From an exhibitor's perspective, this was the best show out of the 4 we have done so far. More sales, more follow up's required and more buzz. Less people obviously but got to engage more rather than just play dj. I have a full day ahead of just replying to email enquires so that can't be too bad.

From my point of view it was the best one I've been to. Smaller crowds meant that I was able to listen to more rooms more carefully than in previous shows.

I'm glad that it was good for you too @@guru and I hope it was good for the other exhibitors too.

That would be a win win

At risk of being crucified:

I went primarily to indulge my AV/HT Multi-channel interests ... I found this sort of gear to be an afterthought at this show with 90% of it aimed at stereo gear/listening and much of that was turntable and headfi.  That was fine and interesting, but I think they should stop calling it the AV and HiFi show and just make it the HiFi show to save disappointment from the mainstream who go to see Home Theater setups (of which there was bugga all).

With the exception of Epson's Laser Projector (In a room full of ambient light, so it was impossible to tell how good it actually was) there wasn't really anything remarkable from a HT perspective ... I had to laugh at Sony having two of its flagship projectors sitting on a bench as a static display, covered in dust - what a joke!

I agree with @@Chopsus, at least when I went last year, it was the same. And I could say the same for multi-channel audio: non-existent representation in 2013. Same this time?

It's as if the word 'Stereo' has gotten so embedded into the heads of audiophiles and industry together, that they limit themselves from taking the next obvious step forward -- but they will have to do it without the beloved LP (hah! there's the reason).

'Stereo'phile, anyone? 'Stereo'NET?

OT, that "next obvious step" (no doubt your beloved multi-channel :), for some may not be forward (ie an improvement).  Back to topic & here's hoping next year's in Sydney!!

PS  thanks to all who posted pics (in the various places) & comments.

Next years event in sydney will be quite different as from all conversations had , it won't be in a hotel and the sentiment will be for a broad spectrum home entertainment based show including gaming, service providers, multi format and more from the mainstream manufacturers of which hotel based shows have limited appeal so the 2 channel specialists might be the ones finding it a challenge. Reinvention keeps it fresh and maybe sydney will become multi purpose and melbourne audio orientated which would probably quite sensible as that's what the markets for each city seem to support.

Purely on a personal level I like it the way it is but I do understand the disappointment of anyone who attended thinking there would be a goodly amount of AV/HT gear. The name is obviously not representative of what is on show.

The name of the show does not reflect what it has been previously no. The companies and brands absent from both this year predominantly, but also last year make the show essentially what it is.

The number one factor for that repeated over and over again to me is the prohibitive cost of participation as an exhibitor. Hopefully that feedback has been taken on board. It certainly stopped many coming back this year around (return vs investment etc).

The market is hurting right now - and to think that the exhibiting fees are actually higher than the New York Audio Show ... (so I'm told).

Yes it seems as though the cost of doing business in this country is pretty over the top. For example why is parking at Melbourne Airport so outrageously expensive compared to nearly everywhere else in the world?

Gee I hope the two concepts do separate and Steak+Kidney gets the HT/AV mob and Bleak City gets the 2 channel mob as I could just pencil Melbourne in every Oct for fun/boots/beer/Evil stuff+salami...what's not to like about that?

Might even get to see(let alone listen) to @@djb 's system which I think is actually up there with Sir Thomas More's creation and it doesn't actually exist unless you take instruction on the idea

Some random thoughts about the show.

It was less crowded and had fewer exhibitors (and more women!). Personally I liked that, I had more of a chance to listen for longer and was less exhausted by the end of the two days I visited. I just hope that it was also successful for those who plonked down their hard earned (and lots of it) in order to exhibit.

Highlights for me were: Kyron, German Physiks room (I didn't know there would be a Caliburn....really nice surprise) and Bill Mcleans room. It was only afterwards that I noticed the theme. "Non-box" speakers of course. I reckon the Kyron system is astounding value. It beat systems I've heard that cost multiples of what it does and beat them hands down (IMHO, YMMV, GLWTS, LOL etc etc). Having said that, the Maggies in Bills Room have to be the outstanding bargain of the show. Also the music was for me, the most interesting and although Bill assures me he played some Diana Krell, I didn't hear anything even remotely as dull as that when I was in that room :)

More random thoughts that I'm too lazy to flesh out

  • I thought the Raidhos were disappointing. To me, their top end is astounding but it didn't seem to gel properly with the bass driver
  • The McIntosh + Sonus Faber needed to be in a proper room. It had some real promise but let down by the way they were displayed.
  • Richter - amazing value
  • Legend - very impressive
  • Where was Wilson ?
  • Pure Music - great room great music
  • Involve Audio - interesting idea but did you really have to play "Money" four hundred times?
  • What were those ridiculous 'water and light' speaker things in the headphone area?
  • I loved the headphone area. Well done to Addicted to Audio - I was really blown away by the gear they showed

It was great to catch up with so many SNAers. I suspect the event would have been a complete flop without SNA - I hope the organisers thank you @@Marc 'cos they did a pretty p*ss poor job of advertising it

I'm a little surprised Greg Osborn didn't recognise Michael Fremmer..............he certainly had some good things to say about Osborn speakers though.

Cheers,

Keith

Well that goes very well for him :), i've heard the AM at his place, pretty impressive indeed!

When I entered the room and sat down I asked Mr. Osborn if I might play a few requests. He told me that wouldn't be possible because he was expecting at any moment the "editor and chief of Stereophile". I told him I think he was expecting me and that I was a senior contributing editor not editor in chief. He said he was expecting an entrance with greater fanfare. I told him I'm not the type to blow my own horn.

Then why mention it at all Mr Fremer?

Seems Fremer is just sharing a funny story/moment and not really blowing his own horn?

Maybe it's just BS? :D

I didn't speak to him myself [Fremer], but what I saw and heard from him made me think he wasn't the type that was up himself at all, and a few others here have pretty much expressed the same sentiment.

Cheers,

Keith

Because he can...& probably because it was funny in that situation...

I spoke to Greg on email very late on Sunday night - he mentioned it to me: "The initial meeting was a little embarrassing, as I mistook him for a bloke who had been in a dozen times. " :)

Funny incident. That's all there is to it.

If you look at the pictures posted in this thread (esp the ones with backs towards the frame)... IMO the majority of the crowd seems to dressed somewhat alike and have the same look?

Funny in a way, but somewhat weird OTOH as audiophiles have a "cloned look"???
