Big thanks to flemo for building the Onken cabinets. Perfect quality and finish. He is the man :)

I think I should have enough bass now.

Holy Moly Tuyen - they are amazing: you are a complete nut! and I love it.

Well done mate - long way from a Transporter and the Hawthorne's.

Very nice Tuyen, well done!

Lovely bedroom system!! :) Nice cabinets from Flemo.

They do look very impressive. Well done.

Looks fantastic, but I'm still amazed you have all of this in your bedroom :) positively insane (but in a good way!)

Thank you guys.

Must be naturally following my father and uncle's footsteps (they were speaker/hifi gurus back in pre-Vietnam War days, used to run something silly like 4x 15" Sansui woofers in their banana-leaf house) :)

Willco, I believe yoshio has experience with the Acourate software and uses/used it in his current setup.

Ha! Well I hope he can get the Gist of it--it's not an easy program to master--if anybody here does please post-Ha!

Ah yes the Sansui's I had ones with lattice woodwork on the grilles-- curved fronts I think-not too shabby with the AU-777 either+ Dual 1019TT

Measured frequency response from the full horn system (including bass channels using low frequency compression bass drivers).

This guy is a true nutter :)

Hi willco,

Yes, yoshio the GOTO importer does was using acourate with cmp/clay and I believe will continue doing so when gets his new goto setup. I've seen him play around with it and it certainly looks like he knows what he is doing....also, Ming su the goto distributor in the US has developed a passive xover which is supposed to be time and phase aligned for a full goto setup using specific driver/cabinets etc.

And Tuyen, it looks awesome!

Tuyen, what driver in the Onken? also, sound?

For my two-way new Altec project, I'm debating over Onken or traditional ported altec box...eg Model 19.

Hi Andrew,

Drivers in the 360 litre onkens are rebuilt Altec 416-8a 15" drivers. Can not comment on sound yet.. hopefully will be able to after the weekend :)

goto_sg-38wnssp.jpg

Will eventually move to GOTO SG-38WNS 15" drivers when my bank balance goes into +ve figures again.

Hi Andrew,

Can comment on the sound now after having hooked it up and listening to music during the bloody hot weekend (my room has no AC!) that just passed.

Bass is deep and strong. Very soft and delicate at the same time. Low notes have good texture and tone. It sonic characteristics arent like typical active subwoofers that that I have experienced in the past. Maybe cause they are designed to play from 30-35hz to 600hz, unlike HT subs that are only designed to play up to around 80hz or so? Either way, work really well with the horns :)

Tuyen

I suspect the sound you're hearing is a combination of the quality/speed of the driver, plus the airiness/volume of the cabinet. The Onken design is a classic because of the large porting.

Who did the build on the drivers? They look a bit like the field coil version that Kilemenjaro offer. You could always consider one of Wolf's drivers vs the expensive GOTO. He uses the GPA 416 then does the conversion.

Hi Andrew,

You are probably right re the onkens. Great design. They get the thumbs up from my dad who has never seen the design before but thinks the bass quality is good!

Don't know the person who did the rebuild on the drivers, but all I know is that it was done by a professional speaker repairer based somewhere in QLD.

To be honest, I'd rather stick to GOTO as I personally have been so mighty impressed with the GOTO compression drivers. They have the most articulate and refined sound I have ever heard(just sounds real!). I've been told by few horn nutters that changing to the GOTO woofer has yielded the biggest improvement in the sound of their system by far (they have tried more drivers then I can think of)... I can only imagine how good the woofer will be!? The initial price may seem a bit high, but I feel if it is a setup I keep for many years (which I plan to!) then it may actually work out more cost effective in the long run.

Do you know anyone who is using the Kilemenjaro drivers? Can't find much stuff about them(even on google!). Kind of like most good quality gear I guess :P

How much are the Goto drivers?

How much are the Goto drivers?

Hi Paul, please pm me if you like to know more.

Cheers,

Yeah, I've been interested in those Kilemenjaro drivers for quite some time, but the lack of info on them from users kept my figure from the buy it now button.

Maybe you should try them first Andrew and tell us how they go :D

I don't have first hand info on the Kilimenjaro drivers....but I would suspect they are outstanding. Firstly, they use brand new Great Plain 416's, then the magic field-coil system is added.

I'll start with GPA 416's first though...and try and promote 'altec'....
