It was like someone had lifted a veil from my coffee cup.

Its amazing how much difference they make. Next thing try a naked portafilter, believe it or not the absence of a spout also makes a difference!

Will do Prof. Have been tempted in the past.

Plus they look well cool

They do splatter a bit in the cup though unless your coffee distribution in the basket and tamping are perfect.

I should be fine then...

Are all baskets the same dimensions (dementia??).

Don't make me get the callipers out!

Nope. Afraid you'll need those callipers.

VST baskets, no self respecting Hipster Barista would be seen without one.

With regards to naked portafilters, they were originally designed as training tools so you could inspect the evenness of the pour.

But they actually do make an improvement to the pour and look mega cool.

Basically exactly the same as what I bought only dearer.

Yes they are, but that wouldn't be enough for a hipster.

Where does everyone here get their beans from?

I have a couple of local roasters to try out. Going to give these guys a go on the weekend.

I should start by saying I believe you get about 10% results from the bean and 90% comes from technique.  As long as the beans are fresh and been roasted correctly.

There are heaps of good roasters around, 5 Senses, Clements, Padre...... and probably 30 more. They are all about $14 for 250g.

I have been buying from Gigante coffee (lately the COCO blend), mainly because the retail outlet (where they used to roast) is 100m down the road.  Over the counter I pay $9.50 for 250g of beans.  Online they charge $8.25 for 250g, all of the roasters seem to charge about $7-8 delivery. If you buy 2X250g it's about $24 delivered which is still a good price at $12 per 250g.

I get a coffee that is as good and usually better than any of the counter takeaway accept for a few places.  If you want to try something else I would start with 5 Sense.

Good luck

My dealer has a website here and delivers.

Mine come once a month 2 x 500grm and the I leave it up to the supplier to surprise me every month (and he does) with delivery Steve it works out at $36 a month. I've had some extraordinary beans and some astonishing ones and a tiny amount of average ones.

This months for instance are:

Nicaragua Maragogype superior Microlot-Honey Process.

Region: Matagalpa

Processing: Fully Washed

Varietal: Rasuna

Mellow acidity through to a dark, rich&creamy toffee finish. soft spice, cedar&red currant up front,Hazelnut & cocoa mid palate.

And:Guatemala Plan Del Guayabo Pacamara Fully Washed

Cupping score 88.5. Pulped&fermented in 100% natural water in tanks for up to 2 days&then 100% sun dried giving the coffee a very tropical, very aromatic, fruit like depth with notes of brown sugar&white grape.

Region: New Oriente

Altitude: 1675 MASL

Been with them for two years now and very very happy with the value the service and their principles. Have a squiz>>> Manna Beans

The geek who is a barista and I have been comparing a variety of beans over last 3 months to decide on a quality house blend we can buy by the kilo for everyday drinking

Stated prices per kg is our bargain hunting where possible

The machinery is nothing flash. We use the Sunbeam grinder conical burr all the upper end sunbeams with conical burr have same internals price varies per% of stsinless steel casing and the espresso machine is their cafe series thermo block

All tests done with latte and tightly pressed espressos both double shots

No blind testing or perhaps 50% blind tested.

While we have done comparative tests of all beans we drink a kilo then change over

Results probably only relevant for Melbourne drinkers

1 Wild Timor Coffee organic blend $26 kg

2 Abbotsford Convent Bakery convent blend and single origin $24 kg organic and fair trade house roasted on site

3 Convent blend ground better tasted better than single origin.

Also sell another range but only in 250 g for $7

4 Vittoria arabica 2 kilo for $30 pours a bit faster then the other two but a fine coffee and a bargain at $15 kg

Rated in preferred order

Edit emergencies

5 Piedemontes supermarket "Mels blend $15

832 Aldi house beans $13 kg the cask wine equivalent don't go there

My dealer has a website here and delivers.

Damn. I love dissolve-teaspoon-stuff.

I might get a bag of Colombian Maragogype.

When the old man comes (terrified of my coffee, let alone the Polish Porter I drink after 2pm) I will look him straight in his chemical crazed cane farmer baby boomer eyes and strongly ask-

Would you like a double shot Colombian Maragogype.??

I imagine he would run through my screen door, heading straight for the ute and the old can of dieldrin he has been saving for that special time it's required.

Here in Perth i use Fiorie coffee ....C4 blend :thumb:

I went naked today. I am stunned.

A month ago I was thinking about upgrading the Silvia. She can now stay on indefinitely. The naked portafilter and precision basket have made a difference that was just unimaginable. I will get some sexy pics on the weekend of my new nakedness!

I've been naked for years and never looked back.
