The power of the POD

Featured Replies

I agree with gregwormald, let her buy one.

And she can drink it if she likes, ass long as you can keep yours.

You just drink it your way, which is the right way, and she can have it her way.

  • We were tempted by the pod, even had a fancy pants machine here for a week or so. Quite a nice looking unit too, auto milk frother, real easy to clean, all the bells and whistles. The coffee it mad

  • Let her buy one. Keep the Silvia. It's a good excuse for a man-cave.   Greg It's a shame she doesn't like coffee.

  • I blame @@Super Mustud high cultist of the podz

wife comes back from work yesterday saying something about how they got a pod machine and it is quicker and easier to use …and heavens the ultimate insult - she says it makes coffee better than I do with the rancho silvia

She's just trying to hurt your feelings, you've obviously done something to upset her

I'm actually starting to wonder if she was actually hinting that I should buy her one of these things ! :D

If you want to move the Silvia on... I'm looking for a machine for our van ;-)

Ps; Aldi pods are better than Nespresso IMHO

Exactly.

Not worth fighting over.

I find it to be the best approach

For years I made espresso with a manual machine. Carefully chose the beans, timed my shots to tenth of seconds, obsessed over grind fineness and spent so much tome on all that I gave up drinking espresso. In that time Nespresso had improved trheir customer service and machines to a great extent and local coffee roasters started making their own espresso capsules for Nespresso machines.

So now the nice people at the Nespresso centre make me my lunchtime coffees for free (you don't need to be a Nespresso owner or club member or buy anything) and my favourite local roaster sells capsules much cheaper than Nespresso which are far fresher. All with a $200 machine that is 100% reliable and only needs 20 seconds to warm up.

You'll recognize the position above as equivalent to "why I switched to CDs from records" so my advice would be the same as for that case - why not have both?

NB: I only drink short blacks. Two capsules on the ristretto setting using a U machine. YMMV

Cheers

That's genius. Convenience and relative quality. I'm gonna have to look into it.

Nah, just a clip around the ear'ole

Hi Im mello, ... and Im a podaholic

my story,

Im strictly (well was) a percolated coffee drinker, small two cup stainless steel peculator and only have my coffee short, sweet and black preferring to stay close to my roots and avoid the elaborate snobmachines. Pure and natural straight from a stove top to the cup, anyway, before i lost proper function of my liver i used to love to add a drop or two ( or three ) of various bourbons or whiskeys into the mix for added sweetness and flavour, however i am now on medical advice to avoid all intoxicants. I am slowly adjusting to the taste of coffee without the whiskey but its tolerable

i first heard about George and his Fantastic Flying Pod Machine a few years back and was interested in the fact that each pod is sealed fresh until it was pierced by the machine, however being from a working class neighbourhood the closest we get to anything like Nespresso Coffee Lounges or inner city fancy metrosexual Clubs is bingo night at the local RSL, so a steady supply of pods was not something that was going to happen naturally. The whole idea was shelved, until...

until,... ALDI broke into the market with their rather cheap machine and a reliable supply of pods at a more than reasonable price. No George Clooney within cooee, no velvet velour reclining seats, no tight skirted business females indulging in an elicit lesbian affair over a quick lunchtime coffee (sorry just a fantasy diversion there)  nothing fancy like that at all, no, just a machine and a pod, ... a poor mans cheap pod aimed fairly and squarely at ordinary everyday suburban pod coffee novices. They say one pod and youre hooked, well its true. I was seduced by its speed, aroma and the frothy creme that no peculator could give. I became accustomed to the creamy taste to the point it becomes second nature now. Load, lock, drop the plunger, gently squeeze the button and fire. 10 seconds later its ready

al, may the POD be with you

"lock and load"

yep this is preparing for battle.

aldi pod, george clooney pod...theyre all just pods by another name as far as am concerned.

have no idea really what pod is coming.

perhaps this is all just some cruel joke. and she never actually intends to get a pod machine and just wants to see me squirm at the suggestion !

maybe she is getting you one of those new ones from Apple, an iPod

Someone at my old work bought an Aldi machine into the office. The coffee it made tasted like someone sat in a puddle and farted

I bet if they used that as a slogan it would sell.

did he say he brought in it especially for you :P

some of them are described as "nutty" with a bitter aftertaste, i avoid those ones

Edited by mello yello II

I bought into the pod club at work with no prior experience. I found it does a nice espresso but I can't get a decent flat white out of it, too weak! And this from a man who has never owned a coffee machine!

No, but I think he was hoping I'd contribute to its cost (I didn't)

I did however manage to organise a little Breville espresso machine for the office, the Aldi pod machine went into the cupboard shortly after and stayed there ever since

did you try a double blind test ?

Drink enough Expressi and you'll go blind
