new the treble sounded a little bright for my tastes, but it soon settled down to be clear, crisp and free from any “digital glare”. High percussion has a sparkle that’s never overdone and orchestral violins have a sheen underlined by the rich midtones that’s very appealing. In fact, much like a good moving coil cartridge. Speaking of which – as I mentioned in an earlier post – vinyl reply using the DAC as an analogue pre-amp was totally transparent and as good as you’re likely to get.

When I first listened to it I was overwhelmed by the clarity, detail and vibrancy of the sound that it produced. I couldn't believe that so much extra detail existed on familiar albums. why hadn't I been able to access this before? When you already think that you have something you think of as close to perfection just to know there is more available makes one very excited! I wanted to play all my old music to see what I've been missing!

Firstly, at the risk of repeating what has already been said, my impression is of a very ‘grown up’ musical signature without any trace of digital harshness. I have not experienced that before from CDs or digital files. Dynamics, attack and timing are also spot on, nothing is overblown or lacking. It is extremely ‘realistic’ sounding Comparing to what I had previously, it is as if an enthusiastic shouty teenager has transformed into a full range adult performer. It doesn’t mean the former was bad, however the Majestic is much more listenable and absolutely without fatigue over extended listening sessions. The biggest surprise has been with lower resolution MP3s where the improved smoothness is really noticeable. That is a nice little bonus

Overall I would describe the sound as smooth, valve like perhaps, but with considerable extension in the lower registers. It is not over bright in the upper registers, manages to tame the harsh sounds experienced from some poorer digital sources, but maintains clarity particularly with female voices and the leading edge of cymbal and snare drum strikes are really sharp. The bass extension gives good definition to each note, good articulation and no smearing of bass notes one into another. Detail retrieval is exceptional, as others have similarly observed with the Reflex. Previously unheard details such as noises in the audience or background become apparent. Soundstage is quite wide and realistic sometimes appearing to extend beyond the physical limits of the speakers and with well defined, stable imaging.

Nearly a week in to using the Majestic as preamp in addition to DAC. It's changed. Not enough "o"s in smooth to describe it (thanks for the line, Sherman Potter). Bass is tighter and a little deeper, but the extra texture (I use that word a lot in describing this thing) is a winner.

  4. I’m going down a much simpler route and selling my black Auralic Aries G1.
This needs no introduction. Works via wifi or wired connection, the Aries G1 connects directly to Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify Connect and as a Roon endpoint
I purchased this new from Audio Influence in May 2022. I’ve loved the sound but I’m simplifying things and going down the single box (actually two boxes), route.
Also included is genuine Auralic remote which is a separate, optional purchase.
It’s in perfect working order and excellent condition. I have the original double-box packing so it can be shipped at an agreed cost. Pickup is also welcome.

  6. Hi, selling my Chord Hugo2 DAC, 2go streamer and leather case (including the original cables and boxes). Have had these for a couple of years and has only been used as a headphone rig in the house. The 2go streamer is brilliant and syncs wonderfully with Roon and the battery is in great condition. There are loads of reviews on the Hugo2 and 2go so wont bore with my view other than it provides a wonderfully detailed experience and so easy to use. Have loved this setup but have moved to wireless headphones and back to floorstanders for listening sessions (am also selling my headphones in separate listings). Grab yourself an amazing rig.

  15. Up for sale is a package of the Chord M Scaler with the Farad Super3 15v Linear Power Supply.

(1)Chord Mscaler, a million taps! Able to up-sampling from 88.2 to 756Khz. Best partner with Chord DACs (Dave, TT2, Qutest…). It can also output to other DAC, or different DACs at the same time. I tried the Mscaler with a few different Non-Chord DACs, they all benefited from Mscaler, even at 44.1.

(2)Farad Super 3 Linear Power Supply, providing 15V linear power supply to Mscaler. An obvious upgrade to Mscaler. More silent and the sound field becomes more stable and calm. It is a good quality and very solid LPS, worth to try with different power cords and DC cables to get the best out of it.

It is already the price to sell. For serious buyer who doesn't negotiate, I am happy to throw in the OPTO-DX and a pair of Ghent Belden Coax Cables for free, to make them even happier to play with the M Scaler.

