Buying a microwave

Featured Replies

This morning as I made my breakfast I thought "we've had this microwave a long time now, it's served us well".  At which point I kid you not it beeped and I pulled my breakfast out of it and everything was still cold.  Repeated testing has shown that the turntable rotates, the light goes on, but the zappers have zapped their last.

It's a Sharp Carousel bought in 2001.  I'll happily buy another Sharp or a Panasonic.

I remember when we bought this one.  The conversation went something like this, at a shop that no longer exists:

"We're interested in buying a 800 watt microwave.  Ours has just died."

"You've come to the right place, sir.  What's more, we can offer you something much better than your old 800 watt one, here's the new 950 watt models. They're much better!"

"Surely it's just thermal intensity?"

"Well yes, and they cook your meal much faster!"

"But I use the Medium and Medium-High settings for a reason, so I don't get pockets of heat.  Unevenly cooked food is not a good thing."

"These give you that option, of course."

"Also, the maths from 800 watts to 950 watts is a bit much for me at the end of a long day.  I'll have to adjust the tiimings in all my recipes and my recipe books won't work.  That's why I want a 800 watts microwave."

"We don't have any."

"That's OK, we were leaving anyway."

We bought our microwave elsewhere.

Looking online now, I see those hard-to-clean stainless steel microwaves are still fashionable.  Some retailers  include turntable size in their online details, most don't (we need 320mm diameter for our dishes).  Some models now use inverters to distribute the microwave radiation which means the dishes don't need to rotate, so all that was old is now new again.  We're up for a minimum $180 so it seems.

Why do I post this?  So the key words watts, turntable and inverter will appear when searching this forum, of course!

Panasonic for sure.....

Truly evil.

Get a Sharp Convection Microwave, superb products.

Sharp seemed to have this market to themselves for a long long time as all the sales people swore by them.

We had one for nearly 15 years but bought a Panasonic last time which has served us for nearly as long.

As John just mentioned, the Sharp convection models are very good.

I'm not sure whether brands like LG or Samsung are as good as they were late to the party with their models so have not generated as much credibility as the other 2. I'm not sure if Samsung have recovered from their bad reputation for service that prevailed some years ago.

I have a Panasonic still going strong after 20 years. Of course this was bought 20 years ago, not today. Like everything else, I'm not sure they're made to last anymore. At least the price of replacement landfill is cheaper.

I stopped using micro wave about 2 years ago, doing fine so far :)

Funny you have postd this, most of my better 1/2 brothers and sisters has never used a microwave, apparently the reckon its not good for ya!  So go figure.....

Your microwave has probably just blown an internal fuse. It's very easily fixed.

Microwaving distorts and deforms the molecules of whatever food or other substance you subject to it. An example of this is blood products.

Blood is normally warmed before being transfused into a person. Now we know that microwaving blood products damages the blood components. In fact, one woman died after receiving a transfusion of microwaved blood in 1991, which resulted in a well-publicized lawsuit.

Blood is a live component for life saving,  didn’t know someone would be that stupid to microwave blood!!!!!!

I need new glasses and less Shiraz, I read this as:  "Building a microwave" and I'm like; WTF? Seriously? Wow, I gotta have me some of this.

I was a bit let down once I read through the posts though... -_-
