And for those who aren't familiar with Toni Basil's (1981) "Mickey" that's quoted in the cartoon:

Never mind the decreasing volume. The biggest change we should worry about is what's in the trolley.

There's no way the trolley would have looked like that in 1980 - there's way too much processed / packaged food. Most of it would have been fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy and a few pantry staples.

That's because the consumer would have had a real choice back in 1980, with known trusted brands.

Now those brands have been either pushed off the shelves, and into oblivion, or swallowed up and ruined by either large multinationals, or even worse Coles or Woolworths to become on of their Home Brands.

Once in their hands ingredients are changed / substituted and cheapened, as well as the serving made smaller, but costing more, and the manufacturing has been moved to China, which has a abysmal record when it comes to food substitution with god knows what.

I look on the labels of what few packaged foods I buy, if it has Made in China, or Processed in China, I won't touch it.

Same goes when buying Seafood, I always check where it has come from........They pump seafood full of water for a start, so when its frozen it has upped the weight, and when defrosted has absolutely no flavor as that's disappeared with the water.

Sorry for the rant, but I and many family members and friends have worked in the food production, or handling of food, and its a travesty what the supermarkets have been allowed to get away with.

Let's not forget that $1 in 1980 is now $8.985 through inflation alone. So the $20 note pictured will be worth $179.70 in today's money or, if you prefer the other way around, that $20 is now worth $2.22. The 2026 basket looks about right for $2.22.

I'm alarmed at the addition of milk solids in butter and milk.
