Love a good Aussie sparkling red. This one is one of the best from my favourite Aus winemaker. Ashton Hills 19984be24207d6c4e91ff40ea90ba0f028eb.jpg

  • Coopers Sparkling Ale for me

  • And being a bit of a Coopers historian, I can say that a version of Sparkling Ale was the first beer that Thomas Cooper brewed, however it wasn't very similar.. different malt, different hops, differe

  • Trying it for the first time tonight, watching the footy (muted) while playing some vinyl. Very nice.... I'll be drinking it again.

A pricey drink?

Current vintage on sale is 2008 and is $40 a bottle from the winery.

Moving back from the sparkling red to this lovely Riesling. Leo Buring Eden Valley Riesling 2008. Lemon curd in a glass. Pizza and working our way through both Woodstock albums.

Fruit Sourcing Rutherglen

Harvest Date March 2013

Vintage The lead up to vintage 2013 was promising, with dry conditions throughout the growing season.  January 2013 saw temperatures soar, causing sugar levels to rise rapidly, and a return to an early February start for vintage.  Reds particularly ripened early, and we actually commenced vintage with our 2013 Carlyle Vineyard Shiraz (the first time a red has been the first variety harvested at Pfeiffer Wines).

Unlike the 2011 and 2012 seasons, there were minimal rain events throughout the 2013 vintage, allowing for a steady receival of fruit and less pressure in the winery.  The dry autumn also allowed full maturation of our fortified varieties, with Muscadelle for Topaque being picked at the end of April.  Overall, quality is high, particularly in the red and fortified varieties, with the wines showing great colour, ripe fruit flavours and good length of flavour.

Winemakers Comments The 2013 Pfeiffer Durif is sourced from a single vineyard on the north eastern side of Rutherglen.  The fruit was given a cold maceration for 4 days prior to fermentation on skins at temperatures of 20-25°C for 12 days.  During fermentation it was pumped over twice daily for short periods of time to avoid over extraction.  At the end of fermentation the wine was pressed into new American oak hogsheads and a stainless steel tank to undergo malolactic fermentation.

The 2013 Pfeiffer Durif was matured in a combination of French and American oak of various size and age for approximately 18 months.  The wine was then blended, fined and clarified prior to bottling in December 2014.

Our 2013 Durif is an inky, dark purple colour.    The nose exhibits ripe plum and blackberry fruit, with a touch of spice.  A rich and powerful wine, the palate is full of dark fruit and chocolate flavours that persist to a long tannin finish. - See more at: https://www.pfeifferwinesrutherglen.com.au/home/shop/wines/red-wines/2012-pfeiffer-durif-105-detail#sthash.klDTbAUS.dpuf

Feeling a tad vague Luc.

Too good to drink? No!

White Rabbit, a light tasting beer without the hops bitterness. Great for middle-of-the-day drinking. Do't you just love the colour?

I think my local Dans finally has Return Of The Dredd, will check it out this arvo.

had a nice Kozel dark last night, luvvem. had another type of Euro wheat beer, which only re-confirmed my dislike for that style. just a weird aftertaste, IMO.

Hi

An interesting one, purchased half a dozen last week and for me I find them, as Monty Python would say, 'Like having sex in a Canoe', I prefer the Hook Norton, 12 Days, but again a personal taste.

The Kluckster put me onto that and yeah Janjuc, our tastes must be virtually positive/negative versions of each other. :D

it didn't do a lot for me. Of course we don't want to die wondering. :)

Just picked up some part-time hours with Dan Murphy's..............so i guess that means i will have to sample a few here and there to keep my customer knowledge up to speed!

I noticed a ROTD display in DMs yesterday.

Sent from eyefone.

After 3 weeks in Sicily and Umbria we had to get a dose of Italy. Just saw two incredible plays at the Belvoir, The Dog/The Cat and then on to the best Italian wine bar in Sydney, 121 BC3b8dcd8985b09a7c9c06f83d28a8471b.jpg. Managed to enjoy these two great wines

I thought we just don't want to die. Wondering or not doesn't come into it. @@Janjuc, you might want to try the Hook Norton Old Hooky and Theakston's Old Peculiar too. And the White Rabbit as mentioned by @@mwhouston.

Hi

Have a new quaffer from Dan Murphy,

329639_0_9999_med_v1_m56577569855079224.It has a bright, clear deep ruby colour, good depth of flavour,  and a fuller flavour and more depth the next day after opening.

Hi

I am tending to drink more ales, trappist and highly hopped beers lately, have tasted some excellent experimental beers from one of the local brewers that my son is working at, they may become available or maybe not.

I find VB, Carlton Draft and virtually most of the generic beers available to be quite thin and lacking flavour, this may be due to 50 years of beer drinking and seeing flavour diminish during the 80's and 90's and the rejuvination of craft beers and ales from the mid - late 90's....

JJ

Scored today; for $12 Yalumba Y series Merlot. So what you say? Well a 2011 I say. I had them turn the store inside out for one more but settled for. 2013.

It was smooth and mellow.

  • 3 weeks later...

Home made American whiskey for me (corn whiskey in this case).

Some on French oak just to mix it up a little, some on American oak.

Dont mind a "Fat Yak" now and then, probably CUB's finest brew (Matilda Bay is owned by CUB). "Lazy Yak" is ok, but its just a commercialised clone of the original that the marketing guru's got their hands on. Like Vic and Melbourne bitter, they cant resist messing with the recipe. Same thing with a different label

Funny, no ones put up a link to "west end" lol

I use to enjoy Fat Yak but overtime went off it. Enjoying Hawthorn at the local now.

But this red was real nice. Also in a cab. say.