OPTO-DX, acts as optical isolation, to further reduce (or isolate) the noise from upstream devices (NAS, computer, router…) to the DAC. The effect is obvious. Easier to hear more detail. The Coax cables comes with the OPTO-DX are very transparent. Depending on system, the sound could be tuned effectively by using different Coax cables. For example, the Ghent Belden Coax Cables are warmer at the tradeoff of some detail and transparency.  I had very good result with AudioQuest Eagle Eye Coax cable and a pair of Naim DC-1 Coax cables.

Fantastic sound for the money and really like how it has its own personality.
As I also listen to a lot of classic rock/pop from the 70’s/80’s, this player has a knack of just making it sound right, never gets too fatiguing.
Plenty of features although I only used it as a streamer/dac combined using the Cambridge Audio streaming software and it worked brilliant.

  17. Dual AK4495 384KHz 32Bit DSD DAC by Ultimate Stars

TEXT and images Below From original owner. thank you- Borrowed his images on different filter settings.

Here is a dual AK4495 DAC recommended to the original owner by SNAmember @Ozcall (RIP) who fitted Burson opamps into the DAC.
I had been interested in the work that @Ozcall had been doing, building and modding gear, and was aware of his great reputation on SNA with his innovative ways of seeking out great sounds. When I saw this DAC for sale with his fingerprints on it I couldn't resist.

This was in my main system for some time and I got a lot of pleasure out of it. I love the options of the various filters to get the most out of different genres and tracks, as well as the ability to play high res music up to 384KHz/32BIT and DSD64 and DSD128. Recently however, I have been focussing on Philips based TDA1541 and TDA1540 DACs so am considering moving this one on to a new person.
I tested all inputs and settings prior to posting for sale. It sounds fantastic with 44.1K, and high res sounds incredible. I ripped some of my vinyl to 192K/32BIT to listen via roon when ease is key (call me crazy), and listening to it through this DAC. I was really surprised at how much warmth, detail and similarity to the analogue original came across, not to mention other high res tracks sounding amazing.

    Input Support:
    Coaxial: 44.1K-192K 24BIT
    Fiber(Optical): 44.1K-192K 24BIT
    USB (XMOS XU208 card): 44.1K-384K 32BIT / DSD64, DSD128

  19. Mytek Brooklyn Dac + in immaculate condition. Works as a Pre amp, DAC , Headphone AMP and Phono stage in one small but well built box. Stereophile product of the year.

Pre Amplifier, DAC , phono stage & Headphone Amp

HiFi fans are always trying to eek out improved performance from system upgrades. It’s an insidious business to ones wallet sometimes. Maybe not as insidious as Russian Novichok in Salisbury town centre, but obviously ‘wow moments’ can be had in some components which are very much worth it. In this regard there seems no end to how Digital to Analogue Converters (DACs) have improved as technology advances. This predecessor DAC to the current Mytek ‘Brooklyn DAC+’ model is an interesting study of the performance of DACs in the last few years and what’s now possible for the money and what Mytek are all about. It is in these senses that I review this product, and as an early foray into reviewing.
Mytek are a pro audio firm based in New York with manufacturing capability in Poland. They have specialised in the pro recording market but until relatively recently have entered consumer audio. The Mytek Brooklyn DAC then is of similar specification to devices such as the Benchmark DAC3 HGC.

Mytec Brooklyn DAC review : The Mytek Brooklyn has a lovely display and milled front. One of the best!

