Just opened a 1991 Michael Hermitage while watching the cricket.
 
Magnificent - perfect condition.  As good as a 1972 Grange I had a few years back,.  Just having it with some cheese and wafers.  I am in heaven.
 
Just a small crust - the cork came out easily.  This could go another 25 - 50 years - no problem.  Reminds me of those Bailey's Shiraz's I heard about that were buried for 100 years and when opened people said - great - but could use a few more years.
 
Classic benchmark Australian Shiraz. Good value for what you get - genuine Grange class.  Each year instead of getting say 2 Grange at its over the top price get one Grange and 6 of these - you will not be disappointed.   Grange - great wine - but way too expensive IMHO.  Get one each year for its mystique but other wines are just as good IMHO at a much cheaper price.

Just finished a whole bottle - totally pissed.  Offered some to my sister but she is still recovering from yesterday.

This thread could end up as a way of recommending great wine for good money. Any other top reds out there gents?

Had my last 91 Wynns Centenary the other night, magnificent wine, the 90/91 Wynns were all great wines (MIchael, Riddoch, Centenary, Black Label even), and had a 1966 Wynns BL CabSav that same night and it was drinking superbly. Still have a 90 Michael I'm looking at drinking in the next week or so.

Just checked a 1990 magnum of the wynn's coonawarra and it's labeled 150 year centenary as well. Years ago I thought buying magnums and double magnums was a good idea but now I think it's pretty dumb as very few friends appreciate good aged wine and the opportunities to open a bottle are few and far between.

Only winery I am on the mail list of these days.

 

Had their Sparkling Burgundy on Christmas Day.  Pretty good.  A friend though thought it just OK - in future he just wants the Block 6.

Years ago I thought buying magnums and double magnums was a good idea but now I think it's pretty dumb as very few friends appreciate good aged wine and the opportunities to open a bottle are few and far between.

I feel your pain Guru.....same issues here with double magnums..... Seemed like such a good idea at the time

Maybe it's still possible to have too much of a good thing.

I still buy the occasional magnum of Rhone or Burgundy.

 

For my own label I hand bottle a run of a dozen or so magnums of each line (maybe one of the two whites though) mostly for family and friends. Double magnums of fortified was a bit silly though, mind you we had one earlier this year for a friends wedding. Then there are the 6 litre bottles of The Syrah 2008... that is a big drink.

Double magnums are in no mans land, fine if you have 20 for dinner. Steven Lake gave me a bottle of the 89 lake folly Cabernet as a thank you years ago for some work I did on his system and I spoke to the current winemaker about swapping it for some current vintage as they use them for wine dinners they host. It sounds stupid to be talking about too much good wine though.

Only time I drink magnums is at our Wine Tasting Group Xmas party. Like everyone else they seemed like a good idea at the time and I always like a nice wooden box... I am slowly whittling down mine by not purchasing any more magnums and/or gifting them to work charity auctions.

 

You could always try and auction them off via Wickmans/Langtons/Sterling/MW etc.

You only need four people to demolish a magnum. I quite like them because they age more slowly

Best value wine I've ever had was a cheeky Pinot Nero from a small supermarket in Venice. On tap, 2 euro per litre, BYO receptacle.

Lovely, i once saw a travel programme with Rick Stein where the cellar door of a winery was a brick wall with a number of taps protruding out of it. Written above each tap was the type of wine and the price per litre. It was an honesty system and even the box wasn't locked!
