I havnt drank since the late 80's and have never actually been drunk in my life.

As as far as weight is concerned, I'm at an nearly all time low, 67kg.

It boils down to the simple fact I don't eat much. Bowl of mixed cereal for breakfast, nothing more than a sandwich sized lunch and a regular Dinner. That's it.

I think one of my legs weighs 67kgs.

Heading out to look for an exercise bike, gotta a feeling I'm damaging my already knackered knees with all this walking/shuffle/jogging.Going to go and do a road run/walk just to see how bad they get if at all, been two days since the last one.(10ks on tready). Now doing pre run exercises to try and build some muscle tone around knee...not easy.

Sit in chair straight back and lift and straighten one leg and rotate toes outward and pointed back towards you...hold for 15 seconds then swap feet, repeat 3 times. Sounds easy doesn't it.  Try it, it aint.thigh-contraction.jpg

Straight leg raises â€“ 3 sets of 10 reps with each leg
straight-leg-raises.jpg

Sit up straight on a chair. Straighten and raise your right leg until straight, with your foot pointing slightly outwards. Keeping your leg raised, move your leg up and down while maintaining the contraction in the teardrop muscle. Repeat with the other leg.

Tip: for more of a challenge, perform with an ankle weight

ITB (iliotibial band) â€“ 3 sets of 15 seconds with each leg
ITB-stretch.jpg

To stretch your right ITB, cross your right leg behind your left leg. Keeping both feet on the ground, lean to your left side and push you right hip outwards. Don’t bend forwards or stick your buttocks out. You should feel the stretch along your outer right thigh and hip.

Tip: lean forwards onto a table to help with balance, or to increase the stretch

and this thing is farking hard...

Buttock stretch â€“ hold for 15 seconds
buttock-stretch.jpg

Lie on your back with your knees bent and both feet flat on the floor. Cross your right leg over your left thigh. Grasp the back of your left thigh with both hands and pull the left leg toward your chest. Repeat with the other leg.

luc warning ! treadies are terrible things …though have old injuries I can run no problem…on the treadie on the gym for even 5-10min and am all sore with the old injuries…I honestly think its a completely different running action the tready. I don't think its good for knees, ankles, hip etc :)

You are going pretty hard too Lee, I have ordinary knees from screeding concrete for years and had to gradually lengthen the run-wheeze-walk distances. Dunno if it would help to go for shorter runs and build up slowly? Just thinking out aloud.

how do you check :D

ps the stretching is very good thing your doing though..I want to pull out my "core exercise sheet" was all stretching and amazingly good at heaving the lard :)

I do a lot of stretching as it keeps my ciatica at bay, I do a lot of sitting-hammy stretches and yoga stuff (the plough, the cobra etc) for the spine. It's great stuff.

If I don't do it for a few days, the ciatica starts creeeeping baaaack.

Daz, I started this 'turn my life around thing' on Feb 19 and I was on the tready only each day for 40m and then in the pool for half hour(love the pool) and I was doing 4ks in 40 minutes and I've increased each day  deliberately but not by too much until i now do 5.3-5.5ks in my 40 minutes so I've not rushed into it but then I started to continue on the tready past my 40 minutes and lately I've started doing 10k's which takes me 77 minutes last time.

I've done 6 road walk runs and I keep increasing them each time and I feel great after them but I'm being careful now haven't run since Sat but it's a beaut 27c no wind north coast kinda day today and I've got no work on so I reckon it's time to test the knees again and see if I pull up sore or pull up ok. And i'll be doing all the above exercise before and after too.

Knees stay sore...then it's off to the doc. I snapped something in both knees about 15 years  and 5 years ago and I can't squat for instance or twist on them but...I seem to be able to walk/jog on them at the moment.

Everything I read though says I should be looking at a bike and water running. 4K to put a heat pump in the pool and that might be worth the expense but of course there go my Diamonds yet again  , I'll be down to Usher 520's soon ffs.

Sciatica is a bitc.h isn't it, I don't get it much luckily. Missus reckons I should do yogurt as she enjoys it(but not when I call it yogurt...) but I've tried a couple of postures and my knees wont let me hold them.

If I got into this position then I'm guessing I'm dead coz that's the only way they could drag my legs over my head..plough-pose-step6.gif

NO WAY!plough-pose-step4.gif

See, I've injured both knees with years of tennis on hardcourts but I could still run on a treadmill... until I tried running on a gravel running track and ruptured my meniscus and strained the medial ligament 2 years ago. Now anything more than a jog across the road leaves me with a sore knee for 2/3 days but I could ride my bike without discomfort within a week of injuring myself. I have decide whether or not to go under the knife so I can play footy/soccer/tennis with my girls.

@@Luc , get that ITB stretch down pat, you are going to need it if you start riding a lot. It usually passes as the body becomes accustom to riding but ITB knee pain is quite common as you up the training load.

see that only reenforces for me that treadmills are a different running action to running/jogging :)

we must have complementary injuries…I can run/jog anywhere but can't handle a treadmill where as your the opposite !

its so interesting though that bike riding seems fine for knee injuries…intact am sure its what strengthened my knees enough to walk/jog/run :)

Definitely agree.

I love walking /running now and regularly do 8-10KMs, but our treadmill is an item of fear and loathing for me, but others in the house do use it so it stays despite being ugly and taking up space.

Still, whatever works for everyone is good. The results are the important bit :)

I would steer well clear of Treadmills, we have one that come out of a gym, quite good quality. It is the worst thing for sore legs, back, etc.

The running action just isn't natural, too much strain I think.

Cheers Dave.

yep thats what I find :)

Well I find mine just fine. I have it set on an incline and I plug my ph into it, set my weight and start and I find it's easier on my knees in particular and I tend to get better cardio than on the road runs although todays walk/shuffle has gone 14.3ks over a very very hilly course so much so there is only about 1.5 k's that isn't on some kinda slope and some are steep.

Did a recovery session in my very cold pool and some further exercise and now I need to go to the on the grog thread coz I've got a Vintage Coopers in my mitt...

Weigh in has me at 98.4, I think I'm entering another of those phases where you drop a little bit more weight before you kinda hover.

@rantan  I'm guessing you had to buy a whole new wardrobe RT. I just went to Coles to buy some lentils and some Atta flour and all my board shorts are falling off me :(  That's a real downside of slimming is the need for new clothes.

You bet.

It's funny how little things make a difference, like now that I can actually wear regular jeans, with a leather belt and shorts that don't have an elastic waist band. An older but fav suede jacket that I couldn't wear is now in regular use once more and T shirts have gone from 4XL to medium. One thing that was really surprising is that a hat I used to wear in summer is now way too big and I can get two fingers between my head and the edge of the hat.

A smaller head FFS

Fingers are more defined, legs and thighs half the thickness and the list goes on...................

Sometimes I just still do not believe it but I am heading for 72KG and goal weight, only 4KG to go, what a journey!

Baggy clothes are par for the course with large scale weight loss. I still have a few things from previous drops but not much so at some point it will be necessary to start buying new stuff. Happily, with winter fast approaching, a multitude of sins can be hidden with the addition of a pullover or a jacket. Thermal insulation is a by-product of baggy duds as well. Haven't tried any of my hats recently @@rantan but I have sometimes had the same effect from a good haircut.

Haha...I used to love Yoga, and can still sit in a Lotus position no problem.