    All encompassing

In simple terms this unit is a solid state pre amplifier to be used with power amplifiers or powered speakers, a headphone amplifier with dual right and left sockets, and ostensibly a DAC, either stand-alone or with pre amp duties using its volume control. As you’d expect it supports CD standard quality audio onwards to high resolution PCM audio formats up to 32bit/384khz, including high resolution DSD (up to DSD256) and MQA. The USB 2.0 input supports files up to this higher bit and sample rates and native DSD up to DSD256, with other digital inputs of lower sample rate DSD over PCM (DoP). It too has RCA inputs for connecting up an analogue source or as a moving magnet (MM) or moving coil (MC) phono stage pre amplifier, and both analogue and XLR outputs. With this specification it’s very much a jack of all trades and the fact Mytek have got all this kit into such a small unit is clearly a feat of good design. The unit has a lovely ‘dimpled’ milled aluminium front panel and the top and bottom cooling holes are punched in the company logo, which is smart too.
This unit prescribes a ‘how many people can you fit in a mini’ approach to using all the space on the back panel for connections. The USB 2.0 input is definitely the one to use and in my tests I connected a very silent Innuos Zenith Mark 2 server using Chord C-USB digital cable and I additionally tried it with a Cyrus Stream X Signature UPNP/DLNA streamer feeding it over coaxial. You can either connect it to the mains via the AC socket and for this purpose I used a Chord Shawline Power cable ,or you can use the 12v DC socket to either a battery supply or one of a number of commercially available linear power supplies. Mytek somewhat cautiously recount that a batter or linear power supply “may have a positive impact on sound quality”.
Mytec Brooklyn DAC review : Connections tightly use up the rear real estate
The attention to design is no more evident too when you turn the unit on and are confronted with a lovely coloured high resolution OLED display with input buttons on the front panel for making selections in conjunction with the volume control knob. You can change between a simple screen view with the sample rate and bit depth and volume level, or a settings display view to move between all selectable options and with metering displays for RMS and peak levels of both channels.

If you use the unit as a stand-alone DAC you need to turn on bypass mode to set maximum fixed gain output to your volume controlled pre amp, integrated or possibly active speakers. And talking of the volume control, its both of the digital and analogue variants. It initially seems a bit strange that Mytek supply an Apple TV remote but it’s metal construction does compliment the units design. Another neat feature is the ability to change the brightness and colour of the Mytek logo on the front left side panel, great for matching to other non Mytek components in your rack.

    First sound impressions
Early impressions as a DAC / pre using Cyrus Mono x200 Signature power amps, is that this DAC has a liquidity to it, such that the music seems to flow very well. It’s very transparent with an airy presentation, which is probably its main character, offering realistic sibilance to lispy vocals. It’s not in anyway an in your face analytical sound. Bass is nice, fast and deep, and the overall sound is fast on its attack of music. Experience dictates good gains are often achieved using a linear power supply where you can, and with the Brooklyn DAC this might increase soundstage and imaging to levels more associated or matched to more expensive pre amplifiers with dedicated power supplies. Unfortunately I didn’t have a proprietary power supply to hand at the time of this review. Maybe it would perhaps have been beneficial if a dedicated power supply was made by Mytek for the Brooklyn DAC, as both an upgrade and up-selling opportunity. Trying other aftermarket PSU’s that work with the Brooklyn DAC would be interesting too.
The Brooklyn DAC is at ease with low bit rate recordings as it is with higher resolution material. It’s very good at taking an old CD ripped recording which may be lacking in detail and dynamics, and bringing the recording up to a better standard. This is obvious in some classical recordings and you cannot be anything other than very impressed, particularly as the Mytek creates a level of insight into music with this openness and airiness. This makes music very real and satisfying. Having once experienced it is hard to go back to any lesser standard.

Mytec Brooklyn DAC review : Lovely high resolution display and very pleasing!
Feeding it DSD tracks from the Innuos Zenith Mark 2 it certainly took on board extra levels of attack, realism, speed, and naturalness. I compared Tidal MQA masters fed from the Innuos, enabling and disabling MQA in the Brooklyn’s settings to hear immediate effects with the blue MQA detection logo illuminating. I have to say the presentation took on a more natural balanced form in enabling MQA for a full unfold of the MQA file. It was subtle and slight but as if the balance of all components to the music were more discernible and better layered, vocals were in their place and so were accompanying instruments. I think therefore that MQA encoding functionality is worthwhile in this DAC.

Using it just as a DAC into my Cyrus DAC XP Signature and PSX-R power supply combo on pre amp duties, there seemed to be the best of the Mytek’s detail, transparency and airiness, with good soundstage and drive to the music. Compared to my Cyrus DACs, I was definitely still getting more detail, resolving power and speed and the pleasing airy treble was still there. It struck me that this is a DAC that would work very well in systems with tonally warm speakers and amps to elevate resolution and transparency and give best balance. This would be my preference in buying the Mytek Brooklyn at least and good system matching is required. To use it with analytical amplifiers or speakers with good treble might be overpowering and in such speaker configurations there are smoother DACs on the market and the airy treble might not be to all tastes.

