Last night I watched "50/50", a surprisingly good comedy.....more a romantic dramedy. Great cast and loosely based on actual events. I enjoyed it a lot.

Last night I watched "Get Th Gringo" on bluray. Fantastically enjoyable movie. Gibson, in fact the whole cast, in fine form here.

Last night I watched "Sorcerer" on bluray. What a fantastic movie this was.....and you can see why it would have been a challenge to make.

The cable bridge crossing scene alone is worth the ticket price!

"The Wages of Fear" was an excellent movie from sometime in the 50s or 60s, I don't have the details. That one was pretty good. I see this is based on the same novel (I didn't know it was a novel). I can imagine it being pretty good. Thanks for the tip!

Cheers,

Alberto

Yes, I became aware of that original French movie while researching 'Sorcerer'.....and also found out that there was a French Netflix remake of it done in 2024.

'Sorcerer' was unfortunately a box office bomb when it came out in 1977. It was a victim of coming up against movies like Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Saturday Night Fever.....coupled with its title and the fact that Friedkin's previous film was The Exorcist, people were expecting a supernatural horror.....so word of mouth assessments of it conveyed disappointment but it has been critically hailed as an underappreciated classic since. There has been documentaries done on just how hard it was to make.....a bit like Apocalypse Now. I am trying to track these down. So yes, Sorcerer is definitely worth a look.

Last night it was back to fantasy with "The House With A Clock In It's Walls" on bluray. Good fun movie, Black was very good but Blanchett is just a treat in everything she's in.

Last night I watched "The Family" on bluray. Mildy entertaining Luc Besson mob comedy.

Last night I watched "Bad Neighbours" on bluray. Mmmm.....funny in parts but inconsistent with a strange unconvincing chemistry between Seth and Rose. Some covers for this say 'funniest movie of the year'.....that is was not.

Last night I watched "Paul" on bluray. I have always enjoyed Pegg and Frost movies and this was no exception. Good cast and lots of fun.

Last night I watched "War Horse" on bluray. A fine movie indeed which had me tearing up on numerous occasions. A harrowingly beautiful story, superbly filmed and acted.....and the horses were truly majestic, particularly 'Joey'.

Last night I watched "Colette" on bluray. Really enjoyed this.....a fine factual period drama. Fine performances from the entire cast.

Last night I watched "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" on bluray. Pretty good, not quite up there with the first one but ok. Tainted somewhat by the fairly regular presence of that toxic FoxNews Trumper moron Maria Bartiromo.

Last night I watched "Bad Neighbours 2" on bluray. I actually thought this was as good if not better than the first one, quite funny at times.....and at least the chemistry between Seth and Roses characters seemed more natural this time around.

I borrowed some blu-ray movies from my council library yesterday. Played Death Of A Unicorn last night. A debut film from a new director, released in 2025.

81x9ouYdMoL._AC_SX679_.jpg

Basic plot is about a father with his daughter driving to a weekend retreat owned by his extremely wealthy boss (played by Richard E Grant.)

They have an accident on the way and run over a unicorn! The unicorn is not quite dead though so the father tries to kill it using the car's tyre brace.

They load the unicorn into the back of the car and eventually arrive at his boss's place, which is where the 'fun' begins. (potential plot spoiler, the unicorn is still not quite dead yet.). You can probably guess the sort of thing that is likely to happen from here on.

This film is a bit bizarre. Wikipedia describes it as a dark fantasy comedy horror film, which is only partly accurate, as I think it is a bit light on the comedy side (unless you find the idea of being attacked by unicorns funny). Do take note of the MA 15+ warning on the front cover. This is not a film for very young children.

There are some very gruesome scenes in this movie. I also think there is a bit of an influence from Jurassic Park with the part of the T Rex being taken over by a group of very angry unicorns (to me the sounds made by the unicorns seemed very similar to the T. Rex in J. Park).

I borrowed this film mainly out of curiosity. I don't think it is a great movie, but it does have some entertainment value, and I did enjoy watching it up to a point (gory scenes notwithstanding). I think they could have done a bit more with this film though. Doubt that I will watch it a second time. Worth borrowing from your local library, but just be careful if you have young children. This is not a child friendly movie!

Last night I watched "Erin Brokovich" on bluray. Have seen it before but many years ago. Great film.....Roberts, Finney and Eckhart are fantastic.
