one of the best in Sydney is a little pie shop, half way between Engadine and Woronora Heights.

that has to be in those shops on the roundabout straight up from the highway ?

It's about 200 metres diagonally across the road just past the lights. They're tucked in behind a street front shop but damn that place was always and still is busy. When I called in it was about 3.00

There's a little group of shops, pie shop, Newsy, hair dresser.........not much more.

Bing! Google maps!

Problem is.............I only get down that section of Engadine once or twice a year!

It might have changed hands by now.

Willow, did he stink of Lynx deodorant?

Unfortunately fame has brought them undone , hc - The pies can have a tendency to be big and pale and anaemic looking , like Gwenneth Paltrow ; but infinitely more serious is their encouragement of the use of little plastic utensils to eat their pies.

Warning : rant ahead.

This, in my humble but usually well-informed opinion,  is sending the wrong message to a whole new generation of pie-eaters. Being based on the major arterial highway , Yatala also attracts interstate visitors from up and down the eastern seaboard. This reflects poorly on Queensland in general...that we should let this sort of shenanigans go unchecked is a tacit endorsement of what we - that's you and I , dear readers - have conclusively shown to be un-Australian behaviour. It's simply not on.

And if you think I'm joking , take a look at the following photo , which I am calling 'Australia's Shame'. This rooster is a young tradie (note the King Gee longs and steel caps) eating a pie with a plastic fork , whilst on the phone to his girlfriend Cheryl with a bottle of water (not a chocky milk) in front of him.

This bloke is surely the Michael Clarke of tradies. And I'm not talking about the 300-plus run-scoring machine of late ; I'm talking about the bloke who doesn't want to sing Under the Southern Cross I Stand because his girlfriend is waiting outside the dressing room with a bottle of Cristal and a pocketful of pingers.

Bruce Ruxton would roll over in his grave if he could see this. Sam Kekovich would have another heart attack. It's disgraceful. This kid needs some serious time in the room of mirrors. No wonder he’s eating alone  .........and breathe

Willow's recommendation is a little bakery just out of Ipswich - Mrs K's Place , just off the Cunningham Hwy Yamanto , one hand pies FTW.

Even I (someone who migrated to this fine land in his 20s) knows the proper way to eat a pie -  first take a bite out the thing and then slowly suck out the delicious gravy till there is no more (this is that you don't get the gravy all over your clothes). Only then do you consume the rest of the pie. No plastic utensils necessary.   :)

BBB is way overrated and over priced.

Yes, Oatley are good but one of the best in Sydney is a little pie shop, half way between Engadine and Woronora Heights.

Otherwise, Sefton is great.............closely followed by Ermington which has the best value pie in Sydney.

Harry's aren't the same as in the old days.

Where in Ermington - at the shops next to Woolies and the Pub? There is not too far from me.

a good pie shop can be the focal point of an out of town weekend run (car or bike), and some pretty good ones on this A List.

that one is nearby, sounds good and will be well worth a look Sir T, some nice twisty roads on that run

anyone finding themselves on the open road down south there's Kangaroo Valley Pie Shop in the township on Moss Vale Rd with quite a claim to fame that isnt far off the mark with some brilliant country atmosphere on the verandah...dont know what the new owners have done but hopefully they followed the recipe

some of the roads require special care during winter months,

I had a pie there a couple of years. It was not bad, but still not a patch on the Creme dela Creme ones though.

Yes some very nice roads there.

@@Willow

That guy deserves a slap!

Unless you can eat a pie with one hand while steering your ute with the other, you're not a tradie ;)

Preferably with dirty hands and a bottle of drink between the legs.

Yeah...........next to the Post Office.

Asian bakery................does a good pork roll too.

Anyway..................not the best pie in town..............but not bad either........... a good size for not much cash.

I like the tomato and onion or the curry...........occasionally a plain.

I agree with Willow. This world seems to be going too metro sexual (girly) for my liking. Gone are the days of dragging your girlfriend into Yatala pies by the hair caveman style, buying your pie and milk, eating without cutlery, then grabbing a handful of your girls ass or boobs  before going home for a bonk.

Seriously though. Yatala pies used to be excellent before they moved to their new premises a few hundred metres down the road and became commercialised. Along with the commercialisation and the need for greater profits the pies suffered a horrible fate.

Best pies I've ever had are from the Stone Hut Bakery, near Wirrabara in SA.  (Good place to call in on the way back from the Flinders Ranges.)

Just went looking for their website, and it looks like they've closed. Damn! :(

What did they put in them before Viagra?

What did they put in them before Viagra?

Is that some new kind of rising agent they use instead?

I've loved pies since I was a kid with my childhood favourite being Aussie Pies.

Now though whenever I'm on a road trip I like to try small town bakeries with a recent favourite being Akehurst Bakery in Blayney, about 20ks south of Bathurst, NSW.

I also 2nd Bourke Street Bakery in Surry Hills, their brisket pie is sensational.

While they're not the best I find it hard to beat a Villi's at the footy, particularly after a few mid strength beers.

I should also lob in a mention for the Sundance Bakery at Nugget's Crossing, Jindabyne.

Parker Pies at Rutherglen are pretty good.  I usually drop in when crossing the border at Albury-Wodonga.

Best Pies I have had were from a cart in the middle of Lismore City.

Delicious :)

I met the beast before hand in order to build a disliking for the individual...........makes it OK, and tasty :)

Thirty years ago the Derby Bakery, in Derby of course, did a great meat pie, especially at about 2am, fresh out of the oven, when your thirst had turned to hunger. The major problem was that sometimes, if he wasn't careful, the baker could easily sell his entire night's production to half a dozen drunks in one fell swoop which would leave none for the shops and takeaway businesses that were his clients. After doing that a couple of times he rationed them. Damn, they were good.

Have to admit to liking the basic Mrs Mac's these days, out of the oven not the microwave. Not that I partake too often nowadays.

As a Qlder I love a good pie and peas, but I believe that most Mexicans don't have them the way we do? That is, the cut sliced open and the peas spooned into the top at time of sale.

The best pie I ever had was from a pie van (I don't see them outside of Qld either), but there have been so many over the years. So many pie vans, so many pies.

A pie out of a Microwave?  Quelle Horreur

I have fond pie memories of a town on the way to Bendigo. Pie shop on the left side of the road. Can't remember the name, but will look for it next time we go that way.

......that would be MALMSBURY then. Fantastic pies, and blueberry muffins chocka with the actual berries.

MMMMMMMM , forbidden muffin...............

ZM.

We need a separate blueberry muffin thread.....

+1

We stopped in there for a pie and a coffee about 47,634 years ago - prolly had different owners back then but they sure didn't whack 'em in a microwave.

When I was living at Snives in Sydney about 25 years ago we used to lob into the French patisserie shop at Turramurra to score some of their famous choux pastry and coffee custard filled eclair type thingys. Well bugger me dead, I dropped in their last March / April while visiting my family / band mates and found the same shop had re-opened some time later in a newly developed arcade type of building and naturally had to savor the wares again.

These bad boys were so nice if you had too many at once you'd develop a serious case of orgasm de osculum

Edited by progladyte

How far from Turramurra Music is that?