It was also very responsive to better sources like the Innuos and in not feeding it noisy digital files across bog standard PC type peripheral NAS drives and routers, unsurprisingly it performed much better. The Chord power cable I used helped lower the noise floor too in creating a relatively quieter background.
It didn’t quite have the same dynamic raw realism of a Chord Electronics 2Qute DAC in comparison to its airy presentation, but it’s clearly been voiced with a different sound in mind, so horses for courses. For almost all albums I regularly listen too I thought it terrific and it’s very good on all music types. Playing some fast paced electronic music, it’s very dynamic and fast paced indeed and synths stand out as if they are being played by a synthesiser in situ.
I used the fast roll off filter which provided the best quality sound. In the box are gain jumpers which Mytek report are to be used so output level of the DAC can be reduced by 6db, which appear to be used to gain match with other non Mytek amplifiers.

It’s clear that the Brooklyn DAC works very well as a whole in all the things it does. It’s a kind of fast hatchback car. Like such a car is fast, practicable, and the kids can also sit in the back, the Brooklyn DAC could fit into lots of systems. It’s well designed and made, has very good sound quality on a pound per pound basis, and it ticks lots of boxes. It also beats some similarly priced pre amp DAC combos I’ve heard particularly those with lesser specced and revered DACs, on paper at least. It would work really well with some quality stand-mounts and a decent power amp. This iteration of the ESS Sabre Pro 9018 DAC chip works well too. The new Brooklyn DAC+ model is reported as having the new ESS Sabre Pro 9028 DAC chip, improved analogue input performance, improved phono stage transparency, a better headphone amp, and finally a dual mono analogue path.
Mytec Brooklyn DAC review – exquisite cases

Albeit this is the original model in the range and not the new one, to conclude on the original question of whether a ‘wow moment’ happened, the answer is a resounding yes. Features and sound quality is fantastic for the price, albeit bear in mind the presentation might not be a match for all kit and tastes. I’d heavily recommend looking at the Mytek Brooklyn DAC in the right system, and particularly if the changes in the new model build on this one as would be expected. It would be interesting now to review this model against the Brooklyn DAC + and to form a view about the balance of the newer model.

  21. Hi

I am selling my Chord Electronics Hugo TT2.  I am the original owner and I have owned it since May 2021.  It has the been the heart of my system and was paired with the Chord M-Scaler.  I am selling as I have upgraded to the Chord Electronics Dave DAC.  The TT2 is in great condition.  They are plenty of great reviews online.  A natural upgrade for those who own the Qutest - I owned the it before upgrading to the TT2.

The price does not include delivery.  It comes with the original box.  Pickup is welcome.

    Thanks for looking.

  22. Highly versatile streamer and server with four possible outputs. The elac discovery comes with Roon essentials which gets closer and closer to full Roon since it's original inception and with a much simpler set up, no servers etc are required. The quality of sound from analogue out is very good, better than I experienced from a bluesound node 2i I would say with a huge perk of being able to a roon server also. This is cheaper than a lifetime Roon license!

Han's goes into great detail about why this is a great unit. There is a very positive Stereonet review too:

Couple very small blemishes but hard to capture due to the finish. No manuals or boxes but can pack safely if needed.

  24. I’m selling my aria streamer with dac, purchased for $ 9950 with 2tb ssd and built in dac.

    * Selling this as an extremely good streamer /dac.  Note - the internal hard drives have stop functioning so l’ve been using it strictly as a streamer/dac with Qobuz and Tidal, sounds great, software is stable and never drops out- brilliant design and built like a tank.

Someone who is more tech savvy than myself may be able to resolve the driver issue. The unit still shows up on the network when the aria app is launched.

*the silent angel sitting on top of aria is not included.

  29. Selling my sonicTransporter by Small Green Computer.

This is an early model of Sonic Transporter by Small Green computers.
Fanless machine with external 12V switch mode power supply (easy to upgrade with LPS)  Can run as a low cost Roon core to replace your desktop PC or Mac. Can run as music library by adding external USB drive. I am currently using it as a Roon EndPoint. As it has a small blueprint setup, the postage cost should be around $20 within Australia,
